Honda recalls 5 million cars as airbag woes spread

Honda has recalled an additional 4.89 million cars equipped with possibly faulty airbags manufactured by Japan-based Takata. Honda said it was recalling the vehicles because of the risk of "abnormal" inflation of the airbags.

The carmaker has recalled a total of 11.4 million vehicles due to problems with Takata airbags since 2008. Honda's latest recall comes one day after its Japanese counterparts Toyota and Nissan recalled 6.56 million cars of their own.

Tens of millions of cars equipped with Takata airbags have been recalled by automakers recently over fears the airbags may explode and send shrapnel flying at drivers and passengers. Honda has now issued more than 10 separate recalls over the issue.
Engineers at Takata, one of the world's largest airbag makers, first noticed problems with the chemical mix used in its airbags more than a decade ago. At least five deaths have since been linked to the company's malfunctioning airbags.
Takata shares declined by 5.4% in Tokyo trading on Thursday.

Toyota said the decision to expand its recall was made after investigators uncovered moisture problems that could make airbags "susceptible to abnormal deployment in a crash."

"Among the parts collected from the Japanese market, certain types of airbag inflators were found to have a potential for moisture intrusion over time," the company said.

Ballard R-II School District Middle Level Student of the Month

Brice Eidson
The Ballard R-II School District is pleased to be working in conjunction with the Ballard Parent-Teacher Organization to honor a Middle Level (grades 5-8) Student of the Month for the 2014-2015 school year.

Student of the Month is selected by the staff of the Ballard R-II School District using the following criteria: attendance; attitude towards others and towards school; behavior; leadership; and improvement in or maintenance of good grades.

The Middle Level Student of the Month for May is 7th grader Brice Eidson, son of Richie and Tina Eidson. Instructor, Nardene Wiskur claims “Brice takes the extra time and effort to do the best job he can on his assignments. He has never given up and done a careless job even though the end of the year is getting close—a time when students tend to get lazy. Because of his hard work and extra effort, his writing is terrific. If he keeps working hard in high school, just as he has this year in junior high, he will be testing out of freshman composition in college.”

For Brice’s hard work in school he is receiving a certificate of recognition from the Ballard PTO and a $15 gift certificate to the Ballard Grill. Pictured: Brice Eidson and Principal Jimmie Barton.
