Updated Obituary - Mary Irene (Lawson) Thayer

Mary Irene (Lawson) Thayer
The funeral service for Mrs. Thayer will be held at Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City, Missouri at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2016.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home preceding the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Appleton City Cemetery, Appleton City, Missouri.

Mary's wishes were that any memorial donations be made to the Navigators, and may be sent to the funeral home.

Mary grew up in Appleton City, attending Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg, where she studied business. Mary and William Deane Thayer, her husband of 51 years, were married on September 21, 1963 in Norfolk, Va. They were blessed with three children: Tim, David, and Becky. Bill passed away in October 2014.

Mary enjoyed her childhood on the farm in rural Appleton City and passed on that heritage to her family. There were many chickens, guineas, ducks, cows, sheep, cats and dogs that received her love and attention. Mary’s greatest love, however, was for her Saviour that changed her life as she accepted his free gift of salvation that day on the farm. From then on Mary’s life and testimony was to serve Him. She was always willing to share His love to anyone that was hurting, hungry, lonely, or just needed a friend. Christian Fellowship Church and the Navigators were an important part of her life. She had been a faithful member of both, choosing the verse which was her testimony for Christ: Colossians 2:7, “rooted and built up in Him, stablished in the faith as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” During her lifetime of being a devoted wife and mother, she spent countless hours helping her children with 4-H projects and guiding their steps toward adulthood. Mary and William were part of the 2:7 Bible Study and the International Student Ministry at CFC. Through the years she had led many women’s Bible studies in the community. If you knew Mary, you can be sure she prayed for you.

Preceding Mary in death were her parents, her husband, a brother John Lawson; sister Jeanette Fairburn; and brother-in-law Bob O’Reilly. Survivors include her three children: Timothy Deane Thayer (Barbara) Wilson, North Carolina, David Lawson Thayer (Cheryl) of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Rebecca Dianne Lipskoch (Les) of Mt. Vernon, Indiana; her grandchildren: Connor D, Brittany C. and Quentin E. Thayer, Paul W., David C. and Hannah Joy Thayer, CaSaundra K. Nathan L., Alisha M., Branden D., Joel C., and Kimberly D. Lipskoch; her siblings: Helen Romero (Harold) of Costa Mesa, California, Clyde Lawson (Selva) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mabel Brewer of Appleton City, Missouri, Lou Choat (Ken) of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Robert Lawson (Janice) of Ames, Iowa; one sister-in-law Janet O’Reilly of Boston, MA; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

You're not the only person on the road

One decision can change everything. Each day, lives are drastically changed or lost in preventable traffic crashes caused by someone's choice to drive while impaired. Drivers continue to choose to break the law by driving impaired, putting thousands of travelers at risk every day.

Holiday weekends bring a surge in impaired driving, so this year's Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over high-visibility operation will run Aug. 19 through the Labor Day holiday on Sept. 5.
Driving impaired isn't just about alcohol. A person could also be arrested for driving under the influence of illegal drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, other controlled substances or even prescription medication.

Statewide, law enforcement made 389 DWI arrests, 26 DUI drug arrests and 13 drug influence arrests during this campaign in August and September of 2015. Many substance-impaired drivers are under the age of 21. From 2013-2015, there were 53 fatal crashes and 144 serious injury crashes involving a substance-impaired driver under the age of 21 in Missouri. There were 64 people killed and 202 seriously injured in these crashes.

“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign to begin Friday, Aug. 19

Sheriff Scott Keeler announced deputies will be out in force as part of the annual nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown to reduce substance–impaired driving fatalities beginning this Friday.

The crackdown, which will include high-visibility enforcement throughout St. Clair County, will run from August 19-September 5, 2016. The sheriff said deputies will be aggressively looking for substance–impaired drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving impaired.

Although it is illegal to drive drunk many people across the nation get behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol. The latest statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration underscore the serious nature of the nation’s continuing drunk driving epidemic.

“Every year, about one third of all motor vehicle traffic deaths involve one or more substance- impaired drivers or motorcycle operators,” said the sheriff. “Preliminary data indicates in 2015, 196 people were killed and 663 seriously injured on Missouri’s roadways in crashes that involved at least one substance-impaired driver.”

The sheriff noted the August/Labor Day Weekend holiday is particularly dangerous. During the August/Labor Day weekend holiday August 21 – September 7, 2015, five (5) people were killed and fifty-three (53) seriously injured involving at least one substance-impaired driver.

Sheriff Keeler noted that being arrested for driving under the influence of any substance brings a wide range of negative consequences into one’s life. Substance–impaired drivers face jail time, loss of their driver licenses, and steep financial consequences such as higher insurance rates, attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job. When family, friends and co-workers find out, violators also often face tremendous personal embarrassment.

“Driving while impaired is simply not worth the risk,” said the sheriff. “Don’t take the chance.”

Neighbor Reports Burglary in Progress, Three Arrests Result, Property Recovered in Henry County

Dustin Bertrand
According to Sheriff Kent Oberkrom, three persons were arrested on 24-hour investigation for burglary and stealing charges, in connection with the burglary of a residence, which was discovered by a neighbor while the crime was in progress, in the 500 block of NW Hwy 7, near Clinton, on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. Shortly after 12:00 p.m., Corporal Zach Sebree was dispatched to NW Hwy O, as an alert neighbor had contacted and reported witnessing a residential burglary which was in progress, to Henry County Central Communications.

Once the suspects realized that they had been discovered at the residence by the reporting neighbor, they immediately departed the scene, by vehicle. The suspect vehicle fled the address south on NW Hwy 7, turning north onto NW Hwy O. The reporting neighbor remained on the telephone with Central Communications and continued to follow the suspect vehicle, while reporting its current location as the vehicle continued to flee from the scene. Cpl. Sebree located the suspect vehicle in the 600 block of NW Hwy O, making contact with the vehicle’s occupants.

A search of the vehicle was conducted, which led to the discovery of property which was stolen from the residence on HW Hwy 7. Subsequently, all of the vehicle’s occupants were taken into custody by Cpl. Sebree at the scene and transported to the Henry County Detention Center. Arrested on 24-hour investigation for second degree burglary, stealing, and possession of burglary tools, was Dustin Bertrand, age 21, of Edwards, Anna Mikov, age 24, of Clinton, and Chasten Bax, age 19, who reported being homeless.

“While property crimes are reported to our office on nearly a daily basis, being alert to the suspicious or unusual behavior of persons, as well as unfamiliar vehicles, and reporting these suspicious activities, still tends to be one of the best tools we can rely on, when solving these types of crimes”, Sheriff Oberkrom stated.

“Please continue to report any suspicious activity when it’s observed or is occurring, to your local law enforcement agency”, Sheriff Oberkrom concluded.
