Pre-trial Conference Continued in Vernon County Double Murder

VERNON COUNTY, Mo - The pre-trial conference for 18-year old Logan Ellison of El Dorado Springs, who has been charged with the murder of his grandparents, has been continued. The conference, was held last Thursday morning in the Vernon County Courthouse.

Mr.Ellison was taken into custody in October of last year. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree robbery, and two counts of armed criminal action. Ellison allegedly shot his grandparents, 76 year old Herman Ellison and 77 year old Rosie Ellison, in their home in Eastern Vernon County, near the Cedar County line. In December, Ellison, through his attorney, filed a motion to be allowed to wear street clothes in future hearings, which was sustained.

The pre-trial conference continuance is until 10:00 A.M. on Friday, May 1st.

St.Clair County Sheriffs Office: Property damage at Brush Creek Access

On March 23, a St. Clair County deputy took a property damage report at the Brush Creek Access on NE 250 Road. Friends of Brush Creek Vice President James Terry reported trash was scattered in the access area and several ruts made in the grass. Evidence was collected from the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

St Clair County Sheriffs Office: Boat reported stolen

On March 23, a St. Clair County deputy took a stealing complaint at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. Camp Ranger BJ Straw said he received a registration notice for a 14-foot 1985 Lowe flat bottom boat owned by the Heart of America Council. He attempted to find the boat and was unable to locate it on the property. The boat is green and has no motor. 

The investigation is ongoing.

Obituary - Ryan Schlup

Ryan Schlup, of Schell City, Missouri passed away on Sunday, March 22nd at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. He was 14. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City. 

A memorial service is scheduled for 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 28th at the Northeast Vernon County Elementary Campus in Schell City. 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. just prior to the service at the school. Those who wish may contribute to a fund for the family, in care of Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home.

Obituary - Mildred A. Shoemaker

Funeral Services for Mildred A. Shoemaker, 100 of Appleton City, MO will be held at 2pm on Sunday, March 22nd at the Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City with burial in the Appleton City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 22nd from 1 - 2pm.

Mildred Shoemaker, daughter of Vance Shoemaker and Grace Minerva (Swopes) Shoemaker, was born June 14, 1914 at the family’s rural homestead near Appleton City, Missouri. She passed away in Appleton City on March 19, 2015 at the age of 100 years, nine months and five days.

Mildred spent her entire life in Appleton City, graduating from Appleton City High School. She was employed for several years at both the Lee Funeral Home and Eckhoff-Hill Funeral Home. The Appleton City community was important to her and she served in civic organizations including The Daughters of Rebekah (Rebekahs) for over 78 years and The Order of the Eastern Star for 68 years. She was a charter member of the Appleton City Garden Club which has been in existence for 60 years.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Barbara Pursley, Nadine Mitchell and Earline Bigley as well as by Carl Chambers, her very special friend and long-time companion. She is survived by her sister, Grace Foale of Rolla, Missouri. She also leaves behind nephews, nieces, several cousins, great nephews and nieces and many friends who love her dearly. She will be greatly missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Miami music teacher Melissa Groves reported that it was a good day overall and is excited for those who will advance in May.

Obituary - Betty Sue Keiser

A celebration of life for Betty Keiser will be held 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at
Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri with Brother Bill Perkey officiating. Cremation will follow services. Visitation will be held prior to services from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, March 25 at Schowengerdt Chapel. Contributions to Scleroderma Foundation, Heartland Hospice or Charity of Choice.

Betty Sue Keiser, age 79 of Rich Hill, Missouri died Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler, Missouri. She was born January 17, 1936 to Maurice Lavar and Hazel Irene Hooper Blevins in Foster, Missouri.

Betty is survived by her husband Dean Keiser of Rich Hill, Missouri; one son, Michael Keiser and wife Georgia of Adrian, Missouri; two daughters, Sheila Steuck and husband Terry and Becky Jacks and husband Lynn of Rich Hill, Missouri; two brothers, Charles Maurice Blevins and wife Arlone of Fort Scott, Kansas and Edwin Blevins and wife Norma of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; one sister, Patsy Edgman of Lansing, Kansas; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Joan.

A 'full house' at Casino Night in Adrian


It was pretty much shoulder to shoulder Saturday night at the Adrian Optimist building as folks from all over came to have fun and raise money for the Bates County Children's Center. The evening included Mouse Races, an auction, casino games, a raffle and BBQ dinner.
