Sheriff's statement goes viral
Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson recently posted on Facebook that in light of recent national violence, he was going to temporarily suspend the charging of fees for citizens of Bates County who would like to receive their concealed carry permit.
And it went from there- from local news sources to Kansas city TV stations, then some of the national news outlets throughout the country.
While making headlines certainly wasn't his intention, in fact he seemed a little humbled by all the attention- Anderson stands behind his offer to provide the classes free of charge.
As you might expect, all classes are full right now, but you can still put your name on the list. The Bates County Sheriff's Office web page and Facebook pages are listed below:

New Missouri law will require civics test, CPR for high schoolers
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon signed legislation to require high school students to pass a civics test and learn CPR. The legislation signed Wednesday requires high schoolers who start ninth grade after July 2017 to pass an exam similar to the U.S. citizenship test.
The measure also creates a pilot program for rating preschools based on quality. Nixon's office says Missouri previously was the only state to ban such a rating system.
Other provisions include mandated dyslexia screening in public schools beginning in fall 2018 and a requirement that public schools give students a chance every day to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Schools now must make time for the pledge once a week.
It also makes private schools eligible to participate in the A+ Scholarship program for community colleges.
