Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area Holds Annual Banquet

Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area held their annual banquet today in the historic Elms Hotel. 

Those representing Bates County were Kay Caskey (Freedom'sFrontier Trustee), Casey Koehn (Butler City Administrator), Donna Morris (Bates County Victims Advocate), Donna Gregory, Chris Wimsatt, and Peggy Buhr (Bates County Museum). Poplar Heights Farm was represented by Melissa Phillips and Gail Tiller. /// 

Bates County Museum Director Peggy Buhr received the Billings Most Valuable Partner Award for her years of work in promoting the history of the region and for ongoing work in highlighting the fascinating stories of Bates County and the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area.

Stolen vehicle in Rich Hill

The Bates County Sheriffs Office along with the Rich Hill Police Department are attempting to locate a gold in color 2004 Dodge 1500 king cab truck that was stolen this evening from a residence in Rich Hill.

The truck is said to have a Missouri License Plate number of 5WR-733 and also a red, white and blue Rich Hill Tigers sticker in the back window.

Updated Obituary - Betty Jean Hocker

Betty Jean Hocker
Betty Jean Hocker, 85, Freeman, Missouri, died Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Eufaula Manor in Eufaula, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2016 at the Freeman Baptist Church, Freeman, Missouri. Burial will be in Freeman Cemetery with a fellowship gathering to follow at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Freeman Baptist Church, P.O. Box 187, Freeman, MO 64746 or to Freeman Cemetery, c/o Kenny Duncan, P.O. Box 125, Freeman, MO 64746.

Betty was born October 31, 1931 in Freeman, Missouri, the daughter of Raymond and Mary Florence (Cockrell) Weller. She attended Zion #87 rural school from 1937-1945 and after 8th grade graduation, she attended Harrisonville School and graduated in 1949. She was a lifetime resident of Cass County, Missouri.

After graduation, Betty taught school at four Cass County rural schools, Oak Grove #83 (1950-1951), Wolfe #91 (1951-1954), Belle Plain #61 (1963-1964), and Mount Zion #63 (1964-1967). She then taught at East Lynne Schools for many years, and then substituted for Cass-Midway Schools, retiring in 2000. She married Robert William Hocker on December 23, 1950 in Drexel, Missouri and enjoyed their life together farming.

Betty enjoyed gardening, volunteering for a number of various organizations, reading, traveling to see family, scrapbooking, and her church. She especially enjoyed having the family gathered at her house for the holidays, especially for Christmas. She also was in charge of the Freeman Community Flower/Donation fund. She was a member of Freeman Baptist Church and served as Sunday School Superintendant, Vacation Bible School leader and teacher; Freeman Community 4-H Club leader; Freeman Cemetery Treasurer; Harrisonville Hospital Women’s Auxiliary and served as treasurer, secretary, and president; and was a member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO).

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 57 years, Robert, on March 7, 2008. Betty is survived by two sons, William R. Hocker and wife, Kathy, Towanda, Kansas, and Chester W. Hocker and wife, Susan, Overland Park, Kansas; one daughter, Wilma J. Bright and husband, Larry, Eufaula, Oklahoma; one sister, Wanda Baze and husband, Sam, Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Sara Hocker, Sean Hocker, Jesse Woodward, Amy Hocker, and Larry Bright, Jr.; 4 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Obituary - Dennis A. Pendrak

Dennis A. Pendrak
Dennis A. Pendrak, 68, Nevada, MO, passed from this life on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO following a lengthy illness. Dennis was born on January 15, 1948 in Arkansas City, KS to A.F. “Del” and Erma Jean (Cassady) Pendrak. On July 29, 1972 he was united in marriage to Lois A. Lewis in Arkansas City and she survives of the home.

Dennis attended school in Kansas and graduated from Arkansas City High School Class of 1966. Following high school he attended Pittsburg State University where he ran track. Dennis graduated from there in 1970 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education. He then attended graduate school at Wichita State University and while there assisted with the track team. Dennis earned his Mastor’s Degree in 1975. Dennis came to Nevada in 1977 where he began employment at Nevada R-5 School as the Physical Education teacher. He was the head track coach for 15 years and also coached boys and girls tennis from 2003-2007. In 2007 Dennis retired after 30 years of service. His memberships include the First Presbyterian Church in Nevada.

In addition to his wife Lois, he is survived by three daughters, Jan Hoth and her husband Nick, St. Louis, MO, Gina Pendrak, Joplin, and Lisa Nolan and her husband Brandon, Wathena, KS; 2 grandchildren, Elaine Hoth, and Ann Hoth; his mother, E.J. Pendrak, Arkansas City; one sister, Susan Metzen, Independence, MO; one brother, Brad Pendrak, Derby, KS; several nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by his father Del in 1989.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church in Nevada with Rev. Greg Ferree officiating. Interment will be held in Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City at a later time. Friends may call at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO from now and until the hour of service.

Those who wish may contribute in his memory to the National Kidney Foundation or the PSU Track and Field Scholarship Fund in c/o Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Deborah "Debby" Jo Douglass
Deborah "Debby" Jo Douglass, of Independence, Missouri was born July 9, 1953 in Harrisonville, Missouri the daughter of Franklin David and Betty Jo (Sloan) Sulser. She departed this life on Monday, November 7, 2016 at her home surrounded by love and family at the age of 63 years, 3 months and 29 days.

On February 14, 1987, Debby was united in marriage to Darrel Wayne Douglass in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Debby was a CNA for several nursing homes and was also a wonderful minister's wife helping wherever she could. She was a 1971 graduate of the Harrisonville High School and was a lifelong Harrisonville resident until she moved to Independence in 2012. Debby enjoyed doing arts and crafts, cooking, loved to travel and investing time in her children and grandchildren. She was a charitable person and gave to many different organizations.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Gina Lee Hayes; a brother, Franklin David Sulser; a sister, Theresa Gay.

She is survived by her husband, Darrel W. Douglass of the home; three children, Jody Hayes, Louisburg, Kansas, Jesse Hayes and wife, Tabitha, Raymore, Missouri, Abey Douglass, Farmington, Missouri; 4 grandchildren, Emma Lee Hayes, Tucker Spears, Sophia Hayes and Isabelle Hayes; a brother, David Sulser, Garden City, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, Missouri.

Kelli Adcock Huddleston age 34 of Butler, Missouri passed away on Thursday November 10th,2016 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO

Funeral Services for Kelli will be held on Wednesday November 16th.

A visitation will start at 10am with the funeral service to follow at 11am at the Last Harvest Cowboy Church located at 219 South Main Street Butler MO.


Kelli is survived by her mother; Lori Adcock of Butler; four brothers: Kevin, Kenneth, Kelvin and Klayton Adcock; five sisters Karla, Kimberly, and Karen Adcock, Kristy Ratliff, and Kathy Foster.

Update: Butler woman injured in early morning Bates County rollover accident

On 11/10/16 around 7:10am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies and Bates County EMS all responded to a one vehicle rollover accident on F Highway and County Road NW 9001 in rural Bates County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2000 Saturn driven by 23 year old Ashley M. Baldwin of Butler, Missouri ran off the right side of the roadway, driver over corrected causing the vehicle to travel off the right side of the roadway before striking a utility pole and overturning.

Ashley M. Baldwin sustained moderate injuries in this accident and she was transported by ambulance to the Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by Douty's Tow of Butler, Missouri.
