Sheriff on a Shelf pays visit to Butler Elementary today

Some fun and frivolity was enjoyed by all today as the (now famous) Sheriff on a Shelf paid a visit to the Butler Elementary School.

As seen here, the elf him self offered proper eating techniques, how to correctly stand in line and more.

Rodger Cecil 
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rodger Cecil. Rodger was the City of Butler Animal Control Officer and a member of the Butler Fire Department.

Rodger passed away today after a brief unknown illness. We would like to send our deepest sympathies to his wife Brenda and his family.


We ask you to continue to keep this family in your prayers and thoughts.

Winter Weather Advisory extended through this evening

What you can't see may become a problem after nightfall- black ice.

You might want to reconsider plans for this evening and even through tomorrow as the National Weather Service has now extended the Winter Weather Advisory through 9 pm this evening; and tomorrow morning is predicted to be 'slickery' (no, not an official NWS term).

Updated Obituary - Steven Wayne Pryor

Steven Wayne Pryor
Steven Wayne Pryor, 58, Nevada, MO passed from this life on Tuesday, December 14, 2016 at his home in Nevada. Steven was born June 10, 1958 in Nevada, MO to James Edward and Beverly Fern (Crump) Pryor.

Steven was raised in Nevada and attended school there, graduating from Nevada High School. Following high school he began working as a painter for CBI. During his employment with them he traveled all over the United States and abroad working on various projects. Steve enjoyed NASCAR, playing pool, listening to music, and just being goofy. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and brother. Steve loved his dog Chumley, his family, and was loved by his family, “To the moon and back.”

Survivors include four daughters, Stephanie Pryor, Springfield, Jamie Pryor, Springfield, Lisa Pryor, Springfield, Ashley Pryor, Arma, KS; grandchildren, Jaden, Trystan, Kaelyn, Mason, Jeanette, Jackie, Bragston, Madison, Macy, Maddex, Chance, Jace, Justyn, Felyx, October, Ravyn, William, Allanah, Emma; two step-children, Amber Braun (Joseph), Burgess, MO, Josh Smith (Brittney), Osage City, KS; one sister, Susie Pritchett (Randy), Nevada; four brothers, Jimmie Pryor (Becky), Nevada, Tracy Pryor, Nevada, Doug Pryor, Columbia, MO, Greg Pryor (Cathy), Nevada; nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until service time on Tuesday.



Memorials are suggested to the Vernon County Cancer Relief in c/o Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Obituary - Lester Shaw

Lester Shaw, age 98, Pleasanton, Kansas passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2016. 

Funeral services are pending at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel.

Deepwater man arrested in St.Clair County

Mark Buce
On Dec. 14, Mark Buce, 28, Deepwater, was arrested on a St. Clair County warrant charging him with class C felony receiving stolen property and class A misdemeanor resisting/interfering with arrest detention or stop. Bond is set at $15,000 cash or surety.

The charges stem from an incident the previous day when a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on a pickup truck near NE 501 Road and Highway CC, Osceola. When the deputy activated emergency lights the truck slowed down like it was going to stop then accelerated and continued on NE 501 Road. The truck travelled for approximately one mile before stopping. Buce, who was driving the vehicle, was taken into custody. A check of the vehicle revealed it as stolen from Benton Coun

Crews are working on a water main break near High
and Ohio streets in Butler -staff photo
Crews from the City of Butler are currently working to fix a water main break just north of Ohio on High street. 

The repair may take an undetermined amount of time, expect some traffic congestion on High street if you plan to pick up your children at the Butler elementary school
