Bates County Memorial Hospital honors Barry Bise on his retirement

BATES COUNTY, Mo - On April 28, 2015 Bates County Memorial Hospital honored Barry Bise on his retirement from the hospital.
Family, friends and co-workers joined Barry in his celebration. Barry began his employment in October, 1972 as a Laboratory Technologist in the Laboratory Department and worked until August, 1983. From 1985 to 1986 Barry provided limited coverage in the Laboratory, and then transferred to full time employment again in July, 1988 through December, 1992. In February, 1994, Barry returned full-time as a Medical Technologist until his retirement in 2015.

Barry has many fond memories of all of the employees he has worked with throughout the years. His presence and strong work ethic will be missed. On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors,

Barry was presented with a wall pendulum clock by Mr. Ed Hannon, Chief Executive Officer.

Butler Elementary Summer School

Butler Elementary School:

Summer School letters and enrollment forms went out last week and are due back by Friday May 8th. Summer School begins on Tuesday May 26th - Friday June 19th.

It is open to all students in the elementary and goes from 8:00am - 12:30pm each day including breakfast and lunch.

There are extra copies of the letter and enrollment form in the office just in case yours didn't make it home!

Weather Update: Scattered Showers This Weekend

More perfect weather expected for Thursday and most of Friday. A few showers and thunderstorms will work their way into the area for this weekend, mainly north of Interstate 70. Severe weather is not anticipated with these rain showers. The wet pattern picks up and persists through the early part of next week.

Obituary - Donald R. Smotherman

Donald Ray Smotherman, age 78, of Laurie, passed away Monday, April 27, 2015, at his home. He was born December 6, 1936, in Kansas City, Kansas, a son of the late Fred R. and Eula Fay (Waggoner) Smotherman.

Don spent most of his childhood in the Quindaro area of Kansas City, Kansas, where he attended and graduated from Wyandotte High School. He had a lifetime career as a pipefitter out of Kansas City’s Union Local 533. During his apprenticeship, he received the National Apprentice of the Year award at Purdue University. He was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Lance from the Rosedale area of Kansas City, Kansas on May 19, 1956. The couple then began a lifelong walk in the Christian faith. Don and Bev were blessed with two sons, Steven R. Smotherman and Ronald L. Smotherman.

Don and Bev resided in the Kansas City and Shawnee areas of Kansas. Upon retirement, they moved to the area they loved the most on the Lake of the Ozarks. They lived the remainder of their lives enjoying their beloved lake and the Senior Citizens Center located in Laurie.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, with whom he shared fifty-six years. He is survived by his sons, Steven R. Smotherman of Climax Springs, Missouri and Ronald L. Smotherman (Pam) of Butler, Missouri; two brothers, David L. Smotherman (Alice) of Lenexa, Kansas and Robert D. Smotherman (Bonita) of Hollister, Missouri; one sister, Carol J. Huntsman (David) of Kearney, Missouri; four grandchildren, Josh, Sherrie, Penny and Nathan; several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his good friend, Pauline Turner. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at the First Assembly of God Church in Versailles. Graveside services and interment will follow in Garber Memorial Estates Cemetery in Laurie. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Expressions of sympathy may be left online at www.kidwellgarber.com.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Laurie/Sunrise Beach Chapel.

Minor Traffic Accident on I-49

The Butler Fire Department along with The Missouri State Highway Patrol is in route to a 2 vehicle accident on Interstate I-49 around Mile Marker 129.

The accident is involving a truck that has been side swiped by a semi truck. Bates County EMS is in route to scene just to check out the children in the vehicle just for safety precautions.


Mid America Live will update this when and if more information becomes available. 


The accident is minor so we are unsure if an additional information will be announced.

Nevada man arrested after assault with a whiskey bottle

The Nevada Police Department would like to announce that we have concluded an investigation of a felony assault case that occurred on April 28th, 2015. Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of W. Godfrey Lane in reference to an assault that had just occurred.

Responding Police Officers discovered an unconscious male subject lying in the yard of the residence. The victim appeared to have sustained head injuries that rendered him unresponsive. Police provided emergency first aid to the victim until medics arrived on scene.

Investigating Officers determined that a male suspect, known to the victim had fled the scene prior to law enforcement arrival. Witness’s advised officers on the scene that the victim had received multiple head wounds after being assaulted with a glass whisky bottle. The victim was transported by Vernon County Ambulance to the Nevada Regional Airport where he was transported to a medical facility by helicopter.

Nevada Police Officers began searching for the suspect and were able to locate him at an area hospital where he was receiving treatment for minor injuries. After obtaining investigative leads, police arrested the suspect without incident.

The assault suspect was identified as a 31 year old Nevada resident: Kenneth L Biles Jr. Biles was taken into custody and transported to the Vernon County Jail.

An Arrest Warrant was issued by the Vernon County Associate Circuit Court on the following charge:

Assault 1st Degree, a class B Felony.

Biles is being held in lieu of a $50,000 cash or surety bond.
