Clinton School District COVID-19 Update:

The Clinton School District has received confirmation of 5 positive COVID-19 cases. The buildings affected are Henry Elementary, Clinton Intermediate School, Clinton Middle School and Clinton High School. This brings the total number of active cases to 16 (13 of which are Clinton School District individuals).

The Henry County Health Center is in the process of conducting contact tracing, most of which is complete.

The District has been in constant communication, and cooperating fully, with the Henry County Health Center as they perform the necessary contact tracing and we will continue to follow their guidance.

The Henry County Health Center is responsible for contacting students/staff who need to quarantine due to close contact with the individual who tested positive. If you are not contacted by the Henry County Health Center or the school district instructing your child to quarantine, your child can continue to attend school.

The Clinton School District is following cleaning and disinfecting procedures so that schools can remain open.

Clinton School District students, staff, and community members should continue to use the Daily Self-Screening Checklist found below and should stay home if displaying symptoms of COVID-19.

As we navigate situations such as this, please be assured that the health and safety of our students and staff are of utmost importance.

Obituary - Carol Lee Claspill

Carol Lee Claspill, 76, of Nevada, MO went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 20, 2020 due to complications related to Covid-19. Carol was born on January 21, 1944 to Roy and Lucille (Davis) Claspill in Montevallo, MO. Carol graduated from El Dorado Springs, MO High School in 1962.

Carol met his wife, Loretta Sue Kutina, the love of his life at the White Grill in Nevada. They married July 21, 1972 and went on the have 1 child together, Amy Cameron. Prior to marriage to Loretta, Carol had wed and had a son, Darrin Lee Duffey of Harrisonville.

Carol and Loretta had a lot of fun together. You could find them at the Nevada Speedway every Saturday night where Carol was the flagman for many years and Loretta counted laps. They loved old fast cars, country dancing, bowling, snow ski trips and playing golf together until Loretta became to ill with cancer to do so. Carol could fix just about anything and who the family called upon when something broke. He liked classic cars and enjoyed doing body work and restoring a classic when he was younger.

Carol was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything else, something he often mentioned. He was unendingly proud of all his grandchildren and always tried his best to support them. Carol could often be found at a golf tournament watching his granddaughter Emree Cameron. Emree’s funniest memory of him was when he went to Augusta National to watch her compete in the National DCP competition. Standing near hole #1 Carol could not believe how beautiful the grass was and didn’t think it was real. Right there he got down and all fours to check and said, “yep, it’s real.” Carol enjoyed riding the 4-wheeler with all his grandchildren, spoiling them with sweet treats and talking to them about Jesus.

Throughout his entire life, Carol held an unwavering faith in God which he shared with those who surrounded him. Carol really wanted to make sure everyone knew Jesus Christ. Carol was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta; his parents; brother Lyle Claspill; and brother Tom Claspill. He is survived by his children Amy Cameron (Eric) of Nevada; Darrin Duffey (Harrisonville); Grandchildren Emree & Ty Cameron of Nevada; Brent of Peculiar; Silas & Phaedra Duffey of Harrisonville and Great Grandson Bentley Duffey of Peculiar. Brother Ron (Las Vegas); Brother Darrel (Doris) of Clinton and sister Sandy Foreman (Bill) of Raymore, MO. Carol had many nieces and nephews who he loved very much and who have many fond memories of their Uncle Carol.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and per Carol’s final days request, there will be no funeral services at this time. Carol did not want anyone to become ill at his expense. The family plans on a Celebration of Life in the Spring of 2021.

Carol had requested donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in lieu of flowers sent in c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

Rich Hill School District COVID-19 Update

The Rich Hill High School has two staff members who have tested positive with COVID19. All close contacts have been notified. Currently the high school has 5 active COVID19 cases, 32 individuals quarantined, and the elementary doesn’t have any active cases and 4 students quarantined. Tomorrow is our last day this week. 

We are looking forward to the Thanksgiving Break. Please rest up, stay healthy, and if you have any symptoms, go get tested. We look forward to having everyone back healthy on November 30th.

A few of the storms south of the Missouri River may be strong- potentially capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph.

Snow Blankets North Central Missouri

Snow has mostly moved out of North Central MO. Let's look at the latest snow totals for today. 

Areas north of Kirksville saw around 2" while the KC metro saw mostly sleet to a trace of snow. 

Snow will not stick around as temps remain above freezing and rain returns Tuesday.

