Obituary - June Callahan

Graveside services for June Callahan will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2020 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555). There is no visitation.

Alta June Callahan, age 89 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at Adrian Manor in Adrian, Missouri. She was born June 3, 1930 to John Russell and Alta Belle McKee Cantrell in Austin, Missouri.

June is survived by three sons, Jay Scott Underwood and Jeannie of Butler, Missouri, Neil Underwood and wife Tammy of Ft. Scott, Kansas and Richard Underwood and wife Donita of Warsaw, Missouri; one stepson, Gary Callahan of Liberty, Missouri; a stepdaughter, Carol Taylor and husband John of Amoret, Missouri; two brothers, Calvin Cantrell of Spokane Washington and Charles Cantrell and wife Barbara of Adrian, Missouri; 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gerald in 2019; and several brothers and sisters.

From the Linn County Kansas Sheriff’s Office

In an effort to reduce the risk of unnecessary exposure of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) to our deputies and citizens, effective immediately, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office will be cancelling Vehicle Inspections until further notice. 

We will continue to monitor the situation and will share information as appropriate. 

The Kansas Highway Patrol is also suspending Vehicle Inspections starting March 23rd, 2020 for a minimum of 2 weeks. This is an effort to keep Kansas residents healthy and we are doing our part to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Obituary - Joan Bodenhamer

Joan Bodenhamer, age 81 of Drexel Mo. Passed away Tuesday, March 17th 2020 at her home, in the care of Hospice and surrounded by her family. Private family graveside services will be held in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel, Missouri.

Florence Joan Martino Bodenhamer was born on February 23, 1939 in Monmouth Ks. the oldest of three children to Alex A. Martino and Maretta Bell Frisbie Martino. The family moved to Drexel when Joan was 15 yrs old and this is where she met and later married her best friend Ramon Bodenhamer. They were united in marriage on September 3rd,1957 and to this union three children were born and many foster children were raised, one even being adopted by them. She enjoyed being a wife, Momma Jo to her children and Grandma Jo to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joan also enjoyed crocheting, going to many garage sales, and thrift stores. She love to sew and collect purses .

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Rosie Buck

Joan is survived by her husband and best friend Ramon (Bodie)Bodenhamer, her children, Brad Bodenhamer (Patti), Mitzi Kimbrough (Kevin), Tina Crumby, and Butch Bodenhamer.

Grand children: Christopher Bodenhamer, Amber Bodenhamer Brandon Bodenhamer (Amber Ann), Melissa Bodenhamer, Chad Kimbrough (Jessica), Monica Kimbrough (Rob Whistle-Thien), Justin Kimbrough (Kelsey Irvin), Cody Crumby, Brittany Mills, Lexi Bodenhamer, Danielle Bodenhamer ,and Jessie Bodenhamer

News from the Bates County USDA offices

The Bates County USDA offices will remain open for phone appointments, but offices locked until further notice.  To call FSA, NRCS or Rural Development, please call 660-679-6112.






From the Butler R-5 School District

The Butler R5 School District will be closed until April 6th.  During this time, meals will be available for any resident of our district age 18 and under.  

Meals will be available at the grade school for pick up from 11-1 starting Monday, March 23rd.  

Cars should form a line in the pick up lane and will be directed from there.

At this time all district facilities are closed.  Students and teachers will be notified of a small window of time to enter the building and pick up personal belongings. 

Student safety is always our first priority and we appreciate your flexibility during this difficult time for everyone.  


Next week we will reassess the situation and if it looks like a longer closure is needed, we will begin preparations for off-site learning.  Building specific announcements will be coming soon.

Effective today, March 19, Thursday, we will continue to keep our dining room closed. We are trying to take all precautionary measures for the safety of our employees and customers.
