The construction crew set up shop earlier this week and have already begun making cuts in the sidewalk.

Soon enough, the sidewalks on Main Street Pleasanton will look a lot different!

Thank you for all your hard work!

Proposed tobacco tax hike goes to Missouri Supreme Court

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) An attorney defending a proposal to raise Missouri tobacco taxes for early childhood programs says taking it off the ballot would violate backers' constitutional right to use the initiative petition process.

Attorney Jane Dueker argued Thursday to state Supreme Court judges that it should go to voters Nov. 8, despite concerns that it made it on the ballot after using a misleading summary.

An appeals court has ruled that the short description of the proposal given to petition signers was unfair.

The measure would hike cigarette taxes from 17 cents to 77 cents a pack by 2020 and create a 67-cent-per-pack "equity" fee on off-brand cigarettes that would increase annually for inflation.

Attorney Chuck Hatfield told judges to kick it off the ballot. He says the original summary was misleading.

U.S. regulators recall of 1 million Samsung Note 7 phones:

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) - U.S. regulators are issuing an official recall of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 phone because of the risk that its batteries can explode or catch fire.

Samsung already has voluntary recalled the devices, but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is stepping in on a formal recall.

Samsung says it has confirmed a few dozen instances of the problem, out of 2.5 million phones sold. Samsung promised replacement devices, but that was put on hold while regulators reviewed the situation.

The recall comes at a crucial time for Samsung, as its rival Apple just announced its own latest versions of the iPhone. The Note series is one of Samsung's most expensive, and demand for the phone had been high.

MORE WEIRD WILDLIFE:

This porcupine was recently found dead along the shoulder of Highway 54, two miles west of Collins in St. Clair County.

Based on its "fresh" condition when found, it had likely been run over the night before or early the morning it was found.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says they have no evidence of an established population in Missouri, but we get occasional reports of "porkys."

From the desk of Greg Mullinax

With all the negative campaign tactics we are seeing on the NATIONAL level, I'm disappointed to now see advertisements in this Bates County Coroner's race turn negative with untrue suppositions and a hurtful insinuation. Will my campaign respond in this way? An eye for an eye, you might say?

It will absolutely not. I will continue to treat each person with the dignity and respect they deserve, regardless of their affiliation. That is what my level of experience dealing with grieving families has taught me.

Sorry folks. No negative attacks from me. You can hold me to a higher standard than that.

Sincerely,

Greg D. Mullinax
