Missouri’s annual ‘ShakeOut’ earthquake drill will be held Oct. 20

Missourians encouraged to ‘Drop, Cover, Hold On’ during statewide drill ..

JEFFERSON CITY – Registration is open for the 2016 Great Central U. S. “ShakeOut” earthquake drill on Oct. 20. More than 450,000 Missourians are already registered to participate in the annual drill, which teaches people how to protect themselves in an earthquake. More than two million people are signed up in 14 central U.S. states that could be impacted by a major New Madrid Seismic Zone earthquake.

At exactly 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, participants will practice “Drop, Cover, Hold On”:
  • DROP to your hands and knees, under a table or a desk if you can;
  • COVER your head and neck with your hands and arms; and
  • HOLD ON until the shaking stops.

Experts say Drop, Cover, Hold On is the best way to protect yourself from falling debris, which is the most likely cause of injury during an earthquake in developed nations with modern building standards.

“It’s very important for people to immediately know what to do to protect themselves because earthquakes occur without warning,” said State Emergency Management Agency Director Ron Walker. “If you and your family know in advance how react and take cover, it could prevent serious injury.”

To sign up for the ShakeOut, visit www.shakeout.org/centralus. Once registered, participants receive regular updates on the drill, as well as information on earthquake preparedness and safety. The ShakeOut website also includes many resources, including manuals, videos, audio drill broadcasts and earthquake scenarios.

From 1811-12, the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which includes southeast Missouri, produced some of the largest earthquakes ever in the continental U.S. A major earthquake in this area could result in damage in much of southern and eastern Missouri, including the St. Louis area.

Altona 4-H Club news

The Altona 4-H meeting was called to order by vice-president, Case Doody. Case led us in the pledges to the American and 4-H flags. Secretary, Kameran Collier, called the roll. We had 21 members and 4 joining members present. Kameran read the minutes from the June meeting. Hunter Self made a motion to accept the minutes as read, Haley Bolling seconded. Motion carried. Trevor Newport gave the treasurer’s report. Lucas Rowe made the motion to accept the report, Clint Cumpton seconded. Motion carried. Clay and Clint Cumpton presented the club a bill for mowing. Haley Bolling motioned to pay the bill McKenzie Self seconded. Motion carried. Trevor then gave a report on our annual Adrian Antique Tractor ice cream and cobbler fund raiser.

We had a pretty decent year. We are going to ask the tractor show board if we can have our booth moved full time up to where the pulling track is rather than be set-up a half day down by the railroad and then moving up to the pulling track. The Doody family will take care of this request. Todd Frankenfield asked how everyone did at the fair this year. Our club was well represented not only locally, but at other fairs, Ozark , and State fairs. Our members brought home lots of grand and reserve grand in livestock and in the building. We also had an overall high point winner and a princess candidate winner.

Seeing no other old business, Case moved on to new business. It has been requested that we have 2 meetings in October; a regular meeting and a short meeting with weenie roast and maybe a hayride. Hunter Self made a motion to hold two meetings, a regular one on October 12th and then a weenie roast at the Doody’s farm on October 15th. Jessie Lowe seconded. Motion approved. We also held a discussion on participating in the county National 4-H Week window display contest. We decided this would be a fun way to get our club name and the 4-H name out in the community. Kirsten Collier is going to check at a couple of businesses on Adrian Main Street to see if they would let us use their window. National 4-H Week is October 2 – 8. We also voted to have a Thanksgiving dinner at our November meeting. Kristy Hale, Erin Newport, and Kirsten Collier will be the organizing committee. They started a sign-up sheet to pass around. Each family is asked to bring two items.

 Baxter Lowe made a motion to continue having Clay and Clint Cumpton mow the yard around the club house for the next year. Lucas Rowe seconded. Motion carried. Next, we elected officers for the 2016/2017 4-H year. Our slate of officers will be: President – Case Doody, Vice-President – Hunter Self, Secretary – Kameran Collier, Treasurer – Jessie Lowe, Reporter – Clay Cumpton, County Council Representatives – Baxter Lowe and Isabelle Lowe. Club leader, Todd Frankenfield, announced his retirement from being club leader. We thanked him for his service. Brenda Doody spoke on enrollments and deadlines. Deana Self passed around volunteer leader background screening forms and information about how to re-enroll and enroll in the online system. Meeting adjourned.
