Obituary - Norma Jean (Martin) Crain

Norma Jean Crain, 81, Nevada, MO passed away on Saturday January 4, 2020 at Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada, MO. Norma was born June 24th, 1938 in Appleton City, Missouri to William T. Martin and Ida M. (Kennedy) Martin. She married Cleo W. Crain on July 21, 1955 and he preceded her in death on March 30, 1994.

Norma grew up in Appleton City and El Dorado Springs areas and attended school in El Dorado Springs, MO. She went to work for Nelly Don-Junior House in 1960 and worked there 38 years until its closure in 1998. Following the closure, she continued to work for more than decade, working for Community Outreach, the Nevada Public Library and West Central Community Action Agency. She was an avid country music fan and enjoyed travelling with friends and family to watch country music shows. Norma was a member of the Pine Street Baptist Church in Nevada.

Survivors include one son, Casey Crain (Delpha) of Nevada, MO; daughter-in-law, Bernadine George (Bob) of Nevada, MO; five grandchildren, Kelly Love (Jason) of Fort Scott, KS; Jessica Read (David) of Carl Junction, MO; John Post (Kortney) of Bronaugh, MO; Devin Linn of Dayton, OH and Logan Crain of Nevada, MO; four sisters, Grace Jackson of Pittsburg, KS; Marie Fitzwater of Parsons, KS; Janice Cruse of Parsons, KS and Jackie Panek of Parsons, KS; as well as several nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Cleo, Norma was preceded in death by one son, Warren Crain and one brother, George “Tommy” Martin.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO with Pastor Chad Bailey officiating. Committal of ashes will take place next to her husband at Moore Cemetery, Nevada, MO.

Two vehicle accident in Barton County

The Barton County 911 center received a call of an automobile accident at 126 hwy and 43 highway. First responders from the Jasper fire department, Liberal fire department, and Barton County ambulance responded to the scene.

At this time we have no information on injuries. The accident is being investigated by the Missouri state highway patrol. Please if you're driving in the area of the accident drive with caution.

Vernon County Sheriff’s Office K-9 finds drugs hidden in floor, two arrested

Two people have been taken into custody after a search warrant was executed at a residence on E. Stockade Rd in rural Nevada, MO on Friday afternoon.

According to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher, an ongoing investigation of narcotics led to the search warrant and seizure of suspected methamphetamine's

While searching the residence, the Sheriff’s Office K9 alerted to the odor of narcotics in the floor of the residence. 

It was then discovered that part of the flooring was covering a hole that contained the suspected methamphetamine as well as drug paraphernalia. Mosher says, “they tried their best to hide their drugs, but it was not quite good enough for the K9”. 

The suspects have been identified as 41-year-old Amanda Peery, of Nevada and 37-year-old John Peery, of Nevada. 

On Saturday morning, warrants were issued by the Courts charging Amanda and John with Delivery of a Controlled Substance.

Both Amanda and John are being held in the Vernon County Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond.

Entry fee: $60 2-3 man teams
$50 to pot and $10 to big fish


100% payput. Payout depends on places depends on entries. 5 fish limit channel, blues, or flatthead. 5 heaviest fish


Registration: Starts @ 7 am one team member must be there to register and at weight in everyone must have rods out of water at 5 pm and at weight in

Remember the more teams the higher the payouts.

10 or less boats will pay 1st thru 3rd
More than that will pay as 10 to 15 boats 4th place and 15 or more pay up to 5th place
Working on getting more sponsors to sweeten the pots. With prizes and more $ for higher payouts.

Rod and Reel only.

1.All state and local regulators must be followed.
2 Time will be from 8am to 5pm Registration starts at 6am with captains meeting and rules to follow.
3. Consist of 2-3 man teams or (may fish solo), but no more than 6 rods in water at one time.
4.Rod and Reel only. You may fish from bank or boat. No leaving of the lake. Once you setup.
5. All live wells will be checked before anyone gets on water.
6. All fish must be alive at weight in. No more than 5 fish in boat at weight in.
7. We all are out here to have fun and win money of course to respect the fellow fisherman and dont crowd them. Stay atleast 50 yards
8. Absolutely no prefishing lake 8 hrs prior to tournament. I will be watching. If caught cheating of any means will result in disqualification and forfeit of your entry fee. Just trying to keep it fair and fun for everyone. Yes bait fiahing is aloud before just no catfishing.

Peculiar Police Department seeking public assistance



The Peculiar Police Department in seeking the public's assistance in locating a suspect vehicle involved in the theft of an enclosed trailer. The 6 X 11, white in color enclosed trailer was reported stolen from the 20905 South Peculiar Drive on 12/26/2019. At the time of the theft the trailer has Missouri license 91F-3DG on it.

The suspect vehicle is believed to be an older Dodge Dakota, predominately green in color with a driver’s side front fender and door possibly primer gray.

Anyone having information regarding this vehicle, persons associated with the vehicle or the stolen trailer are encouraged to contact the Peculiar Police Department.
