Hume News 4/21/15

The community of Hume wishes to extend their sympathy to the family of Tom Barnes of Lee Summit, MO. Tom was a 1966 graduate of Hume High School and a former business owner in Hume. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

The community of Hume also wishes to extend their sympathy to the family of Brenda Mullis Laning, a 1956 graduate of Hume High School. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers go out to both of these families.

Area cemeteries are getting ready for Memorial Day. The Woodfin Cemetery will hold a clean up day on Saturday, April 25 at 9:00 a.m.; if it rains May 2 will be the next date. The area cemeteries always look so nice due to the efforts of cemetery boards and volunteers.

The Hume Alumni Planning Committee held their first meeting on April 19 at 4:00 p.m. at the Hume Multi-purpose room. Barb Brooks is President this year. If anyone would like to come and join us, the next meetings are May 3 and May 17 at 4:00 p.m. On Friday May 22 we will meet for set up at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, May 23 will be the Alumni at 7:00 p.m. Clean up for Alumni will be on Sunday afternoon with a time to be announced later. If you attended school and for some reason didn’t get to graduate you are still welcome to attend, please just let us know so we may plan accordingly. Lockdown over at Clinton Walmart no explosive device found

Due to certain circumstances surrounding this particular bomb threat, it was decided that personnel with Whiteman Air Force Base Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit would be called in to make a more thorough assessment of the scene, requiring the Wal Mart store to be closed for an extended period of time. 

No explosive device or any indication of an explosive device were located. At this time, neither a suspect nor a motive for the false bomb threat has been identified. The store was reopened shortly before 10:00 p.m. 

Clinton Police Detectives are continuing to investigate this incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Investigations Unit at 660-885-2679.

Butler man killed in 2 vehicle accident South of Virginia

A Butler, Missouri man was killed Monday afternoon in a 2 vehicle accident just South of Virginia on V Highway in rural Western Bates County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 1973 Ford E-700 Dump Truck driven by 19 year old Joseph A. Fields of Rich Hill, Missouri failed to stop at a stop sign located at the intersection of CR NW 2002 and V Highway just South of Virginia.


The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the dump truck was struck while attempting to cross the intersection by a 2006 Dodge Dakota truck driven by 47 year old John A. Barth of Butler, Missouri in the side causing the dump truck to over turn.


Mr. Barth was life-flighted to Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.


Mr. Fields refused treatment at the scene of the accident, this is fatality accident #11 for Troop A of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

UPDATE: Clinton Walmart Still Locked Down

Nearly four hours after calling law enforcement the Clinton Walmart remains closed and locked down. 

We are hearing reports that a specially trained canine unit, which searched the store within the last hour, may have "hit" on something suspicious.

A team from Kansas City are said to be on the way to the scene at this moment.

Mid America Live will continue to monitor this situation and update when we know more.
