Vernon County Sheriff's Office LT Travis Cole graduates FBI-LEEDA Executive Leadership program

Patrol Lt Travis Cole received his TRILOGY certificate after graduating from the 336th Executive Leadership academy FBI-LEEDA. Lt Cole began taking the leadership training in July and completed all three levels of training to receive his TROLOGY award. The three levels of certification included Supervisor Leadership, Command Leadership and Executive Leadership training. 

The week-long classes were spread out over a six-month period to allow working members of law enforcement in supervisor capacities to attend without being gone for a long period of time. Lt Cole said “I want to thank Sheriff Mosher and the FBI-LEEDA program for allowing me the opportunity to attend this training. The training I received is very valuable and a priceless tool that all law enforcement leaders should have.” Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher presented Lt Cole with his TRILOGY award on Wednesday and said this marked the beginning of a goal he has had for some time. 

“I think every member of law enforcement that is in an upper-level management position should have this training. It not only teaches good leadership skills and values, but it takes a good look at the administrative side of law enforcement, the community relations aspect, and the policy and procedure process for agencies.

” Mosher said a large portion of LT Cole’s class was paid for on a grant he submitted last summer and that he hopes to continue sending his administrative staff to this training. “I will definitely be applying for grants again this year and sending more of our staff to this training.”

Town Hall meeting in Rich Hill next month

Two vehicle accident in Vernon County

On 1/29/20 around 7:35am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Vernon County responded to a two vehicle accident in the northbound lanes of I-49 around 5 miles south of Nevada.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2005 Cadillac CTS driven by 60 year old Barbara L. Simmons of Hughesville, Missouri lost control and slid into the path of the 2005 Peterbilt 379 driven by 57 year old Roger D. Lee of Golden City, Missouri.

Barbara L. Simmons sustained minor injuries in this accident and she was transported by ambulance to Nevada Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The Cadillac was towed from the scene of the crash by TCB Tow of Nevada. 

Peculiar Missouri Police Department is seeking assistance

The Peculiar Missouri Police Department is seeking assistance in identifying the W/M subject and vehicle in the attached photos. The subject and vehicle are both associated with an ongoing criminal investigation. The vehicle is described as an older teal green/blue minivan, possibly a Honda Odyssey. 

The minivan has damage to the front bumper cover as can be seen on the photo. The subject is a white male, slightly balding on the top back of his head, he is wearing glasses that are missing the side ear piece on the left side.

Obituary - Trudy Eilene Proffitt

Trudy Eilene Proffitt died peacefully at home in Pleasanton, Kansas, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, January 27, 2020.

Trudy was born on August 19, 1943, in Olathe, Kansas, the youngest of three children to Florence E and William Eldon Forrest Endecott. A lifelong resident of Kansas, Trudy was raised in a loving and Godly family. She graduated from Columbus High School in May 1961 and married her high school sweetheart Donald Proffitt on June 4, 1961. Together they shared more than 58 years of marriage and raised four children.

Trudy and Don started their married life in West Mineral, KS, close to their families. After living in Olathe and West Mineral for a number of years, they moved the Pleasanton area in 1972 and found their forever home. Trudy was very active in the community and school. She was a homemaker as well as an excellent typist. For a short time, she and her sister-in-law, Sue, owned the Flower Boutique. Having gone back to work in the 1980s, after the family had grown, she cherished memories of her time working for Fundcraft Publishing with David and Charlene Bradley. Later, she worked alongside Don at Proffitt's Tire and Lube Center in Pleasanton. In the 1990s, Trudy also worked for the city of Pleasanton as both Deputy City Clerk and City Clerk. She then worked for SEK Mental Health until her retirement.

From a young age, Trudy loved music and picked up her father's knack for learning and playing music by ear. Not only did she sing for many church services, over the years she taught herself to play piano, guitar and even the accordion. Her love of music stretched to dancing. For years, she and Don danced nearly every weekend and met many close friends at country western and polka dances around Southeast Kansas. 

