Structure Fire In Nevada

On 12/30/19 around 8:21pm the Nevada Fire Department responded to a structure fire at True Missouri Pecans located at 1122 E. Walnut Street in Nevada.

When fire crews arrived on scene an employee advised there was a smell of smoke in the building and the metal ceiling was discolored. 


The fire was contained to the attic of the building and the fire was quickly knocked down and salvage and overhaul was conducted on the building. 

No one was injured in this fire and the damage was estimated at $125,000 for both building and contents. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Stolen UTV in Barton County

On 12-31-2019 The Barton County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area of SW 50th road and M Hwy in Barton County for a stolen 2009 green in color Polaris Ranger. The victim said the last time he saw it was a few days prior. 

He went to go work cows and it was missing from inside a barn where he kept it. The investigation is ongoing in the theft of the UTV.

Police Chase in Barton County

On 12-31-2019 the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was investigating an unrelated incident in the Kenoma area when Sheriff Shaw attempted a traffic stop on a Dark Gray in color Jeep Cherokee at approximately 11:09am. 

The Jeep continued eastbound on Southeast 20th road and failed to stop. The suspect vehicle about collided with another motorist on SE 20th rd as it passed the motorist trying to flee from the Sheriff. That motorist then choose to also follow the fleeing vehicle. The vehicle then turned Southbound on SE 80th Ln and continued to Southeast 30th road. At Southeast 30th rd it turned back Eastbound. The suspect vehicle then drove through a wooded area on the north side of SE 30th rd and abandoned the vehicle. 

The motorist that followed the fleeing vehicle was able to point out the last turn that was seen that the suspect had made into the wooded area. Deputies and the Sheriff searched the area for the vehicle and suspect. 

At approximately 12:07 pm the vehicle was found hidden in a wooded area about a half mile north of SE 30th rd. The property was searched for a suspect but none was located. 

 Evidence from the vehicle will be sent to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Lab to try and identify the subject that drove and fled from in the vehicle. The vehicle was towed from the scene. The investigation is ongoing into this case.

Obituary - Lenora Smith

Funeral services for Lenora Smith will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri.

Lenora Sue Smith, age 74 of Butler, Missouri died Friday, December 27, 2019 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. She was born September 19, 1945 to Arthur Wesley and Thresia Elizabeth Feugate Voyles in Butler.

Lenora is survived by two sons, Jeff Smith of Butler, Missouri and Curtis Smith and companion Tammy of Adrian, Missouri; three daughters, Donna Nicholson of Joplin, Missouri, Sue Vickers and husband Larry Foster of Warsaw, Missouri and Lisa Scrivner and husband Woody of Appleton City, Missouri; one brother, Kendall Voyles and wife Connie of Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Leona Baldwin of Dallas, Texas, Eveline Shackelford Lamb and Cleta Fern Brown, both of Warrensburg, Missouri; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Thresia Faye Voyles.

Norma Jean “Jody” Tindle, age 88 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, December 29, 2019 at Adrian Manor in Adrian, Missouri. She was born February 5, 1931 to Samuel and Mary Alice Hedges LeeMasters in Butler.

Jody is survived by her son, Gary Tindle of Cypress, Texas; three daughters, Mary Whitworth of Kansas City, Kansas, Donna Marcel and husband Stephen of Platte City, Missouri and Kelly Ann Tindle of Raytown, Missouri; one sister, Joyce Reese of Corpus Christi, Texas; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bobby Joe Tindle; and two daughters, Bobbie Jo Tindle and Diane Leis.


Stolen car found burnt in Barton County

On 12-30-2019 The Barton County Dispatch received a call of a vehicle fire on NW 60th Ln north of V hwy in Barton County. First Responders from the Liberal Fire Department, and the Barton County Ambulance responded to the scene. 

The Barton County Sheriff Mitchell Shaw and Troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol also responded. After the fire was put out by the Liberal Fire the vehicle was towed from the scene. 

With the assistance from the Missouri State Highway Patrol we were able to locate a vehicle identification number on the frame of the vehicle and after running the numbers it was found the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Cherokee County Kansas. The investigation continues in the case.

Obituary - Dennis (Denny) Hemenway

Dennis (Denny) Hemenway age 74, Clinton, Missouri passed away Saturday, December 28, 2019 at his home in Clinton. Fond memories and condolences may be left online at www.vansant-millsfuneralhome.com

A Memorial Service will be on Thursday, January, 2, 2020 at 7pm with visitation one hour prior at Vansant-Mills Chapel, Clinton, Missouri. The family suggests memorial contributions to be made to the Good Shepherd Hospice or Hope House and may be left in care of the funeral home.

Dennis was born in Evansville, Indiana on December 23, 1946 to Charles and Louise (Robertson) Hemenway. He attended high school at Booneville High in Indiana graduating in 1965. After he graduated high school Denny enlisted into the Army National Guard. Denny worked for Peabody Coal Company for 14 years until they closed in 1980. Denny has been the owner of Den Dee's Tavern since 1984. Denny also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Traci Dawn Hemenway.

Denny is survived by his sister, Janet (David) Thompson, Boonville, Indiana, grandchildren, Brandon (Katherine) Martinez, Clinton, Brett Martinez, Clinton and Brittany Martinez, St. Louis, great-grandchildren, Oliver, Camden, Gage and Paisley, niece, Leslie (David) Clauss, River Falls, Wisconsin and nephew Kyle (Christy) Thompson, Greenwood, Indiana.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, Clinton, Missouri.
