4-H Press Release: Bates County Fashion Revue‏

(BUTLER, MO – June 9, 2015) - Ten young ladies took to the runway in the annual Bates County 4-H Fashion Revue and show held on June 8, 2015, at the First Christian Church in Butler.

According to Bates County 4-H Youth Specialist Alan J. Mundey, winners in the event will compete at the State Fashion Revue in Columbia in September. In the junior division (ages 8-10) of Clothes You Make, Kaylee O’Farrell (Hudson Hustlers) received top honors. Emma McIntire (Hudson Hustlers) will represent Bates County at the state event in the Clothes You Make intermediate division (ages 11-13) and Aubry Terry (County Line) will take the state stage in the senior division (ages 14 and older) of Clothes You Make.

State qualifier in the Clothes You Buy category is intermediate division winner Shaylee Terry (County Line 4-H).

In the Clothes You Knit/Crochet category, Brennah Filtingberger (V-52) will advance to state competition.

Other blue ribbon winners participating were Noelle Abend, Ella Armentrout, Kalyn Eckhoff, Victoria Newkirk, and Keegan Yarick.

Butler R-V School District Additional Pre-School Program

Butler R-V School District is pleased to offer an additional pre-school program beginning August, 2015. This is a first come, first serve opportunity. Classes are beginning to fill up, so pick up your application, through June 30, at the Butler Elementary School office.

Bates County Memorial Hospital: Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group


Semi Truck accident North of Rich Hill on I-49

Shortly after 3:00 a.m. This morning the Missouri State Highway Patrol along with The Bates County Sheriffs Office, Bates County EMS and The Butler Fire Department all responded to a 1 vehicle semi truck accident in the Northbound Lanes of I-49 at mile marker 126.9 North of Rich Hill. The driver was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The official accident report hasn't been released from the Missouri State Highway Patrol at this time and will be updated in full when it is made available to Mid America Live.

51st Annual Bushwacker Days in Nevada

 The 51st Bushwacker Days will be held in Nevada June 10th - June 13th with a "Salute to our Heroes, civilian and military". Enjoy a street carnival, baby contest, toddler swimsuit show, parade and a car and truck show.

 David Phelps from Nashville will present a gospel concert on Wednesday June 10th beginning at 7pm. Local legends will be on stage on Thursday beginning at 8:30.

Friday will feature Missouri’s Fallen Heroes Display in the bottom floor of the Vernon County Courthouse and Carl Acuff Jr. and Jeannie Kendall will be on stage Friday at 8:30pm.

Saturday will feature a full day of festivities culminating in the Larry Gatlin and Gatlin Brother performing at 8:30pm on the Main Stage.

Obituary - Richard Keith "Pappy" Williams

Richard Keith "Pappy" Williams
Richard Keith “Pappy” Williams, 78, of Rich Hill passed away on Friday, June 05, 2015. Richard was born on May 12, 1937 in Nevada, Missouri to D.C. and Glady Williams. At 18 he enlisted in the Air Force. He married his childhood sweetheart, Naomi Hagerman, on January 19, 1957. They traveled the world and had three children. He retired from the Air Force after 22 years of service.

Richard will be remembered for his unconditional love of country, God, and family. He enjoyed working with his hands, building and repairing things “with spray cans.” He was always loyal, dependable and never missed an opportunity to learn or share his wisdom with others. A tenacious man, he never gave up on anything or anyone.

He will be missed by his wife, Naomi, Bradford, Kimela, Deah, Christy, Anette, Mervin, Bradley, Benjamin, Susan, Cassidy, Brandon, Brent’lee, Blake, Katelyn, William, Johnathon, Mandy, Brandon, Caleb, Megan, Dierk, Holly, Sabastion, Kaiden, Skyler, Kayla, Ashton, Aiden, Oliver, Antigone, nieces, Marilyn, and Margaret and countless others.

He may not have outlived us all but he certainly lived more than any of us.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. with Military Honors following on Friday, June 12, 2015 at Community Christian Church in Nevada with Gary Kurtz officiating. The family will receive friends from 3-4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church

Obituary - LaVern Allen Croan

 LaVern Allen Croan
 LaVern Allen "Old Man" Croan, age 76, of Blue Mound, Kansas passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015. He was born at Bush City, Kansas on June 22, 1938 the son of Vernon Allen and Ruby McGraw Croan. He married Judy Starbuck on October 26, 1964 at Fort Scott, Kansas. He worked for several years as a welder and mostly recently as a "junker". LaVern enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Vandale Croan in 1989, a brother, Butch Croan and a sister, Velma "Bid" Hermreck. He is survived by his wife, Judy, three sons, Virgil, Vernon, and Vance, five daughters: Virginia Boothe, Verna Frye, Valerie Roberts, Vicki James, and Diane Trostle, a brother John Croan, four sisters: LaVonne Chase, Judy Gaddis, Shirley Weems, and Martha Sumners, and numerous grand, great grand and great great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2015 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. Burial will be in the Centerville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mound City Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the LaVern Croan Memorial Fund.
