Larry Ewing

Larry Gordon Ewing, age 72 of Branson, formerly of Nevada, MO passed from this life April 2, 2015 at his home. He was born September 5, 1942 in Nevada, the son of C. Gordon and Glessie Lorene (Peak) Ewing. Both parents preceded him in death. On July 1, 1967 he was united in marriage to Judy Lorraine Flynn and together they became the parents of two daughters.

Larry attended school in Nevada, graduating with the Class of 1960. Somewhat later he earned an Associate's Degree from Crowder College. He also served our country with a military commitment with the United States Navy where he was recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. Upon completion of his military duties he returned to this area working at various jobs until beginning employment with 3-M Company where he worked for nearly thirty years until his retirement. Shortly after that, he moved to Branson and made that area his home. Throughout his life Larry was actively involved in fire safety and firefighting and was a longtime member of the Compton Junction Volunteer Fire Department. For many years he taught Fire Safety Instruction at both Crowder College and the University of Missouri in Columbia. When time allowed he enjoyed trout fishing and spent as much time outdoors as possible. He loved studying the history of mining also. He was a great cook and loved to share recipes but most of all loved making holiday snacks to share with friends and neighbors - - - always personally delivered. He was the master of making “hot peanuts”

Survivors include his daughters, Kimberly D. Redlich and husband Mike of Ellington; and Abigail L. Brown and husband Mike of Nevada; brother, David Ewing and wife Julie of Nevada; sister, Nancy Becker of Lenexa, KS; grandchildren, Caroline Olson, Cooper Redlich, Bryce Applegate, Hadley Fletchall, and Sam Brown; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Aside from his parents, Larry was preceded in death by an infant sister, Jo Ann.

A memorial service for Larry Gordon Ewing is scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 10, 2015 at Ferry Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Ferree officiating. A visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. just prior to the service also at the funeral home. Private interment will follow at Newton Burial Park in Nevada.

Those who wish may contribute in Mr. Ewing’s memory to the Compton Junction Volunteer Fire Department in care of Ferry Funeral Home.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Arrest Report: Excelsior Springs man arrested

On 4/3/15 around 2:50 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County arrested 45 year old Jospeh L. Adams of Excelsior Springs, Missouri.

He was arrested on 1.) Clay County warrant for contempt of court - Non support. Mr. Adams was booked into the Bates County Jail and he is bond able.

Resurfacing Project on I-49 Between Rich Hill and Nevada to Begin Week of April 13‏

Bates/Vernon Counties - Drivers can expect lane closures and occasional traffic delays on I-49 in Bates and Vernon Counties for a resurfacing project beginning the week of April 13, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Contractor crews will resurface approximately 20 miles between Bates County Route AB in Rich Hill and Route 54 Nevada.

The project also will upgrade guardrail in areas.

In addition to lane closures, drivers will experience a reduced speed limit of 60 mph through the work zones.

Weather and/or construction delays will alter the work schedule.

The project also includes resurfacing Route 18 in Bates County between Adrian and Merwin. That project is expected to begin later in the summer.

Obituary - Richard "Dick" Bedwell

Graveside services will be 3 p.m Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri with Todd Allen officiating.  Visitation will be prior to services from 2 - 3 p.m. at the Schowengerdt Chapel.  In lieu of flowers contributions to the Children’s Center or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Richard Leon Bedwell, age 56 of Butler, Missouri departed suddenly on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 in Winfield, Alabama. He was born June 22, 1958 in Norfolk County, Virginia to William (Baldy) Leon and Kathryn Jean Berry Bedwell.

Dick is survived by his wife, Kathryn Gay Bedwell of Butler, Missouri; two sons Bryan Bedwell and fiancee’ Jessica Reeves of Butler, Missouri, and Charlie Laber of Butler, Missouri; and a daughter, April Bedwell of Baxter Springs, Kansas.  He leaves his most precious grandchildren, William Bryce and Elizabeth Brianne Bedwell.  Dick is also survived by two sisters, Debbie Adams and husband Larry of Butler, Missouri and Jenny Thornton and husband Mike of Nevada, Missouri and a brother, Kelly Bedwell and wife Sandy of Purdy, Missouri. 

Lowry City man wanted on Missouri Department of Corrections Board of Probation and Parole Warrant

The Missouri Department of Corrections Board of Probation and Parole has issued an arrest warrant for Kasey Groves, 24, Lowry City, for absconding supervision. Groves is currently on probation for three counts of class C felony burglary-second degree. The warrant from probation and parole was issued on March 27.

Work begins again on Future Law Enforcement Museum

A small mile stone was reached today as jail cells were removed from the old high school on Pine Street. The cells last seen use in 2004 when the Butler Police Department housed females in them. Once the construction of the new Sheriff's Office was complete all county inmates began to be housed in the new jail. The Cells were dismantled by Sheriff's Posse member Chuck Bullock. After the cells were dismantled to manageable pieces, Inmate Coordinator Blaine Baldwin and several inmates began the task of moving them to the future Law Enforcement Museum on Ft. Scott Street in Butler Missouri.

The Sheriff's Posse purchased the old museum from the Historical Society in 2011 after finding out that its original purpose was the Sheriff's residence and County Jail. The first step in to restoring the building was to raise funds to replace the roof that was extremely dilapidated. After several years of fundraising the roof project was completed in 2013. Now that the roof has been replaced the task of restoring the interior of the building will begin.

The jail cells that are being taken to the future Law Enforcement Museum were originally manufactured in 1892. While the origin and history of these particular jail cells are still unknown at this time, they are correct for the type of the cells that would have been original to the building. Once all the pieces have been delivered to the Law Enforcement Museum they will be welded back together and put on display when the museum opens the doors.

Nevada man arrested in connection to an assault case

A Nevada man has been arrested in connection to an assault case. Nevada Police Department Officers say, Nevada PD have concluded an investigation into a suspected assault and drug case that occurred in Nevada. Officials say, Officers were dispatched on March 31st to a report of a shoplifter at a department store located in the 2200 block of East Lincoln. Reports indicate that store employees allegedly observed the suspect remove several items from store stock and hide the merchandise inside his clothing. Upon store employees approaching the suspect to detain and hold for police, the suspect allegedly bolted from the store to the parking lot, where the suspect attempted to force his way into two separate cars that were operated in the area at that time. Officials say, after the two failed escape attempts, the suspect was observed entering a blue Ford truck and allegedly attempted to run down a store employee standing in the parking lot. The employee was able to get out of the way. Officers were able to locate the fleeing suspect and stop the vehicle near Subway and Hickory Street. Officers have taken 24 year old Thomas Iseman, Jr., of Nevada, into custody. Iseman was arrested without incident and police recovered property believed to have been stolen at the store and suspected illegal drugs.

He is charged with tampering with a motor vehicle in the 1st degree, possession of a controlled substance, assault in the 2nd degree, and deliver controlled substance to a jail, all class C felonies. Iseman is being held in the Vernon County Jail. Bond has been set at $25,000.00 cash or surety.

Here comes the rain...

Things might get a little loud during the overnight hours as storms move in from the south. Rain chances increase to about 70% after midnight with an overnight low around 45. You'll probably need a jacket as you head out to work tomorrow. There are currently no watches or warnings in effect, we'll keep you posted if any significant weather develops.
