On Feb. 24, Zachary VanHolt, 25, Collins, was arrested on a St. Clair County warrant charging him with a class C felony of possessing a controlled substance. The warrant was issued on Feb. 23 and stems from an incident in November 2014 when a St. Clair County deputy conducted a traffic stop in Collins. During the investigation an ink pen shaft that tested positive for methamphetamines was located in the glove box. Bond is set at $10,000 cash or surety.

On Feb. 23, a criminal summons was issued for Connie DeHart, 43, Collins, charging her with a class C felony of possessing a controlled substance. The summons was issued on Feb. 23 and stemmed from an incident in July 2014 when a St. Clair County deputy responded to SE 475 Road, Collins, in reference to a suspicious vehicle. During the investigation contact was made with DeHart, who allegedly threw a small bag into a ditch. The bag was retrieved and the contents tested positive for methamphetamine. DeHart was arrested immediately following the incident, but posted a $10,000 surety bond and was released pending formal charges. Court proceedings are scheduled for April 3.

Obituary - Russell H. Chandler
Russell Henry Chandler was born August 4, 1925 in Butler, Missouri, son of Marion Thomas and Tiny Florence (Chaney) Chandler. He attended the Lost Corner Grade School and graduated from Butler High School. Following school, Russell served four years in the U.S. Navy, crossing the equator in his travels. Russell was united in marriage to Marjorie Mae Camerer on July 18, 1943. He and Marjorie were heavily involved in the McGinnis Youth Center in Rich Hill, Missouri, as well as 4-H, where they served as club leaders.
Russell also served on the board of directors for the Mid-America Dairy Association, and traveled yearly to the national locations all over the U.S. He operated a farm and dairy all of his working years, and also worked for a time at Rice Implement in Butler. He was a charter member and honorary lifetime member of the Bates County Elks Lodge No. 2653. He was a longtime member of the Butler Saddle Club, and notably Russell was the last surviving member of the New Hope Baptist Church.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie; an infant son; and another son, Tommy Chandler; two brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by son Wesley Chandler and wife Janie of Butler; son Jim Chandler and wife Marty of Hume, Missouri; son Scott Chandler and wife Debby of Butler; seven grandsons, and four granddaughters; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Zella Rose Doane of Butler; as well as numerous family members.

Rep. Wanda Brown's Capitol Connection: House Members Approve Voter ID Legislation
The House took action last week to pass legislation intended to protect the integrity of the voting process. The members of the House passed two pieces of legislation - one a proposed constitutional amendment and the other a statutory change – that would put in place a requirement that voters must show photo identification before casting their ballots.
This is an issue that has been debated in Missouri and in other states for years now. In fact, Missouri saw a voter ID bill signed into law in 2006 only to see it later struck down by the Missouri Supreme Court. Since that time, the legislature has continued to work on the issue with the goal of finding a compromise that would require voters to prove their identity before voting without disenfranchising Missourians who don’t already have a photo ID.
The legislation passed is meant to address the primary concern of critics by providing a government-issued photo ID at no charge to anyone who doesn’t have one. An amendment added on the floor also provides those without proper identification with a means to obtain a free copy of a birth certificate, which would be needed to obtain a government-issued ID. In addition, to prevent the requirement from being a barrier to those who cannot obtain an ID and those born before 1950 who may not have documentation such as a birth certificate, the bill would allow these Missourians to vote by provisional ballot.

Thursday through Saturday, February 19-21, the Butler Bears varsity
wrestling team travelled to the 2015 MSHSAA State Wrestling
Tournament at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia, MO. The Bears took one
wrestler to the state tournament, Freshman Jacob Shipley (106).

Shipley
drew a tough wrestler from Principia on Thursday morning, Caleb
Kelly. Shipley lost by fall in the second period. Kelly went on to
advance to the semifinal. Shipley had to wrestle back on the
consolation side immediately after, winning a decision over Clayton
Haslag of Fatima 9-2. Friday morning, Shipley landed in the second
round wrestleback with another strong opponent, Konner Shewmaker (SO)
of Versailles. Although he secured the first takedown, Shipley found
himself in trouble in the second period, losing by fall. Shipley
finished his season at 33-14.
- Coach’s Comments
“This
post-season was a tough one for the Bears. Our new district,
district 3, had 6 of the top 12 teams at state from last season in
it. The district also has depth in the particular weight classes
where we have wrestlers trying to take that next step- qualifying for
state. Only one of our 8 varsity wrestlers wrestling at this
district tournament had even attended last season’s district
tournament. The wrestlers who return next season should be better
prepared to have a chance to get out of this district and get to
Columbia. We’re proud that Jacob Shipley got a chance to represent
us at state. Winning a match at state also validates that you didn’t
sneak out of your district or get lucky. Not every draw at state is
equal, and I do think there were a few other 106 lb wrestlers that he
would have matched up better against on the consolation side.
Regardless, he takes back state-level experience to his teammates and
to the practice room for this off-season. In the future, his next
goal will be to keep standing through Saturday- when they pass out
the medals. I would like to say thank you once again to our
wrestling families, our media, and all of our fans through this
season. We appreciate your support.”
