From the desk of Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson

I have been consistently asked questions by members of the public about what PPE means and what can people do to help protect our first responders. To educate the public PPE means Personal Protective Equipment. This means face mask, latex/nitrile gloves, hand sanitizers, protective gowns etc. We are being told Law Enforcement needs to procure those items from the open market through normal vendors. We have exhausted all remedies known to us to obtain those items. We are being advised by our state partners that first responders/law Enforcement is last on the list to receive PPEs from the national stockpile.

With this in mind we have changed policies on contact with citizen for non emergency calls for service. We have and will continue to respond to our citizens law enforcement needs. We just ask that you understand that we will do our best to practice the social distancing, not shaking hands, etc. The Sheriffs Office has over 60 essential employees and will continue to have continuity of service. All life threatening calls for service will be handled the same as always.

We ask for your safety and ours please practice good hand washing, limit your unnecessary travel.

If you know of any elderly or compromised immunity individuals who may be afraid to go get medications etc. Please let us know so we can check on them or find services to assist them.

If anyone has leads for safety mask, sanitizing wipes, hand sanitizers we would welcome that information.

Sheriff Chad Anderson

Obituary - Robert "Bob" L. Gowin

Robert “Bob” Gowin, 81, Nevada, MO, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at his daughter’s home surrounded by his family. Bob, the baby of the family, was born on February 16, 1939 at the family home in rural Nevada to Leslie E. and Myrtle I. (Humbert) Gowin. He married Patricia A. Waitley on July 16, 1960 in Miami, OK and she preceded him in death on June 21, 1992.

Bob was well known for his craftsmanship of building, designing and remodeling everything from homes, barns, cabinets, furniture, and the grandkids’ playhouse. Bob’s motto was always, “If the job wasn’t done right, it wasn’t worth doing”. He had longtime partnerships with Richard Klump and Dave Franz both who preceded him in death.

Bob was a lifetime member of the Nevada Elks Lodge #564 and Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming, playing pool and cards, dancing, and cheering for his Chiefs. He also loved his new trucks, old westerns, his four-wheeler, singing to the crazy coon dogs, and was always up for a good BBQ, fish fry, dessert, or a cold beer.

Survivors include two daughters, Shelly Minor (Phil), and Kimberly Gowin; two grandsons, Dustin Dulier (Alice), and Justin Dulier (Kalinda); three great-grandchildren, Hanna Rae, Makayla Dawn, and Justin Caden Dulier; one sister, Margie Dulier-Fisher; and one sister-in-law, Carol Weeks. He was preceded in death by his “Ol’ Lady” Patricia of 31 years of marriage; his parents; siblings, Glenn Gowin, William “Billy” Gowin, Frances Dixon (Alonzo), Clayton Gowin (Betty), Fern Lynch (Floyd), Lucille Shumaker (Harold), Leslie “Junie” Gowin (Marianne); son-in-law, Randy Dulier; and in-laws, Orville and Emily Waitley, Larry and Pat Waitley and Ernie Weeks. And don’t forget his long-time fishing buddy, Art Sewell. For the first time, Art had to wait on Bobby. The river is up, the worms are dug, the fish are biting, and they have gone fishing!!

Private graveside services to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Arrangements are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home. At 1:00 p.m. the family will receive friends at Shelly Minor’s residence for a good “old time” BBQ and a cold beer. “Tall Tales” are welcome.

Those who wish may contribute in Bob’s memory to the Vernon County Youth Fair or the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation in care of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Update from the Bates County Health Center

March 22, 2020
Situational update regarding COVID-19

1)  At this time, the individual that was the first confirmed positive case in Bates County continues to remain in his home in Butler and is strictly adhering to the CDC guidance regarding quarantine/isolation which decreased exposure to others.  He was tested approximately 9 days ago and his symptoms continue to diminish.  As he remains in his home, he does not pose a threat of spreading this disease to the community.

2)  As we hope most of you are aware, a statewide social distancing order will go into effect at 12:01 A.M. Monday, March 23, 2020.  This order states that every person in the State of Missouri shall:
*avoid social gatherings of more than ten (10) people.
*avoid eating or drinking at restaurants, bars or food courts; however, the use of drive-thru, pickup or delivery options is allowed.
*not visit nursing homes, long-term care facilities, retirement homes or assisted living homes unless to provide critical assistance.
*schools shall remain closed.
This order does not prohibit people from visiting a variety of places, including grocery stores, gas stations, parks and banks as long as long as necessary precautions are taken and maintained to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.
Local public health authorities are hereby directed to carry out and enforce the provisions of this Order by means of civil proceedings.

3)  Employers, please note that the CDC guidance states “do not require a healthcare provider’s note for employees who are sick with acute respiratory illness to validate their illness or return to work, as healthcare provider offices and medical facilities may be extremely busy and not able to provide such documentation in a timely way.”  Resources for testing remain EXTREMELY limited in our area therefore it is NOT possible to test every employee that has been off for an illness of any kind before they can return to work.

4)  Continue to take everyday prevention actions such as:
*wash your hands often with soap and water
*use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water is not available
*cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
*to the extent possible, avoid touching high-touch surfaces in public places
*avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, etc.
*clean and disinfect frequently
*avoid all non-essential travel
*observe social distancing
*stay home if you are sick
*contact your primary care provider if you are sick and symptoms worsen

5)  Most of all—BE KIND!

News From Adrian Lanes

Confirming the Governor’s ban on groups of 10 or more. While he did not directly call for the closure of businesses, we find that continued operations will not be feasible for our operation.

While we actually closed March 19-20 due to health concerns for some of our patrons, after this directive we will remain CLOSED until the all-clear signal is given. All 2019-20 bowling leagues will be suspended during this period.

IF we must remain closed through the end of our scheduled season, we will distribute all prize monies prior to the end of April, and call season complete as of the last day we bowled.

Thank you for your continued support
