Appleton City man arrested in St. Clair County

On Sept. 1, Joshua Young, 35, Appleton City was arrested on three St. Clair County warrants. The first warrant charges him with a class D felony possession of a controlled substance and a class D misdemeanor unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond is set at $2,500 cash only.

The warrant comes after a St. Clair County deputy performed a traffic stop on a vehicle that Young was driving, for a traffic violation in April of 2019. The deputy made contact with Young and asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle. Young gave consent for the deputy to search the vehicle. During the search, a glass pipe with a white residue was located.

The second warrant is for a class D misdemeanor driving with no insurance. Bond is set at $500 cash only. This warrant stems from the traffic stop by a St. Clair County deputy in April of 2019.

The third warrant is for a class D felony possession of a controlled substance, two class D felony counts of delivery or possession of a controlled substance at a county/private jail/correctional center, and a class D misdemeanor unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

The warrant comes after a deputy performed a traffic stop on the vehicle Young was a passenger in for an equipment violation in May of 2019. After getting consent to search the vehicle from the driver, the deputy found a green bag on the floorboard in the passenger area of the vehicle. Inside the bag was a syringe, a plastic bag with a white crystal-like substance, and a pair of “brass” knuckles. The crystal-like substance did field test positive for methamphetamine.

While being transported to the jail, the deputy reminded Young, that if he had anything else hidden on his person, he needed to speak up now. Young stated he did have some pills on his person. Upon arrival, Young was taken in to be searched. The correctional staff did locate the pills and a plastic bag with a crystal-like substance. All evidence was collected.

Obituary -Luella Belle (Ford) Driskel

Luella Belle Driskel, 84, formerly of Sheldon, MO passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2019 at Truman Healthcare and Rehab in Lamar, MO. Luella was born September 25, 1934 in rural Sheldon, MO to George H. and Sylvia I. (Hoover) Ford. She was united in marriage to Darce Driskel on July 13, 1954 in Kenoma, MO and he preceded her in death.

Luella grew up outside of Sheldon graduated from Sheldon High School. Throughout her life she worked in various places as a skilled laborer. Luella loved living on the family farm with her husband, where they raised their family. She lived in Barton and Vernon Counties all of her life. Luella enjoyed crocheting, and loved being a part of her family’s lives.

Survivors include one daughter Phyllis E. Hagerman (Ralph) , Lockwood, MO; one son, Clinton D. Driskel (Julie), Sheldon, MO; five grandchildren, Michael Hagerman (Robyn), Ozark, MO, Jeremy Hagerman (Becki), Tahlequah, OK, Lyddia Gilmore (Steve), Carl Junction, MO, Clinton Driskel, Jr., Bronaugh, MO, Darcey Mize (Chris) Liberal, MO; one brother, Walter Ford (Mary), Sheldon, MO; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends. In addition to her husband Darce, she was preceded in death by her parents, and five siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2019 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Rev. Kent Garfield officiating. Interment will follow in Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made in her memory to the Parkinson's Foundation c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

From Butler Ward 4 Councilman Dale Newkirk

The finance committee met tonight and talked insurance. Our agent assured us that our rates are not being set based on the "new price" figure so the difference between that and actual cash value is really irrelevant. It does look like there may be some savings to the city by tweaking the auto policy. It was also discussed that our agent and the operations manager will get together, drive the city and make sure all the buildings, shelters, ect are all on our policy and see if there are any adjustments to be made. I am confident we are making good progress on this issue.

Next townhall meeting will be September 30th at the Butler High school at 7pm. Please plan on attending this important informational meeting.

Ordinance 1105 was passed tonight to get the ball rolling on a $239,501.00 MODOT grant for the airport. This is a 10 percent matching grant which will be the cities part. This grant can only be used for Aviation.

The draft of the updated economic incentive package is finished and was given to all to review. If all looks good, it will be adopted by the council. This is super important to aid us in attracting new jobs and businesses.

We just learned tonight that we have received two applications for our economic developer position. We should get a look at those at our next meeting.

Your city council members will be serving at the community cafe on September 24th at the Nazarene church. The menu will be spaghetti, salad, bread and dessert.

As promised, your city council is hard at work for you. Our success will be measured by the differences we make in the lives of the citizens of Butler.
