Tragedy strikes when least expected

Things like this you remember vividly

Friday June 11th, 1982
. My friend Alan Nieder was famous for being an early riser; and me, more of a night owl. At any rate, he had a knack for stopping by early on a random morning just to find a noisy way to wake me up.

But this time was different. In the early hours of this overcast, rainy day he came barging in my room yelling some mumbo jumbo about a helicopter crash and I knew he was serious.

As we are driving along a few minutes later, he excitedly recounts "The boys, (his brothers Les and Wes) saw a helicopter go down, and it's right up CC on Morris's place". As the crow flies, the location he's describing is a mile from my house and we'd be there soon...

As we pulled up, burning helicopter wreckage become clearly visible and we knew that no one could have survived that.

Thanks to neighbor Donna White for providing these newspaper clippings dated June 17th, 1982 that jarred my memory -Doug Mager

Suspect Rams Deputy Vehicle in Cass County Pursuit

Cass Co – Around 12:30 am Friday deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office assisted officers with the Harrisonville Police Department involved in the pursuit of a 2005 Chevy truck on northbound I-49 north of Harrisonville.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Apprehension Unit Deputy responded to the area with a patrol vehicle equipped with a Grappler device. Approximately one mile south of Peculiar, the deputy was able to stop the vehicle. The driver of the truck got out of the vehicle at which time a passenger attempted to drive away.

The truck was still attached to the Grappler device preventing it from leaving. The subject then put the truck in reverse and struck the patrol car with a deputy in the vehicle, causing both vehicles to be disabled.

Deputies and Officers on the scene took two subjects into custody. A passenger was questioned and released at the scene.

The driver of the truck, Jeramy T. Box, 44, Kansas City was arrested on multiple Kansas City warrants and is being held pending charges related to this incident.

Bailey K. Allen, 23, Harrisonville was arrested on an active warrant for Second Degree Burglary in Jackson County, bond $5500.00. Allen is also being held pending charges related to ramming the Cass County patrol vehicle.

“The ability to deploy the proper staff, tools, and training to apprehend criminals is essential to our mission to keep Cass County safe. In this case the suspect acted with wanton disregard towards the public and deputies safety,” said Sheriff Jeff Weber.

Butler Bears Wrestling News 12/4/20

The Butler High School boys and girls competed and represented their town and school well last night in a triangular dual with Oak Grove and Holden. We ended up splitting the duals 1-1 but not without some drama.

We wrestled Oak Grove to a 42-42 tie and it came down to the tenth tie breaking criteria to give Oak Grove the edge. Oak Grove beat us 60-6 last year, and are typically one of the top teams in Class 2.

Considerable improvement has been made over the past year and first few weeks of the season. The wrestling team followed up with a 33-21 win over Holden with some of our wrestlers stepping up and wrestling a higher weight class to secure the win.

Incredibly proud of the effort and excitement of the boys and girls. While there is a lot of opportunities for improvement this was a great stepping off point for the season. Here are the following results:

Baylor Myers- 1-1 (Wrestled hard)
Ryan Baker- 2-0 (Bumped up to 126 to beat a returning state placer against Holden)
Josh Smith- 1-1 (Great effort)
Brendin Patrick- 2-0 (Picked up right where he left off last year)
Ostin VanVoorst- 2-0 (Business like attitude on the mat tonight)
Gavin Burgess- 1-1 (Solid performance by Gavin)
Tristan Trumbore- 2-0 (This kid doesn’t quit)
Issac Rodriguez- 2-0 (Bumped up to 220 to secure a win for the BHS wrestling team)
Zayne Nuzum - 0-2 (Wrestled hard for young wrestler)
Makayla Reanne Mallat- 1-0
Josie Johnston - 0-1 (Tough first match)

The boys and I couldn’t do this without Jeff Taylor, Andrew Dixon, and Rick White. Thanks for all of your effort in making this thing go.

We look forward to the opportunity ahead of us at the Ray Stockdale Tournament at Knob Knoster this weekend.

From the desk of Bates County Coroner Greg Mullinax

On Thursday, December 3, 2020 just before 9am I was called to a residence in Rich Hill where a person had died in their home.

While in progress on this call I was advised of a death at the Bates County Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. Upon clearing from Rich Hill, I continued to the ER and began that case.

Both deaths are natural in origin and are are not related; one will be Covid-related.

Thoughts and prayers to the family members and friends grieving a loss.

Greg D. Mullinax
