Learn more about our feathered friends...

News from Poplar Heights Living History Farm

This year we’re featuring one of the oldest chicken breeds and a modern cross-breed that was bred for egg production and small farms.

The Silkie is believed to date back as far as the Chinese Han Dynasty in 206 BC.  They were mentioned by Marco Polo around 1290 on his journey across Europe and the Far East. They were accepted into the American Poultry Association in 1874.

Sometimes called Fluff-balls, they have 5 toes instead on the usual 4.  They lay small to medium cream colored eggs.  They are calm, friendly and docile and love to forage.

The Golden Comet is a cross between a New Hampshire rooster and a White Rock hen.  They are heavy egg producers with large to extra large brown eggs with dark yellow/orange yolks.  Comets are laid back hen who are extremely friendly and let you pick them up.  They follow Gail everywhere when she comes to gather eggs and feed.

Come learn more about these great hens at Poplar Heights Living History Farm and especially at our Summer Festival August 8 & 9.
