Henry County Sheriffs Office:Arrested for violation of order of protection

According to Sheriff J. Kent Oberkrom, a search warrant was served on Monday, February 23, 2015 at 414 North Maple Street, Calhoun, Missouri. The search warrant was applied for and subsequently issued by the court, after review by the prosecuting attorney that allowed law enforcement to search for the person of Vincent Paul Abell, II and a minor child at that residence.

Earlier, Vincent Paul Abell, II was served an ex-parte order of protection at his residence by Deputy Leonard Kubilus. The order gave custody of a one year old minor child to the mother, who was the petitioner on the order of protection. Mr. Abell, after being served the order of protection, refused to comply with the custody order and subsequently went into his residence, locking the door and failing to respond to several attempts by Deputy Kubilus to open the door and comply with the order.

Subsequently, a search warrant was applied for and issued by the court granting law enforcement to enter the residence and search for the person of Vincent Paul Abell, II and the minor child. While law enforcement officers were preparing to enter the residence, Mr. Abell bolted from a garage and entered the home on the back porch. Major Robert Hills, Cpl. Aaron Brown and Deputy Leonard Kubilus pursued Abell into the residence where he was taken into custody. Another adult in the home was cooperative with law enforcement and surrendered the minor child in accordance with the order of the court. Assisting at the scene was Deputy Brady Graham and Sheriff Kent Oberkrom.

Mr. Abell was charged with violation of an order of protection and failing to obey the lawful order of a law enforcement officer. Abell was transported to the Henry County Detention Center where he was later released after posting a $2,500.00 bond.

Brad and Denise Steuck, Kolby, Blake and Dalley, Garrett Brooks, Peyton McFrederick and Dakota Thornburg enjoyed Sunday, February 22 on the slopes in Weston, Missouri. They enjoyed skiing and snowboarding. 

A birthday party was held in honor of Bennett Irwin’s 9th birthday at her home in Nevada on Sunday evening, February 22. Dinner of homemade chicken and noodles which she helped her mother, Cassie make and brownies and ice cream were enjoyed by a host of family and friends. The birthday honoree enjoyed her presents and cards.

A 50th birthday celebration was held for Robert Spencer on Sunday, February 22 at the Grain Bin in Hume. A total of 67 family and friends helped Robert celebrate this special birthday!

The community of Hume wishes to extend their sympathy to Teresa Sword and family who have lost several family members lately. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Samantha Davidson put in her birthday money at the Hume United Methodist Church on Sunday. Samantha and her big sister, Cheyenne both share a birthday on February 23. Happy Birthday, girls!

There will be a free will donation Taco Salad Dinner on Sunday, March 8 at the Hume School from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please enter through the East doors of the school. Carryout will be for available for those who would like to use this. The taco dinner will benefit the Hume after Prom festivities for the Junior and Seniors.

Adrian Fire Department dispatched to possible flue fire

The Adrian Rural Fire Department was dispatched and responded on a possible flue fire at a residence northwest of Adrian this evening. Fire units arrived on the scene and made a thorough investigation but could not locate any signs of a flue fire. Fire Fighters used a thermal imaging camera too help search for any fire or any higher than normal heat areas that may be located in a wall, possibly in the attic, or even within the flue, but nothing was found.

Obituary - Herschel Franklin

Herschel Franklin, 95, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Monday, February 23, 2015 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 26, at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, with visitation from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society. (A complete obituary will be posted when available).

Former Appleton City woman arrested on St. Clair County warrant

On Feb. 23, Bobbie Shull, 28, St. Johns, MI, formerly from Appleton City, was arrested on a St Clair County warrant for failing to appear in court on an original misdemeanor charge of animal health and safety from Appleton City Police Department. 

The warrant was issued in September 2014 and stemmed from an incident in March 2014. Bond is set at $150 cash only.

Cass County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deadly shooting of a 30-year-old man

Cass County - The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deadly shooting of a 30-year-old man that occurred early Sunday morning southeast of Harrisonville.

Deputies were called to a residence in the 24000 block of East 275th Street around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday after receiving a 9-1-1 call about a shooting. Deputies arrived and found one subject inside the residence with a fatal gunshot wound. Witnesses stated that during a disturbance involving multiple members of the household, 65 year-old Peter T. Barbookles and another subject was assaulted by the deceased. During the disturbance Mr. Barbookles shot and fatally wounded the subject.

The deceased has been identified as William R. Whelan Jr. 30, of Harrisonville. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Both subjects lived at the residence.

Mr. Barbookles was transported to an area hospital and treated for injuries he received in the disturbance. He was taken into custody following his release from the hospital Sunday. Mr. Barbookles was later released after questioning. Detectives also interviewed several witnesses who were at the residence.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Monday.

The case is currently under review by the Cass County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