Trudy was an avid fan of the Lonesome Cowboys, the band her son Mark helped form. Trudy and Don followed them everywhere for the 12 years they played. Fitting for Trudy, she made friends with everyone she met along the way. And, of course, she became like a second mom to the other members of the band.

Trudy was a constant caregiver. Whether it was making sure her kids were well and had everything they needed to be happy or spoiling her grandkids and great grandkids whenever she possibly could. She was also a wonderful friend and daughter to her mother when she most needed it. She took care of friends too - Becky Patience and Dawn Helmert - whom she loved so much. Trudy was also a great baker. There was rarely a time when she wasn't baking a cherry pie, her delicious homemade 'light rolls' or cookies for someone. She also loved to read novels and seemingly always had a book she was about to finish, ready to be shared with a friend or to be donated to the library.

Trudy and Don made many trips to visit friends and family across many states. She loved her trips to see her youngest son Corey, wherever he was living, often taking the grandkids along as they grew up. Her and Don's last vacation was an Alaskan cruise to celebrate her 75th birthday.

Survivors include husband Don of the home; daughters Tuesdee Stark (Duane) of Pleasanton, KS and Tracee Otterstein (Mark) of Kansas City, MO; and sons Mark Proffitt of Linn Valley, KS; and Corey Proffitt (Rod Sisson) of New York, NY, and a 'special son' Mike Kendrick of Marshall, AR. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, Destinee, Arielle, Taylor, Alexis, Ethan, Bailey, Austin, Jadon and Brennan; and eight great-grandchildren; and brothers Larry Endecott (Kathy) and Stanley Endecott (Margaret) all of Olathe, KS and numerous extended relatives whom she loved dearly. For the past 11 years, Trudy and Don attended the First Baptist Church of Mound City. She loved and was loved by so many. She left us too soon, and her beautiful smile and spirit will be missed.

Funeral Service will be at 1 pm, Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Mound City First Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm, Thursday, January 30, 2020 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. Burial will take place in Battlefield Cemetery. FBLA will be hosting pink night on February 4, 2020 at the basketball game between the Appleton City Bulldogs and the Drexel Bobcats. Game time is 5:30 p.m. Games will be available, t-shirts for sale, cookies for sale, and a raffle for two tickets to Dolly Pardon's Stampede in Branson, MO. Raffle tickets are available from FBLA members before the game and at the game for $ 1.00 for a ticket or 6 tickets for $ 5.00. The drawing will be at half time of the game and you do not need to be present to win. All proceeds will go to breast cancer. The theme for this year’s Pink Night is Hoops for Hope.

Montrose VFW Post 8820 will host a Coyote Tournament February 8-9, 2020. Registration is February 7 starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Montrose VFW. There will be $100 entry fee per team (3 man team is max). There will also be a $5 side pot for the mangiest dog. Coyotes may be taken by all legal methods as determined by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Check in is Sunday, February 9 at 3:00 p.m. (If you are late you will not be counted). There will be cash payouts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd laces and the biggest dog. All participants will be entered to win a Mossberg 590 shotgun (all state laws apply). Appleton City Elementary PTO will be hosting the 3rd Annual Little Ladies Dance on Saturday, February 15, 2020 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the elementary gym. This dance is for all little ladies pre-K through 5th grade in our community and their special guy in their life (dad, grandpa, uncle, family friend, etc.) to come out for a night of dancing, snacks, pictures and overall good fun. Tickets are $20 for a couple (add $5 per additional sibling attending). No RSVP is needed and tickets will be purchased at the door the night of the dance. The Appleton City Museum will provide a stroll down memory lane with a Photo Display during the SQC Celebration. Over 150 pictures will be on display of businesses, buildings, area occupations, leaders of the community and basically pictures of the past (anything that isn't current). If anyone would like to donate an 8x10 photo to the Museum for this event, they will be glad to display it. However, they ask for prints that will become the property of the Museum in preserving AC History. The deadline to submit will be April 1, 2020. They may be mailed to: A.C. Museum, 305 N. Maple, ACMO 64724 or you can drop them off workdays at the museum, which are some Wednesday afternoons during the winter.

