From the desk of Bates County Coroner Greg Mullinax

Today I am in my office reviewing Bates County's Mass Fatality Plan before meeting with our Emergency Management Agency tomorrow morning. Periodically we do this to update resources and ensure cooperation.

Each time I review this plan I truly hope to never see it utilized. Nonetheless, it is my job to be prepared and make sure that in such an event, we have the right tools at our disposal to handle any situation that comes our way.

20 years ago today!

Today is the 20-yr anniversary of the KC metro flash flood event. Ten lives were lost & an estimated $50 million in damages occurred. Seven of those lives were lost as people tried to drive across a flooded bridge.

As we look ahead to the next several days, several rounds of heavy rain are expected across portions of eastern Kansas and western Missouri.

Flash flooding will be a concern where the heaviest axis of rain occurs, especially for areas prone to flooding and low-lying areas. Remember to Turn around, Don't Drown!
