Warrensburg man killed after being struck by a train

One person died in an accident on Dec. 12 in Johnson County on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks at marker 222.5 west of County Road SW 301.

A 2002 GE Union Pacific Train, operated by Michael L. Webb, 44, Lee’s Summit, was westbound. The engineer observed a pedestrian sitting on the tracks and attempted to stop the train, which was unsuccessful.

The pedestrian sitting on the tracks, Joseph M. Johnson, 29, Warrensburg, was pronounced dead at the scene by Johnson County Coroner C.L. Holdren at 10:15 a.m. The body was transported to Sweeny, Phillips and Holdren Funeral Home.

Missouri Highway Patrol Trooper J.T. Langsdale investigated the accident and was assisted by Trooper J.W. Miller, CVETS, Sergeant K.M. Fisher, Sgt. M.P. Fennewald and Union Pacific Railroad Police.

Memorial services will be held 11:00am Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Missouri. Burglaries in Cass County

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating two burglaries that occurred in the area of Rolling Hills Road and the Wheatland Estates area. The burglaries both occurred at approximately 12:15 PM today December 12th. 

The suspect vehicle was described by a witness as a small four door grey car and the suspect was described as a white male.

Scam Artists Busy

BATES COUNTY, Mo With the Holiday season upon us, it has brought out the “Scam Artists” working in full force. They are hacking into people’s e-mails, calling people with bogus information and doing everything in their power to get your personal information.

E-mails you receive from people you don’t know asking for help because they are in trouble and only you can help them is always a scam, don’t be fooled.

If someone calls you on the telephone asking for your personal information, stating something like your utilities may be turned off, or state they are trying to collect a debt, never give your information out over the phone. Once they have your information they can do anything they want with it.

Be aware and always guard your personal information. Make sure what and who you are responding to is the genuine article.

Glen Leroy Board, age 93 of Foster, Missouri died Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler, Missouri. He was born October 20, 1921 to Ervin Parker and Alpha Dale Briscoe in Hume, Missouri.

Glen is survived by three sons, James Board and wife Nancy of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Larry Board and wife Connie of Vichy, Missouri and John Board and wife Donna of Mesa, Arizona; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Board and fiance Jacob Nix, Kelli Board, Lori Robbins and husband George, Ashley Donham and husband Tim and Rebecca Crook and husband Joe; seven great-grandchildren, Allison Crook, Lily Crook, Zachary Donham, Arianna Donham, Avery Nix, Wayne Robbins and Glen Robbins. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Peggy in 1996; and one brother, Ernest Board.

Obituary - Norma Lois Avery

Norma Lois Avery
Norma Lois Avery, age 85, Centerville, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2014. She was born on November 17, 1929 at Ottawa, Kansas the daughter of Chester and Genevieve Andrews Fredricks. She graduated from Ottawa High School. Norma married Billie Joe Bill Avery on July 25, 1948 in Ottawa. Her grandfather Charles Andrews was the officiating clergy. They made their home in Ottawa until 1959, moving to Osawatomie at that point. She worked in several capacities including: Avon Representative, Clerk at Woolworth''s, and in food service at USD 367. In 1979, Norma and Bill moved to Centerville. She was a member of the Northside Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking, collecting antiques, and had a passion for reading. She and Bill worked together taking care of their apple orchard. Norma''s family was the most important thing in her life. She enjoyed attending her children''s school activities, and Grammy continued that tradition when her grandsons came along. The family was very fortunate to take memorable vacations together. Norma was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Bill, daughter, Melissa Maimer and husband Danny, son, Mike Avery and wife Lisa, grandsons Blake Maimer and wife Sarah, Jarod Avery, Tommy Avery, Grant Maimer, and great grandson Barrett Maimer, brother, Chester Fredricks, and a sister Martha Anna Robison. 

Funeral service will be held 10 AM, Friday, December 12, 2014 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. Burial will be in the Osawatomie Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM Thursday at the Mound City Chapel. The family suggests contributions to Linn County Care to Share.