There will be a community play held during the Sesquicentennial event in June 2020. Abby Sage and Kamber Grishow are producing and directing the production and would like to formally extend their invitation for all those who wish to be a part of the event to please contact them. Whether you are interested in acting, assisting with costumes or set design, or simply want to offer your help with the process but don’t know how, please let them know. Rules for Sesquicentennial Costume Contest, Wednesday, June 10, 2020 are as follows: Contestants must be in 1870’s period costumes. Preregistration will be 7:00 p.m. at stage with the contest at 7:30 p.m. Age groups will be: Children 0-10, Children 10-18, Men and Women over 18 and Groups. 1st - 3rd place prizes will be awarded in each category.


Once again DbarJ Quilts Etc will be sponsoring the Elva Gwinn Huffman Essay Contest for non-profit groups. Any non-profit group can write an

essay about their group, their good works, how they would use the quilt to help them raise money for their cause. It is best if you keep it to no more than 2 pages. Due date for the essays in March 31, 2020. They will be read and the quilt will be given out on April 2, which is Elva's birthday. On January 7, Area 7 FFA officers met in Sedalia, MO for the annual Greenhand Motivation Conference. Every year, each chapter within our area sends their first year FFA members or Greenhands, to take part in this leadership conference. The conference began with the opening ceremonies conducted by the Area Officers and was followed by a skit presented by the State Officers. Greenhands were divided into several groups where they were able to hear a motivational speech given by State Officers. To conclude the day’s events, all members gathered together and Area Officers gave the closing ceremonies. These conferences are very important because it may be one the first times new members can really see what they can accomplish through FFA and gives them more drive to pursue various goals and opportunities within FFA at Chapter, District and State levels.


Knitting classes, led by Ann Barclay, have resumed at the Appleton City Library on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. Come join them and see what you might learn or get support in projects you are working on. The volunteers from Living Waters Ranch, Gene Holtgrewe, Jay Binyon and Joyce Brown, were very happy to usher in the new year with the first of 12 monthly Special Touch Day Camps for adults with developmental delays or disabilities and their staff/caregivers. These Day Camps are hosted monthly at no charge to enrich the lives of the campers and provide a day out to experience fun activities. The day camps are held at the Osceola Assembly of God Church and include a meal and seasonal/holiday activities.

This month the campers were blessed by Officer Hilty and Officer Hodges from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, along with their respective search dogs, Havik and Cormi. Officer Hilty started the demo by introducing their canine partners, then everyone watched, and was amazed by the ability of the dogs to search and find drugs that the officers had previously hidden throughout the church gym. After demonstrating their abilities, Havik and Cormi were allowed to walk around and be petted by the campers. The officers answered many questions and shared very interesting information about the raising, training, and use of the canines to assist law enforcement officers in locating illegal drugs.

The next day camp will be held on February 13, at the Osceola Assembly of God Church, at 10:00 a.m. The camp will include decorating a Valentine bag, exchanging Valentines, a craft activity, and spaghetti luncheon. The use of the local church has enabled LWR to expand the day camps to year round, starting in 2017. A huge thank you to them for allowing the use of their beautiful facility. The day camps start at 10:00 a.m. and are normally over by 1:00 p.m. Each camp is planned around the season or holiday and would not be possible if not for the donations received by local organizations, businesses, churches, and individuals. Some of the annual donors are Knights of Columbus-Clinton, Truman Lake Community Foundation, Easy Living INC, Osceola Assembly of God Church, Roscoe Christian Church, Collins Christian Church, Hawthorn Bank, Kottwitz Fertilizer Co., and Tri County Publishing.

Currently field trips are being scheduled out to the ranch for area schools, churches, and organizations. Activities at the ranch include fishing, giant slide, zipline, leadership course, and many other outdoor activities. Field trips can be faith based or secular, and help to fulfill the mission of LWR that children/families would develop a love of the outdoors and choose to be more physically active.
