Vernon County Health Department has confirmed 3 new positive cases of COVID-19

Confirmed COVID-19 cases
Vernon County Health Department has confirmed 3 new positive cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) bringing our total confirmed cases to 21. Two of these cases are symptomatic and one is asymptomatic all cases are isolated at home. The families of these cases are quarantined at home per CDC guidelines. All 3 cases are close contacts to known positive cases.

The case investigation and contact tracing has been completed. The Vernon County Health Dept staff has contacted anyone who has been listed as a close contact to the positive cases. Those contacts will be quarantined at home.

Please continue to monitor your health. If you develop any symptoms contact your primary care provider or urgent care for further evaluation and testing. Symptoms include:
• Cough
• Fever
• Shortness of breath
• Chills
• Muscle aches
• Sore throat
• New loss of taste or smell

Individuals should continue to practice social distancing, clean/disinfect any high touched surfaces, wash their hands with soap and water routinely, use hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available and avoid touching your face (especially eyes, nose & mouth). It is up to each and every one of us to stop the spread of this disease.

CALL before going to a clinic, urgent care, or ER if you feel you need to be evaluated

Close Contact means: 6 ft or less for 15 minutes or more with a positive case


Obituary - Frederick David "Fred" Clickner

Frederick David "Fred" Clickner of Garden City, Missouri was born August 11, 1929 in Smithville, Missouri the son of Lee Ray and Anna May (Penry) Clickner. He departed this life on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at his home surrounded by love and family at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 19 days.

On July 10, 1960 Fred was united in marriage to Clara Fay Beebe in Butler, Missouri.

Fred started farming in 1955 and moved to Garden City in 1966. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War from 1953 to 1955 with the Military Police in Baltimore, Maryland. Fred served on the Board with the M.F.A. Oil Company, the M.F.A. Exchange, Cass County Pork Producers and the Garden City Fire Department. He was a 1947 graduate of Salisbury, Missouri High School and had lived in Butler, Missouri before moving to Garden City. Fred was a devoted husband and father. He loved farming and through the years had made many wonderful friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles and a sister, Louise Drysdale.

Fred is survived by his wife, Clara F. Clickner of the home; his son, David Clickner (Jayne), Garden City, Missouri; 2 step-grandchildren, Mike Campbell (Amy), Cody Campbell (Sarah); 6 step-great-grandchildren, Caden, Brody, Wyatt, Cyrus, Brinley and Colton; other relatives and a host of friends.

Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 3, 2020 at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri with Military Honors.

Mr. Clickner will lie in state from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2020 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri.

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Kindred Hospice or the Show Me Christian Youth Home.


Obituary - Barbara Roxanne (Boyd) Moore

Barbara Roxanne Moore, 80, Nevada, MO passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at her home in Nevada. Barbara was born June 19, 1940 in Nevada to Murl W. and Lois M. (Bryan) Boyd.

Barbara attended Nevada High School Class of 1958. She lived in Salina, KS while working at Raytheon-Beechcraft as a sheet metal worker in the construction of aircraft. 

Following her retirement in 2002 she returned to Nevada and has continued to reside here since that time. Memberships include the First Baptist Church in Nevada, where she was baptized, was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, and was a Nevada Regional Medical Center Auxiliary volunteer. Barbara enjoyed gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had many friendships that lasted throughout her lifetime.

She is survived by three daughters, Sherri Krug, Oatman, AZ, Kim Beran, Nevada, MO, Angela Cearley (Charles), Nevada, MO; eight grandchildren, Jeffery Humphries, Jason Taylor Joshua Norris, Tyler Beran, Paige Beran, Adam Cearley, Jacob Cearley, Samantha Stone; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her “furry daughter” Ellie.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Memorials are suggested in her memory to the Ronald McDonald House in Joplin, MO or the Greater American Cancer Society c/o Ferry Funeral Home.


Obituary -Patricia Ann Weaver

Patricia Ann Weaver , 69, of Peculiar, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2020. 

Patricia was a 1969 graduate of North Hardin High School, and enjoyed gardening; spending time with other gardeners at the Clay Potters Gardening Club. 

Patricia was also a member of the Peculiar United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for many years. She traveled a lot with her mother vacationing to various destinations, and to the First Armor Division Reunions. Patricia also raised monarch butterflies and loved spending time with her family and friends and a occasional glass of wine.

She was born on March 1, 1951 in Fort Knox , Kentucky to Conway Cotner and Anna (Haas) Jones. She is preceded in death both her father, Conway Cotner, step father, Luther C. Jones and her mother, Anna Jones 

Patricia is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Danny Lynn Weaver, sons, Brian (Vivia) Weaver, and Brad (Jennifer) Weaver, her numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren that loved her and knew her as "Grandma Honey"; and her brother, Terry (Carolyn ) Cotner.

There will be a private family service on Tuesday, June 30th at Newcomer Funeral Home Southwest Chapel. The family will hold a combined memorial service for both her and her mother in Kentucky at a later date. They will also be celebrating her life in Peculiar, Missouri at a later date.

Bates County Coroner rules death a homicide

Wanda Czechan was a 57 year-old female who lived in Amoret, Missouri. On February 17, 2020 she was the victim of an assault at her residence. Mrs. Czechan was attended by emergency medical personnel and subsequently transported to a hospital in Kansas City. She passed away April 25, 2020 at a rehabilitation facility.

I was notified by the Bates County Sheriff’s Office and investigated the death of Mrs. Czechan. An autopsy was conducted and reports of the incident by law enforcement were reviewed as well as Mrs. Czechan’s inpatient medical records throughout her hospital course.


My investigation concluded yesterday, June 30. I have ruled the death of Wanda Czechan a homicide. My investigation has been forwarded to the Bates County Prosecuting Attorney.

Dr. Mike Slagle is officially the new superintendent of the Ray-Pec School District

You may have seen him in the community or met him at a meeting this spring, but today, July 1, Dr. Mike Slagle is officially the new superintendent of the Ray-Pec School District.

He comes to Ray-Pec from the Blue Valley School District in Overland Park, Kan. Slagle had been with the Blue Valley School District for 25 years, most recently as deputy superintendent since 2015.

He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Nebraska Christian College and a bachelor’s degree in social studies education from Wayne State College. He received his master’s degree in urban planning and policy from the University of Iowa and his doctorate in organizational and education leadership from the University of Kansas.

In selecting Slagle as superintendent, Ray-Pec school board members said they were impressed with his experience, leadership skills, financial expertise, experience working with a growing district, experience in strategic planning, and knowledge of initiatives currently under way in the district. He also has been involved in successful bond and levy campaigns.

Dr. Slagle and his wife, Jenny, live in Raymore. They have two sons: Luke, who attends Missouri Baptist University, and Micah, who attends Missouri State University.

Slagle replaces Dr. Kari Monsees, who retired at the end of June from Ray-Pec to start work as the deputy commissioner of the Division of Financial and Administrative Services for the Department Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
