291 Highway in Cass County shut down last night after one vehicle accident

On 12/29/16 around 11:35pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County along with Cass County Sheriffs Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident on 291 Highway just south of Home Farm Road in rural Cass County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2003 Chevrolet driven by 23 year old John R. Starks of Strasburg, Missouri crossed the center line of the roadway, driver over corrected and traveled off the right side of the roadway striking a tree.

Mr. Starks sustained serious injuries in this accident and he was transported by air ambulance to Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri for treatment.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by Johnson's Tow.

Butler man arrested on felony warrants

John R. Lewis
On 12/29/16 around 5:21am the Butler Police Department arrested 29 year old John R. Lewis of Butler, Missouri.

Mr. Lewis was arrested for 1.) Felony Failure to appear warrant 2.) Felony Parole Violation.

He was booked into the Bates County Jail and placed on $2,500 cash only bond on the felony failure to appear warrant and No Bond on the Felony Parole Violation.

Shots fired call in Clinton

On 12/28/16 around 10:15 a.m. the Clinton Police Department was dispatched to the 900 Block of South Third Street in reference to a call of shots fired and a man with a gun.

When Officers arrived on scene they encountered a 53-year-old man who appeared to be in some sort of mental health distress, the Clinton Police Department stated on Thursday, Dec. 29.

Investigation at the scene showed that the subject had apparently shot several rounds from a handgun inside of his own residence, then exited the house and surrendered the empty weapon to a mail carrier who was in the area.

No one else was inside the residence at the time of the incident. There were no injuries or other property damage reports related to this incident.

The subject was transported to Golden Valley Memorial Hospital by ambulance and escorted by police where he was later medically cleared for confinement. He was arrested for 24 Hours Investigation of Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

Investigation continues in this case, the Clinton Police Department told The Clinton Daily Democrat. T
he cause of the man's mental health issue is not clear and the release of his identity is pending whether or not formal charges will be filed.

Belton man injured in Andrew County fatality accident

On 12/29/16 around 4:25pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Andrew County, Missouri along with Andrew County Sheriffs Deputies and the Union Star Fire Department responded to a two vehicle fatality accident on US 169 3 miles west of Union Star in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2007 Chevrolet SUV driven by 60 year old James A. Evans of Union Star, Missouri crossed the center line of traffic and struck the 2016 Chevrolet Express Van driven by 32 year old Eric L. Tamboli of Belton, Missouri behind the drivers door, which cause the vehicle to overturn and travel off the west side of the roadway, before coming to rest on its wheels.

James A. Evans was pronounced dead as a result of the accident at 5:20pm and he was transported to Meierhoffer Funeral Home in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mr. Tamboli sustained minor injuries in this accident and he was transported by Andrew County ambulance to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene by R & W Tow and Recovery of St. Joseph, Missouri.

Updated Obituary - Paul Francis Kurtz

Paul Francis Kurtz, age 86, Pleasanton, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. He was born on August 7, 1930 at Lawrence, Kansas the son of Roy and Bessie Burnell Kurtz. He graduated from Eudora High School. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. 

Paul married Lydia Jo New on August 6, 1955 at Lawrence, Kansas. She preceded him in death on October 2, 1996. He was a member of the Hesper Community Church and the American Legion. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed fishing. The Royals, Chiefs and KU basketball were his teams. 

Also preceding him in death were, a daughter, Brenda Stevens, two brothers, LeRoy and Oliver Kurtz, and two sisters, Norma Stanley and Eva Kurtz. Paul is survived by a daughter, Marsha Brown and husband Morgan, a sister, Geneveve Luther, five grandchildren: Tyler Brown and wife Amanda, Ryan Brown and wife Shelby, Jennifer Shaw, Crystal Stevens and Gina Faulkner, and fourteen great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 2 pm Monday, January 2, 2017 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. Burial will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 4 pm Sunday at the Schneider Pleasanton Chapel. Contributions are suggested to the American Heart or American Lung Association. Search warrant served in Eldorado Springs Missouri

Sheriff Leon Dwerlkotte reports that on December 28th, 2016 the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office along with the CNET Drug Task Force and the Eldorado Springs Police Department served a search warrant at the Vernie Harelson residence at 328 W. Joe Davis Street, Eldorado Springs, Missouri.

At the Harelson residence several items of contraband, several jars of Marijuana, baggie of pills and three (3) black powder pistols and a black powder rifle, all loaded ready to fire, along with a large amount of cash, and scales, was located within the residence. 

Vernie J. Harelson, DOB/06/16/1958, M/W was located within the residence and later transported to the Cedar County Jail for processing.

Vernie Harelson on the left was charged with Class B Felony Dist/Del/Manf/Produce or Attempted to possess with the intent to Dist/Del/Manf/Produce a Controlled Substance, and two counts of Class C Felony Unlawful possession of a Firearm. Harelson has a bond of $50,000.00, Warrant number 16CD-CR00576.

Temps take arctic plunge again next week

While the chances of any measurable precipitation is pretty slim, by this time next week temps are going back down in the miserable range.

Around Tuesday, overnight lows will be back in the teens with wind chills...near zero.

Good news? There will be a slight warming trend in the week to follow. Hang in there!




Obituary - Hazel Joan Shelton

Hazel Joan Shelton, 81, Nevada, MO passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Nevada. 

 Interment will follow in Click Cemetery, Nevada. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home.
