Assault on Officers-Explosives incident in Joplin

Keith Wald
On August 7th 2017 at about 0328 AM an officer with the Joplin Police Department stopped a truck pulling a trailer at 4th and Sergeant for not having trailer lights. Two occupants of the vehicle were contacted. As another officer arrived and exited his vehicle, an occupant of the truck threw an explosive device out the window that immediately exploded.

The truck then fled the area. Officers immediately began a pursuit of the suspect vehicle. At E Street and Sergeant, an occupant of the vehicle threw a second explosive device out of the vehicle, causing a second explosion.

The pursuit continued north and west. Another Joplin Officer, who was responding to assist for the calls for emergency backup and detonations of explosive devices, lost control of their police car at Lone Elm and Surrey northbound. The police car left the roadway and struck a tree.
Nathan Felton

The pursuit went into Cherokee County Kansas and contact with the suspect vehicle was lost in the area of Highway 400 and Messer. No officers were hurt by the explosions and the officer who was involved in the accident declined medical treatment.

We are currently trying to locate both occupants of the truck for First Degree Assault on Law Enforcement along with other charges:
Keith Wald, 34, Joplin
Nathan Felton, 22, Neosho

They were last seen in a 2001 White F-150 extended cab with a broken back left window, Missouri Plate 4MZ291 pulling a flatbed trailer with Missouri Plate 68E6YK. Neither subject should be approached and should be considered dangerous.

Anyone with any information should call 417-623-3131 or 911
(Wald is pictured in red jacket, Felton is pictured in white)

Update: Officer Involved Shooting kills officer in Clinton,Subject still on the loose

Ian McCarthy
At 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, August 6, 2017, a Clinton police officer initiated a traffic stop on a 2008 Dodge Nitro for a traffic violation on Green Street south of Missouri Highway 13. The preliminary investigation indicates that as the suspect vehicle came to a stop the driver exited the vehicle and fired his weapon toward the officer, striking the officer. The officer returned fire before the suspect subsequently fled the scene in his vehicle.

Officer Gary Michael, 37, was transported to Golden Valley Hospital in Clinton, Missouri, where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect vehicle was later recovered approximately two blocks south of the initial shooting. The suspect is still at large, and has been identified as Ian McCarthy, 39, a white male from Clinton, Missouri.

The public is advised against making contact with McCarthy, who is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of McCarthy should contact law enforcement or call 911 or dial *55 on a cellular phone.

Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control, the Clinton Police Department, and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate. Officers from all three departments are currently searching for McCarthy.

Safety Is Important During Total Solar Eclipse

The Missouri State Highway Patrol asks the public to be aware of and plan for the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. The eclipse will follow a diagonal path across Missouri approximately from St. Joseph in the west to Ste. Genevieve in the east. Thousands of visitors are expected to arrive in the days leading up to the event. This influx of additional motorists will affect traffic patterns. Please plan your trip accordingly.

To avoid the heaviest traffic when traveling for the event, it will be helpful to leave early and plan to remain at your viewing location until a period after the eclipse to avoid any congestion afterwards. For the most up-to-date information on the roads, visit the Patrol's website,
www.mshp.dps.mo.gov, to check road conditions on MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map.

The Patrol reminds every driver to pay attention, obey all traffic laws, and wear a seat belt.

Additional safe driving tips include:

· Don’t stop along the interstate or park on the shoulder.
· Find a safe location to view the event and get there early.
· Don’t take photographs while driving.
· Turn your headlights on and do not rely on your automatic headlights.
· Prepare for extra congestion, especially on interstates, on the day before, day of and day after the eclipse.
· Watch out for increased pedestrian traffic along smaller roads. People may randomly park and walking alongside roads in the hour before the total eclipse to get the best viewing.
· Avoid travel during the eclipse or in the area of the path of totality if you can.
· Never wear eclipse glasses when driving a car or operating a boat.
· Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and has a full tank of gas.
· Bring along water and snacks in your vehicle.

If you have planned a day on the water for August 21, make sure your boat has the proper lighting if you will be on the water during the eclipse. It will become quite dark. Be aware of your surroundings and what hazards exist near your boat leading up to the eclipse, so you're prepared when the eclipse occurs. Always keep a safe distance between yourself and other boaters. Swimmers will be hard to see as the eclipse occurs.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is available to assist you. Should you need emergency assistance, see a drunk or careless driver, or if you see a crime being committed, call 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cell phone. The number is toll-free and rings at the nearest Highway Patrol troop headquarters.
