Disturbance leads to arrest in Rich Hill

On December 17, 2015, Deputies were dispatched to Rich Hill to assist the Rich Hill Police Department on a disturbance call. Deputies were advised that on the arrival of the Rich Hill Officer a male subject had fled the scene on a yellow four wheeler. Once on scene Deputies were advised the reporting party did not want to pursue charges.

A short time later Sheriff Anderson observed the male subject riding the four wheeler down the street. When Sheriff Anderson attempted to make contact with the subject he began darting down several streets in an attempt to avoid contact. The four wheeler and the subject were found behind a house on 2nd and Pine Street. When Sheriff Anderson attempted to make contact with the subject behind the house the subject took off running on foot. After a short foot pursuit the Sheriff was able to catch him in the street where he scuffled with him until the Detectives assisted in taking him into custody. During the foot pursuit the subject was observed throwing a knife and cigarette package.


The Subject was identified as James  Mattingley of Archie, Missouri. Mr. Mattingley was transported to the Bates County Jail where he was booked in on the following warrants:
2 counts of Driving While Revoked,
1 count of Failing to pay Child Support,
1 count of Possession of a Dangerous Drugs,
1 count of 1st Degree Burglary,
1 count of 2nd Degree Felony Assault.

Mr. Mattingley’s Bonds totaled $55,000.00. Mr. Mattingley may also be facing additional charges of Resisting Arrest and Possession of a Control Substance.

Obituary - Dorothy Louise Christensen

Dorothy Louise Christensen
Dorothy Louise Christensen, 89, Nevada, MO departed this life on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Joe Clark Residential Care Center in Nevada. Dorothy was born on October 10, 1926 in De Queen, Arkansas to Herschel Van Buren and Ethel (Williamson) Hendrix. She was united in marriage to Donald Carl Christensen in Carthage, MO in 1942 and he preceded her in death.

Dorothy was raised in Idabel, OK and attended school there. She worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell for over 30 years in Dallas, TX. She along with her husband came to Nevada in 1979. Dorothy worked as a manager of Spring Valley Apartments from 1989-1995. She also volunteered at the Nevada Senior Center for a number of years. Dorothy attended Countryside Assembly of God Church in Nevada.

Survivors include one daughter, Valo Jones and her husband Dr. Ron Jones, Nevada; one son, Jack Christensen, The Colony, TX; 10 grandchildren, Judi O’Connell, Katrina Jarrard, Don Christensen, David Christensen, Robert Christensen, Brian Christensen, Sam Jones, Scott Jones, Libby Nuessen, Dan Jones; 26 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great granddaughter; one daughter-in-law, Frances Christensen, Rapid City, SD; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Don she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Donald; one grandson, Jack Christensen; three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada with Pastor Ted Furry officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home

Those who wish may contribute in her memory to the Nevada Senior Center in c/o Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Obituary - Kathleen S. Steinhoff

Kathleen S. Steinhoff, 61, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Saturday, December 12, 2015. No services are scheduled.

Kathleen was born November 25, 1954 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Robert and Edith (McUrrian) Botts. She is survived by one son, Patrick Ewing; one brother, Robert Botts; other relatives and friends.

Obituary - DeAnna Rae Williams

DeAnna Rae Williams, 78, Lone Jack, Missouri, died Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Crown Care Center in Harrisonville, Missouri. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

DeAnna was born October 12, 1937 in Ionia, Missouri, the daughter of Lester and Bernice (Smith) Williams. She was a 1955 graduate of Cole Camp, Missouri High School. DeAnna owned and operated DeAnna School of dance for 35 years in Blue Springs, Missouri. She had also worked for Dillards in Kansas City, Missouri and for SEI in Lee’s Summit.

DeAnna was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Guy L. Williams, and a daughter, DiAnna Lynn Taylor. She is survived by three sons, Derek S. Brown, Blue Springs, Missouri, Darren W. Brown, Kansas City, Missouri and Dennis B. Harbit, Pleasant Hill, Missouri; one daughter, DeLisa McKinzie, Bucyrus, Kansas; son-in-law, Gary Taylor, Lone Jack, Missouri; 6 grandchildren, LoAnna Schmidt, Jason Brown, Amanda Johnson, Angie Wilson, Paige McKinzie, and Kayla McKinzie, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Obituary - Glenna Kay Wright

Glenna Kay Wright, age 53, of Nevada, MO passed away December 15, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. She was born October 27, 1962 in Nevada, the daughter of Louis Glenn and Sharon Kay (Mulkins) Wright.

Glenna attended school in Nevada, and then graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin. She lived most of her life in the Vernon county area with the exception of a period of about five years that was spent in New Orleans living near her brother. She worked in food service through her life at the 54 CafĂ© and Country Kitchen among others. When time allowed she enjoyed a good cold Coca-Cola, her dogs and cats, and was a loyal fan of the Kansas Chiefs. But her greatest love was the love that she had for her family.

Survivors include her brothers, Chris Wright and wife Chasity of Lamar along with their children, Michael Danner, Victoria Wright, Johnathon Danner, Macy Danner, and McKenzie Wright; Tim Deeter and wife Angie of Forsythe along with their children, Brieanna, Christian, Karson, and Jacob; and Jeff Wright of Las Vegas, NV. Glenna was preceded in death by her parents, grandmother Gwen (Tiny) Kennedy; and brothers, Rodney Wright and Donald Wright.

Funeral services for Glenna Kay Wright are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with interment to follow in the Antioch Cemetery in Nevada. Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. just prior to the service also at the funeral home. Those who wish may contribute in her memory to Vernon County People for Pets in care of Ferry Funeral Home.

Student charged after knife incident at Smith-Cotton High School

A 17-year-old student was arrested Monday morning at Smith-Cotton High School after allegedly threatening a school administrator with a knife, according to Pettis County Sheriff Kevin Bond.

At 9:31 a.m., deputies from the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office responded to Smith-Cotton High School on a report of a disturbance involving a student with a knife in a hallway at the high school. Bond said a school administrator was taking some disciplinary action against the student.

Obituary - Wade Paul Hicks

Wade Paul Hicks, 86, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Monday, December 14, 2015 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 17 at the Faith Baptist Church in Harrisonville with visitation from 10:00-11:00.

Burial will be in Urich Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Baptist Church memorial fund, VFW, or Salvation Army.
