Two from Rich Hill escape injury after sliding off snow covered roadway

On 11/12/18 around 9:53am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County responded to a one vehicle slide off on Route A just east of Route PP in rural western Rich Hill.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2016 Ford Expedition driven by 33 year old Lana K. Koehn of Rich Hill, Missouri began to slide on snow covered roadways and slid off the right side down a embankment striking a ditch.

A passenger in the vehicle 7 year old Clay T. Koehn of Rich Hill sustained minor injuries in this accident and he refused medical treatment at the scene of the accident.

The vehicle received minor damages and it was towed from the scene by a private tow.

Obituary - Orville F. Ellis

Orville F. Ellis passed from this earth on November 11, 2018. Orville was born November 23, 1919 in a one-room log cabin located in Maries County, MO to James Laymon and Mayme Louise [Shelton] Ellis. He married Adeline Francis Muilliere in St. Louis, MO on April 13, 1941 and together they enjoyed a marriage of 49 years until her death on April 26, 1990. He later married Edna Eliza Davis Veit on February 14, 1991 in Nevada, MO and she preceded him in death on August 28, 2009.

Orville left school at the age of 14 in 1933 at the height of the Great Depression to begin employment at the Roxy Theatre Corporation in St. Louis MO, working his way up to Service Manager. In 1939 he began his association with the war effort by serving as a liaison between the British Corps of Engineers and U.S. companies in the manufacture and shipment of steel “Knock Down Bridges.” He continued the U.S. defense effort with his participation in the L.S.T. program (landing ships, tanks and floating dry docks). Orville enlisted in the US Army and served with the 70th Infantry Trailblazer Division in Europe, where he was a combat rifleman in three campaigns (Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe) during WWII. Upon his return to the U.S. in 1946, he entered the restaurant and package liquor business in Mount Carmel, Illinois. Orville returned to St. Louis in 1950, where he began employment at Airtherm Manufacturing Co. He was elected to the Airtherm Corporate Board of Directors in 1962 and retired in 1984 as Vice President of Operations. During his working career, he was highly involved with multiple national manufacturing groups and was privileged to have helped further the cause of human relations in the workplace not only in St. Louis, but nationwide. Orville served as president for a number of professional associations related to his work as well as for the Lutheran Church of Webster Groves, MO, where he was an active member for many years, and for the 70th Infantry Division Association. He traveled extensively in Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Japan, Korea, and the South Pacific. 

After 51 years in the work force he retired in 1984, allowing him a slower pace of life and time to enjoy his home and yard, play golf, engaged in pleasure travel, and everything else he referred to as “The Good Life.” Orville relocated from St. Louis to Nevada, MO after his marriage to Edna and immersed himself into the community as a member of the First Baptist Church, the Nevada County Club, and the Rotary. He was a beloved uncle to two nephews and two nieces, a dear and loyal friend to people in many states and across counties, and was known to all as a true gentleman.

In addition to his wives, Orville was preceded in death by his parents, nephews, and two brothers, Bob J. Ellis and Kenneth Ellis. He is survived by his nieces Dawn Ellis of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Peggy Ellis of Phoenix, Arizona. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 16, 2018 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Rev. Hubert Fox officiating. Private burial will follow Monday, November 19, 2018 at St. Paul Churchyard in St. Louis. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Lucille Nelson of Butler, Missouri will be 11 a.m. Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler with Kevin Black officiating.

Edna Lucille Nelson, age 94 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, Missouri. She was born July 22, 1924 to William Garfield and Ada Bell Booth Thomas in Double Branch, Missouri.

Lucille is survived by her daughter, Teresa Whitehead and husband Tim of Oak Grove, Missouri; a grandson, Aaron Whitehead and wife Rachael of Kansas City, Missouri; a granddaughter, Amy Wallick and husband Philip of St. Joseph, Missouri; and three great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Micah and Remington Wallick; She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert "Bob" Nelson; seven brothers, Duitch "LeRoy" Thomas, Kenneth Thomas, Harry Francis Thomas, Donald Thomas, Tunney Thomas, Harley Thomas, and Howard Thomas; and two sisters, Erma Hall and Laverna Seeley.



Police Pursuit in Barton County

On November 12th 2018 at approximately 7:40 a.m. the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a high-speed Pursuit that traveled through Lamar at a high rate of speed. The deputy first encountered the vehicle at approximately O Highway and 160 west of Lamar. 

The vehicle traveled East on 160 until it reached the substation by Barton County Electric where it then turned and went back westbound on 160 highway. The vehicle continued westbound until it turned around once again at a residential driveway (before J highway) and headed back eastbound on 160. The deputy pursued the suspect vehicle into Lamar. 

Where he discontinued the pursuit at the railroad tracks on 12th Street by Lexington due to knowing the vehicle was headed into a School Zone and that there would be heavy traffic. The Sheriff is requesting that if anybody has any video of the vehicle driving past their business in Lamar if you can save that video we would appreciate it. 

If you witnessed the vehicle this morning we would like to get a statement from witnesses. The investigation is ongoing in this case. 

The vehicle is described as a silver 4 door Pontiac vehicle with Kansas license plates.



From the Harrisonville Police Department



On 11-12-2018 at approximately 1000 hours, Harrisonville Police and Fire personnel were called to a motor vehicle accident on northbound I-49 just south of Missouri 291 Highway. First responders found a two-vehicle accident involving a sedan and semi-truck. 

Serious injuries were reported, and two individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Northbound I-49 has been shut down for approximately 1 hour. 

The cause of the accident is still under investigation which is being conducted by Missouri State Highway Patrol. The condition of the injured individuals is unknown currently.