Obituary - Gregory “Greg” Steven Guss

Gregory “Greg” Steven Guss, age 60, of Belton, Missouri, passed away on Friday, November 20, 2020.

A celebration of Greg’s life will be held with a visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2020 at Cullen Funeral Home, Raymore, Missouri 612 W. Foxwood Dr. Raymore, Missouri 64083

Greg was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 11, 1960 to Robert John Guss and Arlene Gladys (Engel) Guss. In life Greg enjoyed many things. He loved music and particularly favored reggae, blues, Latin music, classic rock, and alternative rock. Some of his favorite bands were Blue October, Fools Face, Shooting Star, The Rainmakers, and The Elders. Greg often attended concerts and he proudly supported local Kansas City bands and the local Irish Festivals. He attended many local sporting events. He was a huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and KU basketball. When attending these events Greg would collect any memorabilia, he could such as concert T’s, hats, CD’s, ticket stubs, and team gear. Greg loved all things Sci-fi especially Star Trek and watching the NASA channel. He avidly read the Kansas City Star, Sci-fi books, and the Smithsonian Magazine.

Greg was a very intelligent individual often winning any trivia game he played. While he was living in Monterey, California, family members would often call him to settle disagreements on any subject. Greg loved Sunday breakfast at the Belton VFW, weekly meals at the Family Cabin, orange chicken and noodles from Panda Express, Spicy Bloody Mary’s from Cardinal Cove at the Lake of the Ozarks, and spicing up everything he ate with Cavender's Greek Seasoning because his allergies caused a loss of smell and taste. All in all, Greg spent his whole life doing what made him happy. Always a positive person, he had a great energy and a kindness to all around him.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Arlene Guss. He leaves behind his four siblings: Donna Shearer (Jim), William “Bill” Guss (Nancy Croskey), John Guss (Patricia), and Linda Guss (Todd McClanahan); eight nieces and nephews: Dana Justice (Carlos), Perry Shearer, Mitchell Jeck (Dionne), Anthony Guss, Kevin Guss, and Dylan, Ace, and Eileen Smith; and eight great nieces and nephews: Seth and Summer Justice, Thea and Gemma Jeck, Josh Duncan, and Piper, Addysen, and Colten Guss.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Parkinson's Foundation.

Obituary - John Matthew Laflen

John Matthew Laflen, 84, of Buffalo Center, IA, passed away on Friday, November 20, 2020 in Mason City, IA. John was born on August 31, 1936 to Allen and Mary (Brown) Laflen at their home in Milo, MO. He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Ann Wolf, on December 27, 1958 in Nevada, MO, and she survives of the home.

John graduated from Bronaugh High School in 1954. He earned his BS and MS degrees in Agricultural Engineering at the University of Missouri and his Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering at Iowa State University. John received many awards for his research including the 2007 John Deere Gold Medal award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in recognition for his work on the development of a new generation of erosion prediction technologies that have advanced soil and water conversation. He was an adjunct professor and research leader in soil erosion, water quality and conservation tillage at Iowa State University, a laboratory directory and research leader in the USDA-ARS National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory at Purdue University and a research agricultural engineer in surface drainage at Louisiana State University.

John was a wonderful father and grandfather who loved to encourage his grandchildren to pursue education. He was a volunteer at North Iowa Community School where he read with students and at Waldorf University where he tutored students in many subjects. He loved hosting family gatherings at his home in northern Iowa and could be counted on to get donuts and pizza for everyone. He did woodworking in his shop where he frequently made furniture with the help of anyone who was around. John loved driving his Farmall B around the acreage and helping his son-in-law, Christian, farm.

John is survived by his wife, Shirley; his four daughters, Christy Ann Merfeld, Cedar Rapids, IA, Cindy Beth Miller (Christian), Buffalo Center, IA, Cheri Gaye Morrison, Ames, IA, and Coral Renee Jordan (Jerry), Bark River, MI; 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Laflen (Karen), Houston, TX and Jerry Laflen (Betty Jo), Moundville, MO; and one sister, Penny Beattie, Nevada, a sister-in-law, Vickie McCarter(Mike), Nevada and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Bess Sellens and Pauline Hines; three brothers-in-law, Paul Hines, Howard Sellens, and Michael Beattie; two sons-in-law, Jay Merfeld and Dan Morrison, and his mother and father- in- law, Firp and Willa Wolf.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at Milo Cemetery, Milo, MO. with Christian Miller officiating.
