Flowers in December?

A frost flower is formed when thin layers of ice are extruded from long-stemmed plants in autumn or early winter. The thin layers of ice are often formed into exquisite patterns that curl into "petals" that resemble flowers.

The frost flower 'growing season' is usually pretty short- the formation of this icy beauty only happens during a short period where plants still have a reasonable amount of stored moisture, while temps hover near the freezing point.

And thanks to a warm Fall, we are just now beginning to see this phenomenon around Bates County; usually frost flowers can be found in mid to late October.
