National Child Passenger Safety Week

JEFFERSON CITY – Is your child in the right safety seat? The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety wants to ensure all caregivers of young children know the importance of buckling children in an appropriate child restraint.

In 2015, four children were killed and 61 suffered injuries as occupants in motor vehicle crashes in Missouri. Thirteen percent of these children killed or seriously injured were not restrained in a car seat or safety belt.

Missouri law requires all children under eight to be in an appropriate child safety seat or booster seat, unless:

· They are at least 80 pounds; or
· They are at least 4’9” tall.

Motorists can expect increased enforcement of Missouri’s child seat safety laws throughout this campaign.

“The goal is to make sure all parents and caregivers are correctly securing all children in the right car restraints for their age and size,” said Bill Whitfield, chair of the executive committee for the coalition. “Safety seats prevent serious injuries and could save your child’s life.”

Child safety seat technicians will provide education and car seat inspections at locations across the state. In central Missouri, you can participate in the Roll & Read event at Ellis-Porter Riverside Park on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

A Car-Seat-Check will also be conducted by the Jefferson City Fire Department at the event. A list of car seat inspection stations and locations across the state can be found at seatcheck.org. Appointments may be necessary.

Also, remember that car seats also have expiration dates. Due to the extreme heat and cold that they’re subject to, they can break down over time. Used car seats can also be dangerous, especially if you don’t know the seat’s history.

“We urge everyone to get their child safety seats inspected,” said Whitfield. “When it comes to the safety of a child, there is no room for mistakes.”

Former St. Clair County sheriff’s deputy received three years of probation

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A former St. Clair County sheriff’s deputy received three years of probation last week for helping a jail inmate file for unemployment benefits.

A judge also ordered year Michael Mullaney to pay $898 in restitution to West Virginia, where the inmate applied for benefits.

A federal grand jury indicted Mullaney and inmate William Parker for felony counts of stealing public funds in December 2014 for a scheme in which Parker filled out an application for unemployment benefits and Mullaney helped send it over the internet. Parker was in jail after being charged with first-degree burglar in February 2010, when he made the application.

The unemployment aid application required Parker to certify that he was available and willing to accept full-time work, which was a lie because Parker was in the St. Clair County jail in Osceola. Investigators said the scheme netted Parker $5,388.

The charge in the indictment could have carried a prison sentence up to 20 years. Instead, Mullaney pleaded guilty in May for a misdemeanor and the U.S. Attorney’s Office dropped the felony charge. U.S. Magistrate David Rush sentenced him to three years of probation and ordered him to pay $898, part of the money that Parker fraudulently received on a debit card from West Virginia.

Parker pleaded guilty last February for the scheme. He also received three years of federal probation last Aug. 17, and also had to pay $898 in restitution. He served five years of state probation for the burglary from 2010 to 2015.

Oklahoma, EPA shuts down 32 wells in new earthquake-prone area

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - State and federal regulators say 32 disposal wells in northeastern Oklahoma must shut down because they are too near a newly discovered fault line that produced the state's strongest earthquake on record.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission said Monday that 27 wells under its jurisdiction would cease operations, along with five wells in Osage County, which is covered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rules.

A magnitude 5.8 quake at Pawnee, Oklahoma, on Sept. 3 shook several states, including Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. Shortly afterward, geologists speculated on whether the temblor occurred on a previously unknown fault.

In a standard energy field practice, wastewater from oil and gas production is injected deep into the earth. The high pressure has been blamed for triggering an increase in earthquakes.
Regulators shuttered wells within 10 miles of the new fault.
