Update: Butler man injured after falling out of vehicle teetering on Bates County Bridge

On 8/3/17 the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County long with Butler Fire Department responded to a one vehicle accident on County Road 2275 and County Road SE 365 in rural Bates County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 1991 Chevrolet driven by 71 year old Steven L. Hawk of Butler, Missouri crossed the center of the roadway and struck a bridge abutment on the left side of the roadway. After impact, Mr. Hawk attempted to exit the vehicle and fell approximately 40 Feet.

Mr. Hawk sustained serious injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The truck was towed from the scene by Douty's Tow of Butler, Missouri.

Local 4H member receives award

Victoria Newkirk recently received the Brownfield Network Award for her 8 years of service and hard work in the V52 4-H club. Here Victoria receives the award (a belt buckle) from Robyn Eckhoff of the University of Missouri Extension. She is the daughter of Clayton and Valerie Newkirk of rural Virginia. Congratulations!

Sherwood bus drivers get CPR Training and fire extinguisher training

Fire Chief Mark Lopez and Kurtis Austin with the Garden City Fire Department took time out of their busy schedule this morning to provide CPR Training and fire extinguisher training to Sherwood bus drivers. 

We appreciate the partnership with our emergency service providers as we continually strive to keep our kids safe.

Vehicle found teetering on edge of bridge in Bates County

At 10:36 a.m. Thursday, August 3 the Butler Fire Department was called to assist Bates County EMS, Bates County Sheriff and Missouri State Highway Patrol for a report of a vehicle going off of a bridge. 

Upon arrival to the scene the vehicle was found teetering on the edge of the bridge. 

The vehicle was secured and the patient was located on the edge of the water about 40 feet below the bridge. 

The patient was rescued and transported by Bates County EMS to the Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Obituary - Lloyd E. Brown Jr.

Lloyd E. Brown Jr.

Lloyd E. Brown Jr., age 80, died July 29, 2017 at Belton Regional Medical Center. 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, 11:00 a.m., August 4th, with visitation from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3rd at Cullen Funeral Home. Burial will take place at the Belton Cemetery following the funeral service. 

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Stroke Foundation, 5916 Dearborn St, Shawnee Mission, KS 66202.

Lloyd was born on February 21, 1937, in the small town of Haxtun, Colorado. He attended school and lived there until he joined the U.S. Air Force in September of 1954. He made a career of the Air Force, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant. He enjoyed the Air Force and completed tours of duty in Texas, Washington, Missouri, and served in Okinawa and Thailand.

He retired from the Air Force in October of 1976. He subsequently was employed by General Motors and Ford. Lloyd will be terribly missed by all those he touched by his words and actions. 

His family was a very important part of his life. Lloyd is a Christian, having accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His soul and spirit are with Jesus now.

Lloyd leaves 6 children, Cindy Cantwell (Marvin), Lloyd Brown III, Johnna Brown, Dara McMurray (Vince), Michael Brown (Melissa), and George Brown; 15 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. His siblings live in Ogallala, Nebraska and Cody, Wyoming.

From the Bates County Memorial Hospital

About 130 children toured the BCMH Ambulance or visited the hospital's booth at the Bates County Health Center Children's Health Fair on Tuesday, August 1st.

Indoors, Respiratory Therapist Marci Denning educated visiting children about asthma using a game with straws and cotton balls, demonstrating the difference in the ease of air flow. 

Thanks to the Health Center and many other participating organizations, Bates County kids enjoyed free screenings, giveaways, food, and an increased awareness of living a healthy life.
