Thursday December 20, 2018, Bates County's Sheriff Chad Anderson and his crew will be cooking the lunch at the Butler Senior Center! They will be serving turkey, dressing, sides, and dessert. 

They will be delivering the meals to the Kern Center and to the home bound in Bates County. Come to the Butler Senior Center for lunch with Sheriff Chad Anderson! 

If you would like to eat lunch at the Kern Center, please contact the Kern Center Volunteer at 417-395-2225 the day before or before 9AM on the day of the meal.

Structure Fire in rural Butler

Shortly after noon today the Butler Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1238 NW CR 4002 in rural Butler.

The cause of this fire in under investigation and more information will be released when it's made available to us from the Butler Fire Department.

Arkansas man injured in Bates County Rollover Accident

On 12/14/18 around 8:19pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Adrian Fire Department and Bates County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle rollover accident on I-49 near mile marker 141 around the Adrian area of Bates County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by 24 year old Taylor M. Downs of Batesville, Arkansas was northbound on I-49 when he crossed the median and into the southbound lanes of I-49 where he traveled off the roadway and overturned.

Taylor M. Downs sustained moderate injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by Adrian Tire and Tow.

Fatality Accident in Cass County

On 12/15/18 around 10:30am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County along with Cass County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two vehicle fatality accident on Missouri 2 Highway at Route K in rural Cass County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2005 Ford Focus driven by 21 year old Colton W. Parker of Independence, Missouri failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by the 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 60 year old Daniel R. Foster of Garden City, Missouri.

Colton W. Parker was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and he was transported to the Jackson County Medical Examiners Office.

A passenger in Mr. Parker's Vehicle Logan Parker sustained serious injuries in this accident and he was transported by Life Flight to Children's Mercy Hospital for treatment.

Mr. Foster sustained minor injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, Missouri for treatment.

Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene of the accident by J's Southland Tow.

This is Troop A of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's 76th Fatality of 2018.

French “Buddy” Mario Butler II passed away peacefully at his home outside of Appleton City, Missouri, on December 13, 2018. The only son of French Mario and Pearl (Weinstein) Butler, he was born on March 4, 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Hudson School, where he made many lifelong friends, and then graduated from Appleton City High School in 1980. Buddy immediately took over his family farm and began ranching, which he continued all his life.

Buddy married Kim Hampton in 1987, yet even through a divorce they remained close friends. He later married Jenny Jennings in 2001, gaining a daughter Olivia, who he always adored. Jenny and Buddy divorced, but remained best friends and family.      

Buddy was known and remembered as a “gentleman-farmer,” who enjoyed supervising his cattle operation as much as laboring in it. He spent many white-knuckled Sunday afternoons watching Chiefs football and providing “expert” commentary on how the team might improve. Buddy dearly loved a big-fat-steak and refreshments on evenings, weekends, and holidays. One of his favorite activities was “stirring-the-pot” and amusing himself by riling up his friends and family, all in good fun. He will be dearly missed by all those who encountered him.    

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, French Mario and Pearl (Weinstein) Butler.

Buddy is survived by those he considered family: Jenny Butler and his daughter Olivia Jennings; as well as Straton and Kim Raybourn and Straton Lee Raybourn; and his cousins. He will be deeply missed by his many friends.

Obituary - John J. Kauffman

John J. Kauffman, 92, passed away on December 10, 2018 in his home in Grand Junction, Colorado. 

Born August 12, 1926, in El Dorado Springs, Missouri, he was the son of John and Ellen L. (Jennings) Kauffman. He attended school through 8th grade in Pleasanton, KS before leaving home at the age of 16 to pursue work in agriculture. 

John spent many years driving truck and custom combining across the western United States. John settled in Hillsdale, WY in the 1950s where he achieved great success seeing countless harvests up until the age of 87 when he retired.

Family was very important to John, there were many summers when relatives would assist with harvest, many coming to stay for the summer. John shared his love for farming with his brother Don and nephew Dennis Curry. When John wasn''t working hard in the field he enjoyed snowmobiling, traveling and spending time with family. John was especially close with great-nephew Matthew Curry (wife Rachel), great-niece Jami Curry (husband Ryan), and great-niece Jill Strenger (husband Jacob). In his later years, John enjoyed watching his great-grandnieces and nephew play in his yard, spending time with friends and family, and reading the adventures of Louis L''Amour.

John is preceded in death by his parents, brother Don Kauffman and sister Ida Crail. John is survived by his siblings Marjorie Curry of Liberal, Kansas and Virginia Schmid (husband Dudley) of Houston, Texas. John is also survived by his 11 nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pleasanton Cemetery in Pleasanton, KS. The family suggests donations may be made to HopeWest Hospice in Grand Junction, Colorado, and they may be mailed in care of Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory P.O. Search Warrant Served in Nevada

In the morning hours of Thursday December 13, 2018 Nevada Police executed a search warrant in the 700 block of South Clay Street in connection to a felony wanted subject hiding inside.

Officers had developed information from the local probation & parole office that a known female subject who had an outstanding felony arrest warrant for probation violation was living at that location.

Officers went by the address in an attempt to serve the arrest warrant. Upon arriving at the residence officers could hear someone inside the residence, but they refused to cooperate with law enforcement.

Officers subsequently obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s residence. During the execution of the warrant officers located the wanted female suspect inside the residence.

While attempting to take the female subject into custody, a male subject inside the residence interfered with officers while they were making the arrest and was also taken into custody.

Two subjects were taken into custody and transported to the Vernon County Jail for holding. The two subjects were identified as follows:

Tiffany Johnson, age 34 of Nevada

Baldemar Martinez Jr, age 53 of Nevada

On December 13, 2018, the following charges were filed against Tiffany Johnson through the Vernon County Associate Court:

Resisting Arrest for a Felony – Felony E

Johnson is being held in the Vernon County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 cash only bond for the resisting arrest charge. Johnson is also being held on a felony probation violation warrant with no bond.

On December 13, 2018 the following charges were filed against Baldemar Martinez Jr through the Vernon County Associate Court:

Interfering with an Arrest for a Felony – Felony E

Martinez is being held in the Vernon County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 cash only bond.

Two arrests made for attempting to smuggle contraband to inmates at the Vernon County Courthouse

Investigators made two separate arrests in the Vernon County Courthouse Thursday morning in what officials say was an attempt to smuggle items considered contraband to inmates who were being taken to court by Detention Officers. 

Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher says investigators were monitoring the courthouse from a remote location after receiving information about a person who may try to smuggle contraband to an inmate. Mosher said a second person was also spotted during the surveillance and taken into custody by personnel who were on site to make the arrests. 

Mosher said improvements were made to the camera system at the courthouse this year and that Sheriff’s Office personnel are now able to monitor the courthouse from the Sheriff’s Office while court is in session.

Charges were issued Thursday afternoon charging Amber Goodwin, 29 of Nevada with Delivery or Possession of Items at a County/Private Jail/Corrections Center. Goodwin was also charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and is being held in the Vernon County Jail on a $11,500 cash only bond.

Colleen Smith, 61, of Nevada has also been charged with Delivery or Possession of Items at a County/Private Jail/Corrections Center and is being held in the Vernon County Jail on a $1,500 cash only bond.
