Obituary - Joyce May Elder


Joyce May Elder, 55, Nevada, MO passed from this life on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at her home in Nevada. Joyce was born August 22, 1960 in Ottawa, KS to Lindsay Ray and Laure Mabel (Lester) Elder.

Joyce was raised in Wellsville, KS. Throughout the years she lived in various places including Ottawa, KS, Chicago, IL, Montana, and Texas. It is said “to have been around the block.” Joyce has worked at various area nursing facilities for the past 40 years. Her residence has been Nevada the past 13 years. Joyce had a love for panda bears, doing crossword puzzles, reading books, and drawing. She enjoyed listening to REO Speedwagon, and Bruce Springsteen. She also had a great love and respect for Veterans.

Survivors include her husband, Ken, of the home (originally from Chicago); her daughter Andrea Casida, Nevada; her siblings, Lindsay Elder, Jr., Thompson Falls, MT, Frances Pearsall and her husband Irvin, Troy, MT, Patty Sheler and her husband Clifford, Ottawa, Walter Elder, Ottawa, Barbara McDaniel, Florida, and Alice Calahan, Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Diane Rose Casida.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Verizon Wireless Antenna Tower Shot near LaCygne

On March 15 or 16 someone shot a Verizon Wireless antenna on a tower in the LaCygne area. In addition to the cost of replacing the antenna, approximately $15,000, cell phone service to that tower was interrupted.

Anyone with information on this or other crimes should contact the Linn County Sheriff’s Office at 913-795-2665 or the Linn County Crime Stoppers at 800-471-TIPS.

Adrian teen injured in Cass County Crash

Around 7:50am this morning the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County responded to a one vehicle accident on B Highway around 1 mile East of T Highway in rural Cass County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2006 Pontiac driven by 16 year old Brendan R. Shackles of Adrian, Missouri traveled off the right side of the roadway overcorrected before striking a ditch and overturning coming to rest in a field.

Mr. Shackles sustained minor injuries in this accident and he was transported by private vehicle to Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, Missouri.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by Adrian Towing.

Butler teacher found in sticky situation


A HUGE SHOUT OUT to Mr. Stephen Miller and Coach Aaron Allen for going above and beyond for our students. Mr. Miller was taped to the wall today at the assembly by 4th grade for raising the most for Hoops for Heart (American Heart Assoc.) and Coach Allen made all of his announcements wearing his beautiful red dress and will also be rewarding all students for their hard work with a dunk tank at the PTSO Fun Day on May 6th. 

Huge shout out to Cameron Loveall for raising $830...among all of his prizes he got to rename the PE Gym, so for the next year it will be called the LION CAVE. PTSO can't say this enough about all of our staff at Butler Elementary......you all are amazing and we appreciate all that you do for our students. You go above and beyond to encourage our kids, reward our kids, and show them what a community is all about. - Kacie Robey, Butler Elementary PTSO 




Obituary - Dr. Frank Schoolcraft

Dr. Frank Schoolcraft
Dr. Frank Schoolcraft, 88, Nevada, MO died on March 9, 2016 at Moore-Few Care Center where he was receiving rehabilitation to go home. He was born April 2, 1927 in Presque Isle, Maine to Earl and Helen Baker Schoolcraft. The family moved to Liverpool, N.Y. several years later where Frank attended Liverpool Public Schools graduating from high school in June of 1945. Immediately following graduation he was called to service in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his service he enrolled in Syracuse University graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 1951. He was a member of Phi Epsilon chapter of Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity. He later received his doctoral degree from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (Midwest University). He took a residency in anesthesiology in Flint, Michigan and practiced in San Antonio, Texas for several years. In 1969 he began a five year residency in psychiatry with the State of Missouri in St. Louis. He practiced at Nevada State Hospital until retirement.

In 1976 he married the love of his life, Gwen Roeder, in Nevada, Missouri and she survives of the home. In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Schoolcraft McCuen, a son-in-law, Doug McCuen, a grandson, Nicholas McCuen all of San Antonio, Texas, a brother, Paul Schoolcraft, D.D.S. of Denver, CO, a niece and nephew and cousins.

Frank received the Sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church shortly before his death.

Viewing and the rosary followed by the Mass of Christian Burial will begin at St. Mary Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on March 22, 2016. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church in his memory.


St. Clair County Sheriffs Office Arrest Warrants

On March 15, Timmie Green, 30, Osceola, was arrested on an active no bond parole violation warrant on an original class C felony charge of statutory sodomy-second degree.

On March 16, Travis Buttram, 24, Nixa, was arrested in St. Clair County on a Henry County warrant for failing to appear in court on a citation for failing to display plates. Bond is set at $145 cash or surety. The arrest was made after a traffic stop was initiated on Third Street, Lowry City, on a vehicle Buttram was a passenger in.

On March 17, David Journot, 28, Lamar, was arrested on four St. Clair County warrants for failing to appear in court on misdemeanor charges. Journot is charged with driving while revoked/suspended, failing to register motor vehicle, failing to maintain financial responsibility, and failing to wear a seatbelt. Total bond is set at $1,193.

Montrose man arrested in St. Clair County

On March 16, Mathew Robertson, 29, Montrose, Missouri ( formerly of Butler) was arrested on a St. Clair County warrant for probation violation on two original class C felony charges of passing bad checks. Bond is set at $10,000 cash only. 

The warrant was issued in July 2015 and the original charges stems from incidents in July of 2013 and August of 2014.




City of Butler flushing hydrants

The City of Butler will be flushing hydrants in all areas South of Ohio Street starting April 6TH and 7th, 2016 and continuing again on April 13th and 14th, 2016. Flushing hydrants are a routine maintenance activity of the Water Distribution Department and Fire Department. This work will occur mainly during the late evening and overnight hours for the convenience of our customers and will be primarily Wednesdays and Thursdays. This work should take approximately two weeks.

The residents in this area may experience some rusty water and should exercise caution when washing white fabrics. If you notice any staining of white fabrics, do not dry the material but repeat the wash cycle.

If you experience stained fabrics, contact the City office at 679-4182 during normal business hours or the Butler Police Department at 679-6131 after hours and on weekends and we can provide you with bottles of stain remover.
