Stamps set for largest-ever price increase in January 2019

The Postal Regulatory Commission approved a U.S. Postal Service request for the largest-ever increase in the cost of a stamp.

The cost of a Forever stamp will rise from 50 cents to 55 cents, a 10 percent increase.

Metered letters will go from 47 cents to 50 cents though the cost for each additional ounce will actually fall from 21 cents to 15 cents.

The 5 cent increase in stamp costs is the largest since 1991, when prices increased from 25 cents to 29 cents, a 16 percent hike.

The new rates will take effect on Jan. 27, 2019.
In an earlier press release, the USPS said the “new rates will keep the Postal Service competitive while providing the agency with needed revenue.”

Priority mail rates are going up, too, with packages costing between 65 cents to a $1 more per box.

Small flat rate box - from $7.20 to $7.90
Medium flat rate box - from $13.65 to $14.35
Large flat rate box - From $18.90 to $19.95.
Regular flat rate envelope - From $6.70 to $7.35
Large flat rate envelope - From $7 to $7.65
Padded flat rate envelope - From $7.25 to $8.
