Nevada Police Department taking back unwanted drugs

On October 26th the Nevada Police Department, working in partnership with the Vernon County Youth Task Force is hosting two prescription medication collection events as part of Red Ribbon Week.

Nevada Police will be providing a drive through collection site in the parking lot of the First Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Olive and Hickory.

The hours for this collection site are from 7am to 9am and then again from 2pm to 4pm.

Our goal with this collection site is to provide a convenient way for parents to dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications while dropping off or picking up kids at the nearby schools.

The Nevada Police Department will also be providing a collection site in the lobby of our station from 8am to 5pm. These services are free and anonymous, no questions asked.

These initiatives address a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

For more information on this program contact Officer Justin Varner of the Nevada Police Department.
