Speed limit going up in Missouri?

A bill introduced in the Missouri Legislature could mean a higher speed limit on interstate highways. Some drivers say they'd welcome the "need for speed" but others say the increase wouldn't make much of a difference.

Right now the speed limit on interstates and freeways in rural areas is 70 mph. Rep. Mike Kelly, R - Lamar, wants to increase that by 5 mph.

Kelly says most drivers typically do 75 miles an hour anyway. States like Oklahoma and Kansas already allow drivers to cruise along rural interstates at 75 miles an hour or higher and some drivers, including Mitchell Mumkatchy, think Missouri can handle that increase too.

"I do a lot of travel and they're doing 80, 85 anyway," said Mumkatchy.

Kelly introduced a similar bill last year, but wasn't successful. If he's successful this time, Missouri will be one of 13 states that have increased the speed limit since 2005.
