Richards man arrested in Allen County Kansas

Kenneth P. Thorn 

On 4/10/17 the Allen County Kansas Sheriff's Office arrested 45 year old Kenneth P. Thorn of Richards, Missouri.

Mr. Thron was arrested for 1.) 4 Counts of Aggravated Criminal Sodomy. 

He was booked into the Allen County Jail in Iola, Kansas and he is currently listed as bondable.

Obituary - Lily “Marie” Phillips

Lily “Marie” Phillips
Lily “Marie” Phillips, 96, rural El Dorado Springs, MO passed from this life on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs. Marie was born October 22, 1920 in Sugar City, CO to Edgar Patrick and Minnie Louise (Phillips) Moore. On February 12, 1938 she was united in marriage to Charles M. Phillips and he preceded her in death in November 1997.

Marie was raised near Ft Scott and also Rich Hill. Following her marriage she lived most of her life in Nevada. Marie worked for Key Work Clothes and Nelly Don in Nevada for a number of years. She also lived and worked for a time in Belton for the Grace Company. In the early 80’s she moved to Pensacola, FL where she owned and operated her own sewing shop for nearly 20 years. In 2000 she moved back to Neodesha, KS and in 2012 to El Dorado Springs, MO where she has continued to reside. Marie was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Nevada.

Survivors include her children, Louise Parizek and her husband Richard, Overland Park, KS, Charlene Jenkins and her husband Jim, rural El Dorado Springs, Charles Phillips and his wife Sandra, Pensacola, FL, Harold Phillips and his wife Elaine, Chelsa, OK, Martha Osterhout and her husband Nelson, Huntsville, AR; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Moore, Holden, MO; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Marie Reed, three brothers, three sisters, and one great-granddaughter, April Nicole Jenkins.



Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Nevada with Pastor Abel Hagan officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Seventh Day Adventist Scholarship Fund in c/o the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 15467 E Quail Rd, Nevada, MO 64772.









Obituary - Wallace Eugene Sloan

Wallace Eugene Sloan
Wallace Eugene Sloan, 90, Nevada, MO passed away on April 12, 2017 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. Wallace was born July 7, 1926 in Fallis, OK to Orval C. and Eva Mae (Howell) Sloan. He was united in marriage to Ida Maxine Carlini on June 3, 1948 in Nevada, MO and she survives of the home.

Wally was raised in Cushing, Oklahoma and attended high school there. He helped his father farm for a while before leaving school early to join the United States Navy. Wally served in the US Navy from 1943-1945 and was in the reserves until being fully discharge in 1946. While in the Navy, he was a Navy Sea-Bee and was stationed in Okinawa and Guam during WWII. Following his time in the service, Wally began a career pipelining throughout the United States. In 1954 Wally and Maxine came home to Nevada to live and in 1965 began a career in heavy equipment projects for farms and conservation areas. He was a craftsman who built and repaired his own construction equipment. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Nevada. Wally enjoyed woodworking, his paint horses, and time spent on his farm. He especially loved spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife Maxine, he is survived by two children, Ron Sloan and his wife Karen, Nevada, Connie Barker and her husband Jim, Nevada; two grandchildren, Veronica Prough and her husband Deland, Schell City, Jason Sloan, Colorado Springs, CO; two great-grandchildren, Jaxon Prough, and Weston Prough; sisters, Donna McAffee and her husband Wilburn, Tulsa, OK, Helen Blankenship and her husband Donald, Catoosa, OK; brother-in-law, Bill Carlini and his wife Glenda, Nevada, sister-in-law, Frances Sloan, Muskogee, OK; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Buford Sloan.



Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2017 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. prior to the service.





Congratulations Lieutenant Travis Cole!


The Vernon County Sheriff's Department would like to congratulate Deputy Travis Cole on his promotion from Sergeant to Lieutenant of the Patrol Division. Sergeant Cole started with the Sheriff's Office in 2013 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2015. Lieutenant Cole has more then 10 years of law enforcement experience. Lieutenant John Randall will be transferring from Patrol to the Investigations Division as the supervisor of investigations.

Mayme Sue Enlow, age 89 of Foster, Missouri died Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at her home in Foster. She was born October 10, 1927 to Byron Hunter and Erin Talley Cole in San Angelo, Texas.

Sue is survived by her husband Milton Enlow of Foster, Missouri; two sons, William Dixon Gibbs III of Galveston, Texas and Dan Gibbs and wife Cathy of Angleton, Texas; three daughters, Shirley Sargent and husband Richard and Kerry Webb and husband Russell of all Butler, Missouri and Stella “Dee” Anthony and husband Aaron of Noel, Missouri; a stepson, Larry Enlow and wife Rose of Butler, Missouri; stepdaughter, Pam Enlow-Edsall and husband Ben of Kansas City, Missouri; and 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband W.D. Gibbs, Jr.; her second husband Elmond Strempel; one brother, Byron; three sisters, Ruth, Shirley and Carleen; and one grandson Darren Enlow.
