Police Pursuit ends near Butler

Kansas State Highway Patrol Troopers ended a pursuit with a unknown make and model vehicle near J Highway around the Amsterdam a short time ago.

The vehicle was spotted by a Bates County Sheriff's Deputy around the area of 52 Highway and V Highway near Virginia. The deputy turned around on the vehicle and began to pursue the vehicle.

The vehicle traveled 52 Highway to Butler were it got off  the wrong way on I-49 going northbound in the southbound lanes of traffic. After entering the highway the pursuit was quickly brought to a stop and two suspects were taken into police custody.

Obituary - Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Johnston

Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Johnston of Harrisonville, Missouri was born February 3, 1935 in Alton, Illinois the daughter of Rudolph Louis and Marie Elizabeth (Murphy) Voges. She departed this life on Friday, February 8, 2019 at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri surrounded by love and family at the age of 84 years and 5 months. 

On March 7, 1964 Betty was united in marriage to Robert Eugene Johnston in Kansas City, Missouri. 

Betty was a homemaker and was also employed as a bookkeeper for Meyer Health Care Services, Kansas City, Missouri until her retirement. She enjoyed doing cross word puzzles and playing cards. Betty had lived in Kansas City before moving to Harrisonville in 1999.

Besides her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bob on August 5, 2012; her daughter-in-law, Michelle Johnston and a brother, Ed.

Betty is survived by 2 sons, Robert E. Johnston (Johnna), Cleveland, Missouri, David M. Johnston, Independence, Missouri; 3 daughters, Lisa Roethler, Raytown, Missouri, Julie Andrews (Terry), Holden, Missouri, Karen K. Johnston, Lee's Summit, Missouri; 23 grandchildren, John (Sarah), James, Kayla (Kris), Breanna (Erik), Danielle, Nick, Rachael (Randy), Alan, Abby (Mike), Lynda (Jimmy), Jessica Renae (Chris), Jessica Lynn (Aaron), J.P., Bryce and Jillian; 9 great-grandchildren, Hayden, Hunter, Addison, Dominic, Carter, Chase, Kaley, Jamie, Clara, Juliana and Ava; other relatives and a host of friends. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri with burial in the Glenwild Cemetery, Cleveland, Missouri.

Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the funeral home.




Obituary - Betty Ruth Helms

Betty Ruth Helms, 96, Nevada MO, retired to her home in heaven on February 9, 2019. She was born May 24, 1922 in rural Ralls County, MO to Allyn and Dilola (Jones) Turnbull.

With written permission from her Mother on September 30, 1942, Betty became a part of history when she enlisted in the US Navy as one of the first enlisted women to serve in the WAVES. 

She was trained in Morse code and was a radioman at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida, relieving men for combat duty. Betty often told the story about copying a message from one pilot that read “Silver wings in the moonlight”.

After serving in the Navy, Betty attended college on the GI Bill. She attended University of Houston, University of Denver, and finishing her education at University of Missouri, Columbia, receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Betty established her own business in 1961 as a transportation consultant for the trucking industry. The business, Helms Permit Agency, is still in existence today.

Betty leaves behind one son Rick Helms, and his wife Janet of Rogersville, MO; one granddaughter Tracy (Ricky Dale) Carter, two great-grandsons, Kory and Kolton Carter, of Foreman, AR; one grandson Garah Helms, three great-granddaughters, Allison, Mika, and Lachlan, of Des Moines, IA.

Betty also leaves behind one sister, LaVon Posey, Nevada MO, and a host of family including her loving nephew Mike Turnbull, and very special friends.

In heaven, she was welcomed by her parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters including Mary Jean, Suzann, Pat, David, Judy, Marjorie, Bill, and Barbara Jo, extended family and so many wonderful friends.

A Celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Wednesday, February 13th at 6pm, with visitation to immediately follow.

Funeral service, with Military Rites, will be held at 1:00 p.m.on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville MO.

Obituary - Connie Laverne (Miskell) Moffatt

Connie Laverne Moffatt, 76, Nevada, MO passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at her home in Nevada following a lengthy illness. Connie was born September 24, 1942 in Mt. Carmel, IL to Ruby Pearline Miskell. She was united in marriage to Paul “Pete” Moffatt on July 13, 1976 in Miami, OK and he survives of the home.

Connie moved to El Dorado Springs with her family from Mt. Carmel, IL and attended school in El Dorado Springs. Connie worked at Nevada State Hospital for 30 years until her retirement in 2002. She was a member of First Christian Church in Nevada. Connie was a loving wife, loyal grandmother, and very devoted to her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Pete, she is survived by two sons, Tracy Bybee and his wife Cindy, Nevada, Keith Anderson, Nevada; two daughters, Becky Myers and her husband Roy, Nevada, Kenya Storm and her husband Scott, Nevada; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kelly Bybee, Huntsville, TX, Harley Collier, Mt. Vernon, MO; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Kenny Anderson; grandsons, Timothy Bybee, Blake Beerbower; great-grandsons, Austin Lukenbill, Daulton Newcome-Bybee, step-daughter, Kelly Moffatt and infant daughter; sister, Diane Duncan, and brother Mike Collier..

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Bill Platt officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Vernon County Cancer Relief in c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

They are being sought in connection with a possible shoplifting from the Dollar General Store in Tightwad that occurred in late January, 2019.

Obituary - Pamela “Pam” Anne Heathman

Pamela “Pam” Anne Heathman, 72 of Nevada passed away Saturday, February 9, 2019 in Joplin following a period of illness.

Pam was born February 7, 1947 in Jerico Springs, MO, the daughter of Billie Thomas and Dorothy Louise (Wallace) Mitchell. She lived in K.C., MO and moved to Nevada when she was seven. She was baptized in the Pine Street Baptist Church when she was nine and graduated from Nevada High School in 1965. 

Pam married Loren Heathman on May 27, 1977 and worked as a secretary in Nevada for years. Her passion for art and interior design led to self- employment; detailing automobiles in the beginning, house cleaning, and later interior design with arts and crafts fabrication, and wallpapering.

Pam is survived by daughter, Erica Nichols, Gentry, AR; son, Ryan Heathman (Amber) Nevada; four grandchildren, Trenton, Lauren, Eric, and Declan; two great-grandchildren, Bentlee and Aiden; mother Dorothy Kenimer, El Dorado Springs; two brothers, Larry Mitchell (Dorothy), Joplin and Bradley Mitchell (Jonna) Boerne, TX; nieces, nephews, extended family and many special friends.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2019 in the Ferry Funeral Home Chapel with Mark Mitchell officiating. Inurnment will follow in Newton Burial Park at a later date.
