Homicide Investigation In Belton

On 9-4-19 at approximately 11:30 PM, Belton Police Officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of N Scott on shots fired with an injured party. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim who appeared to have been shot. 

The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Metro Squad has been convened to assist in the investigation.

Obituary - Christy Lynn Johnson

Christy Lynn Johnson, 61, Nevada, MO, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Moore-Few Care Center of Nevada following a lengthy battle with cancer. Christy was born on January 13, 1958 in Nevada, MO to Horace Johnson and Louise Joan Johnson.

Christy grew up in Nevada, MO and graduated from Nevada High School Class of 1976. Christy spent most of her life in Nevada, working for a time at Highland Dairy, King’s Jewelry, Heartland, Johnson Grain, and Farmers Ag and Grain. Christy enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and getting lost in a good book.

Survivors include two daughters, Angela Green, Manassas, VA and Andrea Woodruff, Nevada, MO; one son, Christopher King, Nevada, MO; three grandchildren, Corrigan True, Jordyn Green, and Aiden Tumbleson; one sister, Natalie Baker and husband Kendall, Nevada MO; one brother, Brantley Johnson and wife Kellie, Nevada, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Craig Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO with Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada. Following the service, family and friends will gather in the Nevada Elk’s Lodge basement. Friends may call from now until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Search Warrant Served In Nevada

On Wednesday, September 4, 2019, Nevada Police executed a search warrant in the 900 block of N. Main Street in response to reports of illegal drug activity at that location.

Officers had developed information regarding a known male subject at that location that had reportedly been involved in illegal drug activity. Nevada Police had been receiving multiple complaints in regards to the subject in question.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the resident of the home. During the search officers located and seized suspected methamphetamine, and suspected drug paraphernalia. The evidence seized will be sent to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Lab for further analysis.

One subject was taken into custody and transported to the Vernon County Jail for holding. The subject has been identified as follows;

David E Perkey, age 62 of Nevada

On September 4, 2019, the following charges were filed against David Perkey through the Vernon County Associate Court:

Delivery of a Controlled Substance – Class C Felony

Perkey is being held in the Vernon County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash-only bond.

Obituary - Dale Edward Watts

Dale Edward Watts, age 80 of Long Lane, Missouri, formerly of Adrian, Missouri died Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He was born May 1 1939 to Clarence Jacob “Jake” and Opal Arvilia Giddens Watts in Adrian, Missouri.

Dale is survived by his wife, Connie Hammett of Long Lane, Missouri; two sons, Troy Hammett of Long Lane, Missouri and David Watts and significant other Jayne Sisk of Butler, Missouri; two daughters, Amii Boardman and husband Richard of Irvine, California and Debra Hunt and husband Bill of Springfield, Missouri; two brothers, Clarence Watts and significant other Colleen of Qulin, Missouri and Delbert Watts and wife Marian of Butler, Missouri; one sister, Joyce Arnold of Adrian, Missouri; 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Nancy in 2000.

Obituary - James Walter Meech

James Walter Meech, age 62 passed away Monday, September 2, 2019 with his wife, kids and close friends near, on his farm home near Fort Scott, KS, after a battle with Gliosarcoma brain cancer. Jim was born April 18, 1957 in Fort Scott, KS, the son of Dennis Walter and Estella E. (Gier) Meech.

He married Marita Miller on September 8, 1984 in Fort Scott, KS. They have two children, which he was extremely proud of Elizabeth Marie Meech and John W (JW) Meech.

As a young adult, Jim worked in the mechanic shop at Midwestern Distribution, Charlie Griffiths Cattle and also hauled cattle for Bob Walrod at Fort Scott Livestock on weekends. Over the years, he enjoyed pulling his International 1066 farm tractor at local tractor pulls and was proud of his kids competing in pedal tractor pulls, when they were young, at the local, state, national and international levels. Jim beamed with pride when he talked about his kid''s horse and rodeo accomplishments. Farming was deep in Jim''s blood. He was a very successful farmer, as his spent his entire life farming and ranching in Bourbon and Linn County''s.

Beginning after his graduation in 1975 from Fort Scott High School, Jim worked with his family on Triple M Farms, until his dad''s passing in 1992. From 1992 to 2012, Jim was a partner in Meech Brothers Farms. Since 2013, Jim worked/operated Jim Meech Farms with his wife, Marita.

Jim is survived by his wife, Marita, of the home. Daughter, Elizabeth Meech, Borger, TX, and son, JW Meech, Canyon, TX. Mother-in-law Venita Miller, Kincaid, KS. Paternal aunts, Itha Jean and husband, Harold Turntine, and Jewell Ross Topeka, KS. Maternal aunts, Lela Ann Gier, Fort Scott and Geneva Gier, Girard. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis W Meech and his paternal grandparents, Juell Walter Meech and Elsie May Finney Meech, and uncle Billy G. Meech.
Also, his maternal grandparents, Oscar and Lizzie Goff Gier and Aunt Opal Gier, Uncles Charles and Merle Gier.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 7, 2019, 2 pm at the Schneider Funeral Home, Pleasanton, KS. Burial will be in the Glendale Cemetery near Hammond, KS. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 PM September 6, 2019 at the Schneider Funeral Home in Pleasanton, Kansas. Texas truck driver injured in Bates County Crash

On 9/3/19 around 11:45pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a semi truck rollover accident in the northbound lanes of I-49 near mile marker 127.6

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2018 Freightliner driven by 22 year old Lindsey R. Davis of Texas was attempting to avoid a animal in the roadway, overturned coming to rest on the drivers side.

Davis sustained minor injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene of the accident by J's Southland Tow.
