Obituary - Julia Consalus

Julia Consalus
Julia Ann (Atkins) Consalus, 88, died peacefully on August 17, 2016 at The Stuart House in Centralia, Missouri. She was born April 8, 1928 in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Charles Wesley Atkins and Margaret (Whitsett) Atkins. The family moved to Clinton in the 1930's, and Julie remained there until 2007 when her health forced a move to be nearer her children.

Julia Ann graduated valedictorian from Clinton High School in 1946. During her college years at the University of Central Missouri, she was a member and national officer of Sigma Sigma Sigma social fraternity, was elected homecoming queen, and in 1950, was selected to receive the Charno Award for the most outstanding senior woman.

Julia Ann taught for 18 years in the Clinton Public Schools and was a lifelong member and an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton. In the church, Julia Ann was active in the choir and in Presbyterian Women and, in 1991, was a delegate to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, USA. Professionally, she was a member of Kappa Omicron Pi, a Home Economics fraternity, and Delta Kappa Gamma, a sorority for women educators. Her college continued to hold an important place in her life as she received her Master's Degree in Home Economics in 1969, served on the UCM Alumni Board, the UCM Foundation Board and the KMOS/KCMW Advisory Board. In the community, she enjoyed membership in P.E.O. and DAR and, in 1986, served as the general chairman of the Clinton Sesquicentennial Celebration.

On June 9, 1950, Julia Ann married Eugene Russell Consalus, who preceded her in death in 2007. They were parents of four children, all of whom survive: Susan (Lewis) Miller of Boonville, Mo., Karen (Ed) Price of Sunrise Beach, Mo., Linda (Mike) Sharp of Greenville, South Carolina, and John (Liz) Consalus of Springfield, Mo. Also surviving are a sister, Virginia Atkins Lynd of Prairie Village, Kansas, grandchildren, James (Emily) Price, Eric (Hayley) Martin, Christopher Consalus, Abigail (Chris) Imming, Andrew (Mayeli) Price, and Matthew Sharp; and great-grandchildren, Jillian and Cooper Price and Claire Imming.

Interment will be private. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., at the Henry County Museum DeLozier Building, northwest corner of the Clinton Square. Legal fights over Missouri tobacco tax hike continue

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri judge is weighing whether to remove from the Nov. 8 ballot a proposed cigarette tax hike to benefit early childhood programs.

Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem heard lawyers' arguments Friday in three cases challenging the proposal.

If approved by voters, the measure would raise Missouri's lowest-in-the-nation cigarette tax from 17 to 77 cents a pack and impose additional fees on some brands.

Attorneys for convenience and tobacco store owners against the measure told Beetem that a change in the summary after petitions were gathered should invalidate those signatures. Secretary of State Jason Kander put the measure on the ballot despite the change. Attorneys for Kander and the initiative backers say it's the will of voters who signed the petition to keep it on the ballot.
