With each passing day, the old stacks get shorter, as special machines grind away concrete that soon will be all but a memory on the landscape. The removal of the stacks is part of ongoing renovations at the LaCygne KCP&L power plant and expected to be completed later this year.

Obituary - John Michael "Mike" Scott
John Michael "Mike" Scott, age 58, of Pleasanton, Kansas passed away July 14, 2016 at the St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, MO.The family will have a celebration of Mike's life at a later date. Contributions may be made in memory of Mike to the You Matter Foundation or Parkinson's Foundation.

Obituary - William Shadden Jr.
William Allen "Bear" Shadden Jr., age 51, Mound City, Kansas passed Wednesday July
13, 2016. He was born on June 26, 1965 at Fort Scott, Kansas the son of
William and Fanchion Joles Shadden. He graduated from Jayhawk Linn High School in the Class of 1983 and attended Fort Scott Community College. He married Nancy Martin. To this union two daughters were born. He worked for several years in law enforcement, including Pleasanton Chief of Police and Linn County Sheriff''s Deputy. Allen was a member of the Mound City Historical Society and Eastern Kansas Peace Officers Association.
He was a talented artist and photographer. He enjoyed fishing, camping and dirt track racing.
Allen is survived by his daughters, Kylie Shadden, and Emily Johnson and husband Clint, his father and mother, William " Bill" and Fanchion Shadden, and two grandchildren, Cooper and Piper.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2016 at the Mound City First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Church. Contributions are suggested to Shadden Funeral Expense Fund, c/o Schneider Funeral Home, Mound City Chapel.

Fail to register lands Butler man in jail
Sex offender at wrong address- new address is the Bates County Jail
On July 13, 2016 Christopher Forbes (DOB 1/28/1976) was arrested and charged with failing to register as a sex offender. Forbes was not living at the residence he was registered at. His bond was set at $5000.00 cash or surety. He is currently in custody at the Bates County Jail. Forbes is on parole and could possibly be facing additional charges for parole violation for this crime.

Breaking News Update: Two arrested after home burglary South of Ballard

The Deputy met with the victims who said when they returned home there was a white SUV parked in their driveway with a male subject sitting inside it. A white female then ran from the house and said their vehicle had broken down.

They gave Deputies consent to search the white SUV. Deputies located two laptops and chargers that were stolen from the residence on BB highway. There was also a prescription bottle found that had the victim’s name on the bottle.
Ferrel and Burrous were both taken into custody. A Deputy searched Ferrel’s person and located a syringe in his pocket as well as a large amount of jewelry. The syringe field tested positive for methamphetamine.
Ferrel and Burrous were transported to the Bates County Jail. They were both charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Except 35 grams or less of Marijuana. Their bond was set at $10,000.00 cash or surety. More charges are expected to be filed for burglary.
