VERNON COUNTY, MO - A Nevada boy has died as the result of falling through the ice on a farm pond in Vernon County Saturday morning. Officials say, at about 9:00 A.M. Saturday morning, Nevada and Vernon County Emergency Personnel responded to situation of 3 boys who had fallen through ice on a farm pond, Northwest of Nevada, in Vernon County. One boy was able to exit the pond on his own, with a second boy extracted from the pond by a relative of one of the boys. He was taken to a local hospital, before being transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.
Rescuers work for around 90 minutes before they located the third boy. Local authorities have not released any names of the 3 boys involved, only saying the boy who died was under 10 years of age. The boys were reportedly playing on the frozen pond, before they fell through the ice.
The Timberline 4-H Club will be hosting a candlelight vigil Monday night at 7:00 P.M. in the Home Economics Building at the Vernon County Fair Grounds in Nevada. Those attending are encouraged to bring candles and/or battery powered tea lights for the short remembrance service.

Rep. Patricia Pike’s Summary Report
JEFFERSON CITY, MO— Representative Patricia Pike’s summary of some of recent legislation. House Approves School Transfer Bill (HB 42) Following is an update on the School Transfer Bill passed out of the House this week. This will not be a factor for any of our District 126 schools in Bates or Vernon Counties. It is targeting failing unaccredited schools in urban districts to give those youth a plan for an education in an accredited school system as close to their present school as possible.
The bill passed we just passed represents a complex but common sense solution to this pressing problem. One of the key components of the bill would allow students in failing schools to move to better performing schools in their current district. The goal with this is to allow kids to stay closer to home while also keeping down costly transportation expenses. In the event space can’t be found in a good school in the district, students would be allowed to transfer to neighboring districts, or possibly attend a charter school or take advantage of a virtual school option.
