An important note from the Bates County Collector's office

Because the last day of the year is a Saturday the Bates County Collectors office will be open on Saturday December 31st until noon. We will also accept post mark for the 31st but be sure that it gets postmarked the 31st as most post offices have a cutoff on the last day of the month and any after that will be postmarked after the first. To be sure just mail it on Friday the 30th. Also as indicated on your tax bill we will not accept phoned credit or debit card payments after Dec. 20th as it holds up the lines in the collectors office but you can still make such payments by walking in to the collectors office. As you know the collectors office is extremely busy this time of year but we still want to wish everyone a very blessed Christmas.

More details released in police chase that ended near Adrian

On December 17th, Deputies were asked to assist Butler PD regarding a vehicle that was failing to yield. The Deputy joined the pursuit at the intersection of County Road 41 and County Road 11002. The pursuit proceeded north on Old 71 Hwy where the vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at Old 71 and Main. The vehicle continued north where it crossed the center line several times. At the S curves on AA highway the vehicle passed another car in the opposing lane of traffic and crossed the double yellow line. At the intersection of NW County Road 15502 and County Road 701 the suspect failed to maintain the road and slid sideways into a tree. He then continued north and failed to negotiate a sharp turn. He then drove off into a field just south of County Road 16502. The vehicle became stuck in the field. The suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot. A Bates County K9 unit was called to the scene to assist in searching for the suspect. He was later found and arrested near a fence line north west of where he left his vehicle.

Michael Strup

The suspect, identified as Michael R. Strup (DOB 1/13/1979), was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital where he was treated for injuries he sustained from being bitten by the K9.

Strup had 4 warrants from City of Butler for Failure to Appear. The total bond amount on those warrants was $900.00 cash or surety.

Strup was charged in Bates County for Resisting or Interfering with Arrest. The bond was set at $5000.00 cash or surety. He is currently being held in the Bates County Jail.

Traffic stop in Amsterdam leads to drug arrest

Valerie Lezer
On December 15th, a Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that failed to stop at a stop sign in Amsterdam, MO. While the Deputy was speaking to the driver of the vehicle, the Deputy could smell a strong marijuana odor coming from the car. The driver gave the Deputy consent to search the vehicle. While searching the vehicle the Deputy located a cloth bag that contained two glass pipes and a needle that had a white clear substance in it. A passenger in the vehicle identified the pipes as hers. The Deputy field tested on of the pipes and it tested positive for Methamphetamine. The clear liquid inside the syringe also tested positive for Methamphetamine.

The passenger of the vehicle, identified as Valerie Lezer (DOB 12/20/1982) was placed into custody and was transported to the Bates County Jail. Lezer was charged for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful use of Drug Paraphernalia. Both bonds were set at $12500.00 cash or surety.
