Obituary - Mildred A. Shoemaker

Funeral Services for Mildred A. Shoemaker, 100 of Appleton City, MO will be held at 2pm on Sunday, March 22nd at the Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City with burial in the Appleton City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 22nd from 1 - 2pm.

Mildred Shoemaker, daughter of Vance Shoemaker and Grace Minerva (Swopes) Shoemaker, was born June 14, 1914 at the family’s rural homestead near Appleton City, Missouri. She passed away in Appleton City on March 19, 2015 at the age of 100 years, nine months and five days.

Mildred spent her entire life in Appleton City, graduating from Appleton City High School. She was employed for several years at both the Lee Funeral Home and Eckhoff-Hill Funeral Home. The Appleton City community was important to her and she served in civic organizations including The Daughters of Rebekah (Rebekahs) for over 78 years and The Order of the Eastern Star for 68 years. She was a charter member of the Appleton City Garden Club which has been in existence for 60 years.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Barbara Pursley, Nadine Mitchell and Earline Bigley as well as by Carl Chambers, her very special friend and long-time companion. She is survived by her sister, Grace Foale of Rolla, Missouri. She also leaves behind nephews, nieces, several cousins, great nephews and nieces and many friends who love her dearly. She will be greatly missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Eagles fare well at District Music Contest

Miami musicians attended District Music Contest last Friday and returned with the following results:

McKayla Hines - piano solo I (McKayla will advance to State in May)
Danni Masters - vocal solo I (Dani will advance to State in May)
Danni Masters -Bari sax solo I. 
Rena Reitz- vocal solo II
Edward Masters - xylophone solo II
Clarinet Trio - II
7 of 12 Miami entries on Friday were honored with a medal.

Miami music teacher Melissa Groves reported that it was a good day overall and is excited for those who will advance in May.

Obituary - Betty Sue Keiser

A celebration of life for Betty Keiser will be held 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at
Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri with Brother Bill Perkey officiating. Cremation will follow services. Visitation will be held prior to services from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, March 25 at Schowengerdt Chapel. Contributions to Scleroderma Foundation, Heartland Hospice or Charity of Choice.

Betty Sue Keiser, age 79 of Rich Hill, Missouri died Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler, Missouri. She was born January 17, 1936 to Maurice Lavar and Hazel Irene Hooper Blevins in Foster, Missouri.

Betty is survived by her husband Dean Keiser of Rich Hill, Missouri; one son, Michael Keiser and wife Georgia of Adrian, Missouri; two daughters, Sheila Steuck and husband Terry and Becky Jacks and husband Lynn of Rich Hill, Missouri; two brothers, Charles Maurice Blevins and wife Arlone of Fort Scott, Kansas and Edwin Blevins and wife Norma of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; one sister, Patsy Edgman of Lansing, Kansas; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Joan.

A 'full house' at Casino Night in Adrian


It was pretty much shoulder to shoulder Saturday night at the Adrian Optimist building as folks from all over came to have fun and raise money for the Bates County Children's Center. The evening included Mouse Races, an auction, casino games, a raffle and BBQ dinner.

St. Clair County Sheriffs Office: Indiana woman arrested

On March 20, Cynthia Harness, 42, Hammond, IN, was arrested on a St. Clair County warrant for failing to appear in court on nine class D felony charges of passing a bad check. Bond is set at $10,000 cash only. The warrant was issued in February 2005 and stems from incidents in December 2001.

Bates County Sheriff's Office: CCW Classes

The Bates County Sheriff's Office, at the continual request of our citizens, will once again hold a free CCW Class. The class will be held on Sunday March 29th. The classportion will be held in the Sheriff's Conference room at 13 W Dakota, Butler Mo 64730. Class Starts at 8am. You will need to bring one fire arm, either a revolver or semi automatic, eye protection and ear protection. There will be a limited number of guns with ammo to rent for $25 each.

Motorcycle accident in Henry County injures 1

One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident on March 22 in Henry County on Highway 7 at Rt. W.

Robert E. Stacy, 53, Ashland, wearing a helmet, operating a 2010 Victory motorcycle southbound, overtook and struck the rear of the 2012 Chrysler southbound by Dustin L. Koll, 32, of Lincoln, Mo.

Robert E. Stacy experienced minor injuries and was transported by Golden Valley Ambulance to Golden Valley Hospital. His motorcycle had moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Golden Valley Towing.

The Koll vehicle had minor damage and was driven from the scene.

Missouri Highway Patrol Trooper R.C. West investigated the accident and was assisted by Trooper M.G. Yendes.
