Obituary - Herschel Franklin
Herschel Franklin, 95, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Monday, February 23, 2015 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 26, at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, with visitation from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society. (A complete obituary will be posted when available).
Former Appleton City woman arrested on St. Clair County warrant

On Feb. 23, Bobbie Shull, 28, St. Johns, MI, formerly from Appleton City, was arrested on a St Clair County warrant for failing to appear in court on an original misdemeanor charge of animal health and safety from Appleton City Police Department.
The warrant was issued in September 2014 and stemmed from an incident in March 2014. Bond is set at $150 cash only.
Cass County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deadly shooting of a 30-year-old man
Cass County - The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deadly shooting of a 30-year-old man that occurred early Sunday morning southeast of Harrisonville.
Deputies were called to a residence in the 24000 block of East 275th Street around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday after receiving a 9-1-1 call about a shooting. Deputies arrived and found one subject inside the residence with a fatal gunshot wound. Witnesses stated that during a disturbance involving multiple members of the household, 65 year-old Peter T. Barbookles and another subject was assaulted by the deceased. During the disturbance Mr. Barbookles shot and fatally wounded the subject.
The deceased has been identified as William R. Whelan Jr. 30, of Harrisonville. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Both subjects lived at the residence.
Mr. Barbookles was transported to an area hospital and treated for injuries he received in the disturbance. He was taken into custody following his release from the hospital Sunday. Mr. Barbookles was later released after questioning. Detectives also interviewed several witnesses who were at the residence.
The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Monday.
The case is currently under review by the Cass County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Obituary - Frances Lee Kearns
Frances Lee Kearns, 79, of Drexel, MO passed away February 20, 2015 at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville, MO. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 pm Saturday, February 28th at Mullinax Funeral Home –Drexel Chapel with Rev. Dennis Stone officiating. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 to 3:00 pm Saturday, also at the Drexel Chapel. Burial will follow services in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel, MO. Contributions suggested to the Drexel United Methosit Church or Sharon Cemetery. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.
Frances was born in a house seven miles NE of Drexel on June 18, 1935. She is the daughter of Lee Alexander Holt and Carrie Edith Holt (Carter). She attended Drexel School and graduated in 1953. Frances enjoyed playing basketball in High School and attending school events. On March 18, 1954 she married Damon Kenneth Kearns. He passed away January 1, 2009. Frances worked for the Kansas City Life Insurance Company in Kansas City, Sears, and for the Drexel Schools, before working for the Drexel Post Office until she retired after 42 years of service. Frances was a member of the Drexel United Methodist Church. She was the Superintendent of the children's department for many years. She loved to sew, making many items for her children as well as others in the Drexel community in years past. Frances recently loved to crochet. She made and donated hats, mittens, and sweaters for babies in need. Family holidays were very special to her. She planned and participated in all events with her family by decorating and preparing large meals for each gathering. Frances enjoyed watching college basketball, especially KU games. She always looked forward to her trips with the family to the Sprint Center and Allen Fieldhouse to watch them play. She was also very excited to follow the Drexel High School girls basketball team as they made their way to the state championship. Frances was a person that was always available, especially for any special event involving her family. She made many trips to Warrensburg, Kansas City, Lawrence, and even to New Mexico to support her grandson's endeavors. Frances was always willing to lend an ear to listen to any problems or issues her family may confront. She was also very excited to celebrate the successes they may accomplish. Frances was a devoted caregiver, taking excellent care of her aging parents, and raising her own family. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Frances is survived by her children, Damona Parks of Raymore, MO, and Darren K. Kearns of Drexel, MO. By her grandson Daniel Parks of Kansas City, MO, as well as many cousins. She will be truly missed.
