Papinville Annual Picnic set for September 24th

The Papinville Historical and Cemetery Association has their plans set for their 25th Annual Picnic. Saturday, September 24, 2016. Activities will begin at 1:00 p.m.

This year’s wagon tour will be taking you to the Drainage Ditch and giving you the history of when and how it was dug and other interesting facts. Tickets will be $4.00 with children under six $2.00. First tour will begin in the museum at 1:00 and the ride will leave promptly at 1:10. If there is enough interest a second ride may be scheduled. There will be regular wagon rides during the afternoon for $2.00 per person.

The wonderful music by the Heartfelt Band will begin about 1:30.

If you wish to enter the pie contest, do so in the kitchen before 3:00 p.m. Following awarding of prizes, the pies will be auctioned at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Other activities that will be announced during the afternoon to be enjoyed by adults and children will be: cake walk, silent auction, duck pond and children’s coloring contest and craft. Don Tiller, area conservation agent will be present with a display for all to enjoy. The Papinville School and Museum will be open for viewing and possible tours will be scheduled. You may purchase tickets for all these activities plus books and other items under the tent outside the museum. Tickets on the Queen size quilt will be available at the tent. 


Buffet meal will be served at approximately 5:00. Silent auction will end and quilt will be given away at 6:00.

Should you wish to bring a dessert of any kind it would be appreciated. Let them know if you would like your cake to be used on the dessert table or at the cake walk and have it in a disposable pan or container.

If you would like to donated items for the silent auction, that also would be appreciated.

Now there is just one other thing to say, “Bring your lawn chair and come and enjoy music, activities, visiting with old and new friends, learn about history and above all a good meal. See you on the September 24th at the Annual Papinville Picnic.

Nevada man arrested for driving while intoxicated

On 9/17/16 around 12:48am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Vernon County arrested 71 year old Eldon K Bobbett of Nevada, Missouri.

Mr. Bobbett was arrested for 1.) Driving While Intoxicated.

He was booked into the Vernon County Jail and is currently listed as bondable.

Adrian woman arrested on probation violation warrant

On 9/15/16 the Nevada Police Department executed a warrant and  arrested 33 year old Natasha Perkins of Adrian, Missouri.

She was arrested on 1.) Probation Violation Warrant - Original charge of a Class C Felony Receiving Stolen property which she was sentenced to 5 years supervised probation, which was later revoked.

Natasha Perkins was booked into the Vernon County Jail and placed on a $5,000 cash only bond that is to be delivered to the Bates County Sheriff's Office.

An Adrian woman was booked at the Vernon County Jail on a probation violation.

33-year-old Natasha Perkins was booked at the county jail Thursday on the probation violation warrant out of Bates County. According to court docket information, Perkins was originally charged with receiving stolen property, a class C felony, in October of 2011, and was sentenced to five years of supervised probation, which was later revoked, and the she was again sentenced to five years of supervised probation in July of 2015. The probation violation was filed on August 29, and the warrant was issued on August 30, and executed by the Nevada Police Department on Thursday.

The warrant holds a $5,000 cash only bond, that is to be delivered to the Bates County Sheriff's office.

Update :Head on crash injures three on West 52 Highway

On 9/16/16 around 2:15pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Butler Fire Department and Bates County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two vehicle head on accident on Missouri West 52 Highway at City Lake Road.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2008 Ford driven by 25 year old Justin E. McGuire of Lees Summit, Missouri Struck the 2006 Ford driven by 81 year old Bernard J.Lickteig of Burlington, Kansas head on.

Justin E. McGuire sustained serious injuries in this accident and a  passenger in his vehicle 16 year old Arlis S. McGuire of Schell City, Missouri sustained minor injuries also, both were transported by ambulance to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Mr. Lickteig sustained moderate injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene by Douty"s Tow of Butler, Missouri.

Obituary - James R. “Red” Stradley

James R. “Red” Stradley
James R. “Red” Stradley, age 83, a resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Thursday, September 15th at Ft. Scott Mercy Hospital. He was born on March 18, 1933, in Kansas City, MO, the son of Jesse and Addie Michaels Stradley. He graduated from Fort Scott High School with the class of 1951. Red served 17 years in the military with the Air Force and Navy Air providing air rescue. He married Avis Boyd on December 2, 1966, in Fort Scott. He owned and operated I.T.C.O. farm supply store and worked as a custodian for U234 School District. Red enjoyed shooting, square dancing with the Iza Stompers Club, taking part in Civil War reenactments, and helping with countless Memorial Day and Veterans Day services reciting the Gettysburg Address and Rugged Old Flag. He played violin and harmonica with Fuss and Feathers and the Red Garter Saloon performances for 25 years. He served as Master of the Masonic Lodge and as Worthy Patron for Eastern Star. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., serving as Chaplain, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife Avis of the home; step-son J.L. Allen and wife Shirley, Pleasanton, KS; step-daughters Avis Darlene Greim and husband Irvin, Gainesville, FL, Joyce Elain Steuer and husband Ron, Dubuque, IA, Dianna June Pauzauskie, Gainesville, FL, Carolyn Joann Callow and husband Rick, Blue Springs, MO, and Linda Sue Morris and husband Mark, Arcadia, KS; nieces Jean Kaye Cook, Bradenton, FL, and Linda Graden and husband Gary, Keller, TX; and nephew, Rick McHenry, MN. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie Jennings and Opal McHenry.

Rev. Dr. Jared Witt will conduct funeral services at 11:30 AM Tuesday, September 20th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post #1165 V.F. W. The family will receive friends at the Chapel from 10:30 prior to the service. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.
