BCMH Auxiliary Volunteer Spotlight

Kathy Bunch, Auxiliary Volunteer, likes to make crafts called tray favors to brighten the day of patients at Bates County Memorial Hospital.

The favors are placed on all food trays destined for patient rooms at meal time.

Kathy enjoys making the favors, and does so whenever inspiration strikes (about 18-20 sets in a year) because, she says, “I like to be creative, and this gives me an outlet.”

Kathy is computer-savvy and finds most of her ideas on the Internet. She usually crafts her tray favors around holiday themes, but sometimes (like the ones pictured here) she just makes something cheerful. Most of her favors are containers with something inside. For this set, Kathy made the boxes by cutting them out of paper, using a template. Last year during the summer, she chose a fishing theme, placing a few goldfish crackers in a clear plastic cup.

Kathy works with the BCMH Nutrition Services Department to ensure that all food treats are approved for patients. Nutrition aides deliver the trays to patients, so our patients aren’t always aware who provided the bit of cheer on their food tray.

Occasionally though, Kathy says a patient has stopped by the Information Desk on a day that she was scheduled to volunteer there with the Auxiliary, and thanked her.

“They have told me it made their day,” she said.

Our Auxiliary Volunteers perform many acts of kindness for our patients every day. Next time you see a volunteer, thank him or her for their service to the community.
