Deepwater man killed in four vehicle Benton County crash

A Deepwater, Missouri man was killed after being involved in a four-vehicle accident on Oct. 24 in Benton County on U.S. 65 Highway and Byrum Avenue.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when a northbound 2006 Dodge Ram driven by Lawrence D. Tucker, 18, Cole Camp, Missouri. 


Mr. Tucker was passing a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado that was also northbound driven by Randy M. Hercules, 51, Deepwater, Missouri and a 2013 Ford F-150 northbound by Kevin M. Gladman, 25, Stover, Missouri. The Tucker vehicle struck the Hercules and Gladman vehicles. 

Mr. Tucker's vehicle then struck a 2009 Nissan Altima southbound by Shian N. Swearingin, 18, Hermitage, Missouri. 

The Gladman vehicle exited the roadway and overturned. The Tucker vehicle continued on and struck the towed unit of the Swearingin vehicle, causing it to exit the right side of the roadway and overturn.

Randy M. Hercules was pronounced dead at 9:33 p.m. his body was transported by the Benton County Coroner to Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw. The Hercules vehicle was totaled and removed from the scene by Precision Towing.

Lawrence D. Tucker sustained moderate injuries in this accident and was airlifted by LifeFlight to the University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital. The Tucker vehicle had extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Precision Towing.


Kevin M. Gladman sustained moderate injuries and was transported by Cole Camp EMS to Bothwell Regional Hospital in Sedalia. His vehicle was totaled and removed from the scene by Precision Towing.

Shian N. Swearingin sustained moderate injuries and was transported by Warsaw EMS to Lake Regional Hospital. Her vehicle was totaled and removed from the scene by Precision Towing.

Obituary - George Clayton Harris

George Clayton Harris
George Clayton Harris, 86, Milo, MO passed from this life on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at his home in Milo following a lengthy illness. George was born in May 31, 1929 in Bluff Dale, TX the son of Clayton S. and Minnie Lee (Lovelace) Harris. He was united in marriage to Roberta C. Gash on August 5, 1954 in Woodward, OK and she survives of the home.

George served in the United States Navy for four years from 1948 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict. Following his service years he became an agent for Central Airlines in Ft. Worth, TX and then later transferred to Woodward, OK. In August of 1955 George came to Milo and began farming and raising cattle, which he continued to do throughout his life. He also worked at the State Hospital #3 as an aide for 14 years. As a hobby George enjoyed painting automobiles. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Ft. Worth.

In addition to his wife Roberta, survivors include one son, Steven Harris and his wife Rhonda, Milo; and one daughter, Kathleen Marie Mullen and her husband Richard, Milo; five grandchildren, Edward Allen Clark, Robert Clark, Christina Clark, Stephanie Breshears, Lisa Shouse; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Anna Kisner, Bentonville, AR. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Christopher.

A private graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2015 at the Fort Scott National Cemetery, Fort Scott, KS with Chaplain William James Schaeffer officiating. The family will receive friends from 4-6:00 p.m. on Sunday Evening at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Those who wish may contribute in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or American Diabetes Association.

Bates County Youth Advocacy Potato Day: Don’t Be a Dud! Buy a Spud!

If you like baked potatoes and homemade cookies, don’t miss the BCYAC Potato Day on Monday, November 9. For the price of $5.00, you can have a large, baked potato(choice of ham or chili), sour cream, a cookie and a water delivered to your home, business or school. 

Deliveries will be made in Butler from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Lunchtime deliveries will be made in Rich Hill and Adrian. You must be within the city limits for delivery! You can also place pick-up orders. These can be picked up at the United Methodist Church, 205 W Ohio Street, Butler.

To get your potato feast, you can order between Friday, October 30 and Thursday, November 5. Call the Get Fit Gym in Butler at 660-200-2100 or place an email order at bcyouthadvocacycouncil@gmail.com. Cut off on orders is Thursday, November 5. Be sure and give location, time and a contact number for your delivery. Also make your choice of ham or chili.

There are a limited number of potatoes available, so “Don’t Be a DUD! Order a Spud!” Order forms will be delivered the week of November 2 to schools and businesses that have previously purchased from BCYAC.

Proceeds are used to finance BCYAC projects including: county-wide Advanced Placement classes(college credit) scholarships, two $500 scholarships for Bates County seniors enrolling in technical or trade school, the Butler Youth Center and the Pool Pals program. The BCYAC is a not-for-profit that provides programs and opportunities for the youth of Bates County.










Hume Community News 10/20/15

The Annual PTO/Hume School Carnival was held on Friday evening, October 16. Congratulations to Carnival Prince and Princess Tucker Madison and Dalley Steuck and to King and Queen Adriene Harris and Alexis White. The carnival was great and hats off to the PTO, Teachers, Parents and Students for a great evening!


On Saturday, October 17 Wilma Swarens, Pam Swarens and Tyler, Adam Swarens & Wyatt, Karen Irwin, Jean Zinn and Diana Morrison joined a host of family and friends to help celebrate the 40th Wedding Anniversary of Bill and Cheryl Gillette in Nevada. Games were played with the Gillette’s choosing their players to play such games as Family Feud, Name that phrase from a song and Minute to win it. Delicious soups, breads and crackers were served along with cake.


On Saturday, October 17 several attended the wedding of Ryan Herda and Kylie Kirchhoff in California, MO. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Herda. The Herda’s reside in Hume.


Don’t forget the Annual Lord’s Acre Day BBQ and Auction on Saturday, November 7 with the free will donation meal to start at 11:00 a.m. with the auction to start at 1:00 p.m. at the Hume United Methodist Church in Hume.

Update: Amsterdam man injured in dump truck rollover West of Adrian

Around 3:45p.m. yesterday the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with assistance of the Butler Fire Department, Adrian Fire Department, Bates County Sheriffs Office and Bates County EMS all responded to a one vehicle rollover accident 5 miles West of Adrian on 18 Highway.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 1998 International dump truck driven by 22 year old Cody D. Addleman of Amsterdam traveled off the right side of the roadway, overturned and struck a fence.

Mr. Addleman sustained minor injuries in this accident and was transported by ambulance to the Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.


The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by the owner.
